Along the beach(Private)

Alfarinn made his way along the beach towards Kem's home wondering with some apprehension what kind of state he was likely to find the Egyptian. Aishe came all this way in order to become a vampire which suggested that the bond between them was something serious and real. Quite real if he had to guess.

Then there was the message about Nicholae and he had to wonder what that was all about and how Kem became involved. Looking up he was rather surprised to see the tall form of his clan mate huddled alone out on the beach. It had to be around 20 degrees outside and while that didn't bother Alfarinn much, he'd have thought the desert born vampire would have considered the air 'a bit nippy' at the very least.

Walking up to stand quietly beside him, Alfarinn looked out at the ocean and said.

"Any particular reason you're freezing your ass off on that cold sand? I could hazard a guess or you could save me the trouble and just tell me."

[All right, thanks for the info. And stay off this line in case I need to get back in touch with you later (Hah, hah).]

Kem looked at Alfarinn dubiously, relaying the conversation to him with an uncertain expression. This was right about the time where he was thankful he was neither Clan Leader nor Elder. He didn't envy Alfarinn having to come up with a solution; then again, he'd been entirely serious when he'd offered to do whatever he could to help. Tonight's events notwithstanding, he'd have done just about anything Alfarinn asked him to anyhow.

And that said, he still couldn't come up with anything based on the information he'd gotten from Nic.

Hmph. There was nothing easy about this whole thing. Maybe the beehive wig was an option, after all.

No. Definitely not.

[No, thank you Kem.]

Though Nic was more confused now than before, and really didn't understand what all the talk about his career was about. For now, he was staying in Kem's hands, but wondering when or if Arin would ever become involved.

He picked up his book again, and tried to get back into it. He was still curious to see just how far this Anita Blake would take her attraction to Jean Claude...

Alfarinn looked dubiously at Kem and slowly breathed out a sigh.

"Acting - is-, by definition, a very showy profession. I don't think it would be conducive to keeping him under wraps. A hotel would not be very safe for the moment either; though what he wishes to purchase once this has passed is certainly his own business. "

Taking another good swallow of his drink, he leaned back to continue thinking on the problem. Nic would need to stay in the towers and though he did not have to work while he was there, it would certainly do something towards him being useful to the company and clan, which did not even begin to make up for the trouble Ellis was likely to cause, but it was a start.

He looked over and Kem and smiled benignly, speaking in an off hand manner.

"You've met him and he trusts you. I seem to recall you work in the lowest level of the Towers, in fact they are actually underground. I think perhaps that would be an excellent place to hide our new clan member and perhaps he can be of some help to you with the books. "

Deciding he liked this arrangement, Alfarinn leaned back and closed his eyes, pleased with the solution. Kem would not be alone to think up any more dying schemes and Nic would be safely tucked away in the lowest parts of Meridian. Ellis would have to do some serious digging, perhaps even physically, to find him.

Alfarinn's benign smile immediately made Kem narrow his eyes. He had a feeling this wasn't going to be as easy as handing the newcomer off to Alfarinn and going along his way. Sure enough, what came next caused him to rear his head back slightly, silver eyes trying very hard to penetrate Alfarinn's satisfied air.

"Are you asking me to spend more time in the archives? Did you scare off another archivist recently?"

Kem had been working on his own for quite some time now, and had mostly been doing freelance work for Meridian - officially anyway. That said, he'd spent his fair share of time curating and archiving the records and items that came and went. He wasn't opposed to doing so again, in a more permanent capacity. Or insofar as 'permanent' went with him these days.

He could certainly show Nic the ropes there; if the endless paperwork didn't drive the man crazy after a day, he'd learn a lot about the organization needed to run his own hotel.

Alfarinn smiled sweetly at Kem.

"No, I didn't but one of them is out on maternity leave. I did promise to find her some temporary help if she promised to name the baby Alfarinn."

He grinned at the possibility. He had indeed suggested the baby be named for him in exchange for finding someone to work while the head archivist was out on maternity leave. There was a post for the temporary job placement in the internal news letters; he could have this taken down if Kem and Nic were going to work there.

