Table Seating (open to all!)
Guiding Ginnie to the table, Alec selected a spot where her clothing would be most easily facilitated on the side facing the door. Moving a neighboring chair against a wall, he pulled out another chair for her to be seated in with enough space around her as to not disturb neighboring occupants (and be able to get up quickly if necessary).
A chair for you, Mademoiselle.
Taking the seat to her right, Alec looked up to the door in time to see Nova enter in her vintage Nirvana look and...someone...next to her.
Well, there's Nova...and...oh...my...god...is that Jan?
Keeping what could have easily been a bout of uproarious laughter down to a choking chuckle, Alec struggled to get his ageism in check.
I suppose some of us are luckier than others concerning the traditional clothing of our time. It is a good thing he's got nice legs or there'd be trouble.
Feeling immensely better about his youth, Alec reached for the bottle center table.
Wine for you?
((OOC: I will have sporadic access until Tuesday morning - please jump in and help entertain! I'll pop in and be sarcastic or socially clumsy as frequently as possible! Cheers, and Happy Halloween! Permission to staff to move me as necessary.))
"I work in Research and Development at Duibne Industries."
Which she knew could mean she made up new products, to tested medicines, to doing what she actually did. She knew how much she could reveal to the general public, and she knew that not all innocent ears were as beguiling as they looked.
"Yes, I'm sure it does take time re-establishing yourself in a new city. I guess I'm lucky I bring my job with me wherever I go."
She smiled, and then caught something Ginnie said.
"Another Duibne employee? They must have a large presence here in Nachton...and seem to be quite diverse. Have you already put in your 'hellos' with the big wigs tonight?"
Shay nodded her head towards where Mathias appeared to be still enthralled in conversation.
"Meridian, and Duibne...two companies I now know of in Nachton.
Alec...being in security, have you spoken to Arin Bjorn, of Meridian Apex Industries? His firm deals in antiquities, and I would certainly think they would have need of a security firm. Though, I'm being silly...I'm sure you've investigated all the possibilities so far yourself."
The city of Nachton wasn't all that big, but on the off chance he'd not heard of them, Shay didn't think it was wrong to offer what information she had.
I did have a few leads, but I hadn't yet contacted Meridian. Folks dealing in antiquities frequently use multiple layers of both security and employ several analysts. That could turn out to be a fruitful lead...thanks for the name.
From what I can tell, Duibne is a very good firm to work for. Excellent benefits and job security...if you can land it. Maybe I'll check in there, too.
See what a little conversation over wine can do? Cheers!
"You're very welcome, I wish you well in your endeavor.
I would have to agree about Duibne as well...with both Mathias, and Ginnie working there. I don't see either of them sticking with a place that didn't fulfill their needs and desires."
She grinned and toasted along, but after taking a sip of her wine, she glanced back to where Mathias still stood, and yearned for his return.
So, if you don't mind me prying, what kept you in California for so long?
Finishing his soup, Alec looked around. The next course should be coming soon - hopefully that would serve as a solid distraction to buy Mathias more time. He hoped that whatever information was being exchanged was important.
So, if you don't mind me prying, what kept you in California for so long?
"Indeed, twenty-seven years in one place is a long time."
"So, if you don't mind me prying, what kept you in California for so long?
"Being born there, I guess, for one thing. My family is there. Then college...the L.A.P.D. Before I knew it twenty seven years passed. Though I have traveled the states some, this is my first time living away from home, so to speak."
Surprisingly, she found she didn't miss it anywhere near as much as she had thought she would. However, she had someone now...and she knew that helped distract her from being homesick.
"But you two? Alec, where did you call home before Nachton...and Ginnie, you weren't born here either."
This was the most information Shay had garnered out of anyone she'd met so far...and she was enjoying the exchange between the three of them.
Ginnie chuckled. She did actually have those damned things, she just couldn't make herself throw them out. Not that she would, if anything she would burn them in a ceremonial fire, but what good would that do her? She loved the musty old things. They were some of the few things she had managed to hand onto in the two hundred and some odd years since her husband was murdered. She turned her attention briefly to the waiter offering the main course. She selected the chicken as she did not think steak would sit well for dancing later.
I'm up from New Orleans, fairly recently. Everything before that is a blur, really.
Smiling a bit at the overwhelming truth he'd uttered that would likely go unnoticed, he turned to Ginnie.
Heh...that'd be something to see you in your clan colors. Why didn't you break them out for tonight?
"Mostly it is because I have an objection to being naked in public."
[i]She chuckled a bit to keep from falling off her chair in laughter. She had thought to wear it, but it clashed with her dress, and she didn't have much to do with her heritage beyond her accent anyway.
"I jest. It clashed with my lovely gown and that just would not due."