"Might want to let the lucky new employee know about his job placement and tell him that we are aware of his situation and that I will do my best to work it out with Ellis in such a way that it does not involve him being skinned alive."

Getting up, he finished the last of his drink and headed to the kitchen to place the glass in the sink.

"You, please eat something. This girl might be worth dieing for but I doubt she'd appreciate you starving to death. Nor does it make for a good story. Permanent solution to a temporary problem and all that."

He smiled at Kem and took the bottle away from his friend as well. Setting this on a shelf in the refrigerator, he said.

"It will be dawn soon. I need to get back to home, unless you want me to stay with you."

Kem shook his head. "I hope she didn't fall for it," he said, referring to the poor archivist. "Who would name their kid Alfarinn anyhow? What would they call him? Alfie?" He eyed Alfarinn speculatively, then shook his head again. "No, it's just inhumane."

I'll mention it to Nic. Hopefully he'll be interested. If not I'll see if I can come up with anything else. Regardless, I can fill in if you want. And I'm sure Nic will be gratified to know that the wolves are to be held at bay, however temporarily it may be."

Kem gave Alfarinn a fairly hollow smile at the admonishment that followed. He deserved it, and if that was all that came of this night he'd count himself lucky.

"You're welcome to stay if you'd like, but I promise I won't do anything stupid for at least the next few weeks."

He quailed as he said it for he didn't make any kind of promise lightly, but once past his lips he was pretty much resigned. Besides, tomorrow would be a whole new night and perhaps he could work himself into some kind of reasonable compromise between the irritating highs and lows of the last few weeks. Being in the archives would probably help; the atmosphere was one he had always enjoyed. Yet another one he owed his clan leader. Damn the man's foresight.

Alfarinn glared at Kem in mock threat.

"Alfarinn is a wonderful Norse name, it has character and heritage. It could be worse. She could decide to give the poor kid a girl's name like Sandy or Jessie or...Kim."

He smirked at Kem and shrugged.

"He can help or not help but it would be wise for him to appear grateful and do what he can."

No more on the subject really needed to be said to Kem who had always been useful and supportive of the clan but the messages he relayed back made him wonder if Nic was interested in helping out his vampiric family or was one of those who called themselves Evenhet in name only for protection but had nothing to do with the clan. Such people did not bother Alfarinn; they had their place but they also generally asked for very little from their clan.

He looked at Kem and smiled at the promise that he would not do something stupid, knowing the Egyptian was a man of his word.

"Good, then I will be on my way. I will see you soon and you can tell me how everything went."

Everything being, talking to Nic, looking into the archives and talking to Aishe, which Kem would eventually have to do.

Kem gave a dry laugh at Alfarinn's comeback, resigned to losing that round. "I prefer Kemberly, thank you very much," he retorted, rising to his feet.

Kem agreed with a nod at Alfarinn's mention of Nic... Kem himself would have done whatever was necessary, but Kem most likely wouldn't have gotten himself into that sort of situation to begin with, so it wasn't his place to judge. He would make the offer, however, and hopefully Nic would be receptive. Just because kem didn't much care what happened to himself half the time didn't mean he believed everyone felt the same.

Walking Alfarinn out, he briefly wondered if 'everything' translated as 'dragging your miserable ass to the towers every morning while you try to avoid your would-be human lover and remember exactly why living is worthwhile,' but then he remembered that he was supposed to be moving away from thoughts like that.

By the time he came to his senses, Alfarinn had gone. But it was no difficult task to reach out with his mind for a second time that night, to someone far easier to contact due to centuries of association, and say the words that had sounded far too trite before.

[U ru ese, Alfarinn... ankh udja seneb.]

The answering [Peri em hotep] left him with a feeling of... he couldn't say peace. But - stillness, which was a welcome change.

Dawn was coming soon. Kem decided that he'd had enough of deep thought for one night. He would get in touch with Nic again at the earliest opportunity tomorrow, and hopefully they would be able to make an appearance at Meridian soon.

With that thought in mind, Kem cleaned up the leftover glasses, folded the afghan back over the recliner, and hauled himself into his bedroom for what would hopefully be a dreamless day.