And Shay really did believe Ginnie's gown was one of the best costumes she'd seen. Though no matter how envious she might be, she was still a bigger fan of comfort, and was glad she chose what she had.
She turned to Alec with sympathy on her face.
"I hope you did not lose much in the recent natural carnage sustained in the bayou...how sad for all those people to lose loved ones, and homes...there again I guess is an example of why earthquakes scare me less. Even in the largest ones we've sustained over recent years...the loss of life and property damage can't compare."
She again glanced over at Mathias, and hoped he was scoring big points with his employer. She doubted he'd still be there unless he found it necessary, but she was starting to feel a bit abandoned...moreover, she just missed him.
Sighing, she looked down at the chicken dish set before her, and cut a small bite. Savoring the flavor, she smiled up at Ginnie and Alec, before commenting.
"The food here is very good."
And as she looked out among the crowd, she saw Paul! Someone she knew...finally. She held onto propriety though, and didn't stand up and whistle his way...she even had the control not to wave. She did grin to herself though, when she realized had she been home, amongst her cop friends at a similar event, she wouldn't have hesitated. A change had come over her here, in Nachton...and she realized it was about time.
With luck, she'd have a chance to say hi to Paul, later.
Winking at Alec and Ginnie,he snuck up behind a distracted Shay.
Nuzzling her neck he whispered "What sort of fool leaves the most beautiful woman in the room all alone? I say we leave everyone here and I will show you how a lady should be treated"
Sitting down next to Shay he apologized to the table. " Sorry, sometimes business takes longer to conclude than one wishes. How's the food? "
The exclamation slipped out before she realized it, but recovered quickly as her hand went up to caress his cheek. She blushed more at her reaction than his words, and after darting a look at the Ginnie and Alex, Shay's eyes were only for Mathias.
"Food? OH! The food...is very good."
'Good Shay...brain activity returning yet?' She thought, as she had momentarily lost track of everything but him. Her hand went to his thigh, and with a soft squeeze she hoped she let him know she wasn't at all upset...but glad to have him beside her again.
"You seem to work with quite a variety of people." She giggled. She'd noticed there seemed to be a queen bee, who everyone looked to defer to...but it was the arrival of the geisha that seemed to have everyone buzzing now. Shay had admired the costume, but didn't think it was really anymore spectacular than some of the others she'd seen.
"Alec, Ginnie, and I have been talking about where we came from...before Nachton."
And with that little bit of conversation, Shay again realized how many things she didn't know about Mathias. Though it really wasn't a request for him to go into detail now...she really was just bringing him up to speed.
"My parents worked for the Russian State Department,so we moved around a lot. It rather destroyed my accent and when they died I sort of bounced around various agencies." Growing up in the court of Constantinople was an experience to be sure. People of all colors and creeds came to the City. all were welcome and none turned away. Which,of course, explained why the crusaders sacked it. Can't have tolerance and understanding - no room in the church for that! It was a grudge he carried to this night.
"Welcome back, Mathias. Meet anyone interesting?"
Taking Shay's hand in his Mathias' snagged down a passing waiter " I'll have the steak please, medium rare." He turned to Alec and Ginnie and took a sip of his drink.
"Since I came late to the conversation, please excuse my ignorance, but where did you both reside pre Nachton?"
Ginnie gave Mathias a mischievous grin and pulled a bite of chicken from her fork. That should cure her penchant for the sarcastic side of things for a bit, and she could pretend to be a normal person for a little while longer. She also hoped someone would ask just what she researched.
He remembered his visits to the Highlands, a proud warrior folk. " Where in the highlands Ginnie? I have visited Wick and Helmsdale a couple of times, looking into Pict religious practices. "
"Louisiana eh? Unfortunately my experiences there are limited to New Orleans." Work had brought him there,a contract to assassinate a drug kingpin. Mathias always took the contracts placed by fellow criminals,it allowed him a sense of honor.
She also was intrigued by Duibne, and wondered what it was they did there. Mathias researched religious sects...Ginnie researched something...or developed something...yet Shay didn't associate Duibne with anything she could think of. Most large corporations, even those as diverse as Duibne appeared to be, were still known for somethings publicly. Yet she'd never heard of the company prior to coming to Nachton.
And all the traveling...Shay was way behind the group on that score. Scottish highlands...what a romantic thought...to be out walking among them, with her lover's hand in hers.
She shook the thoughts away for now...ideas for her book were constantly pushing into her consciousness, but she had to fight to hold them at bay. Otherwise she'd find herself never leaving her fantasy world. And at the moment, her real world was so very much more enjoyable.
"I am in the middle of finding a different way to make bullets. I'm a munitions developer. Mostly though I like to make things go boom."
'See you can not sound like a lunatic when talking about your work, though if he asks I will be forced to go into elaborate detail. It can't be helped.' She laughed at her inner monologue, covering it with a small cough.
