Wren woke up with a cold sweat covering her chilled body and her breath coming in short gasps. She'd had The Nightmare again. She was so fucking tired of waking up scared. Sighing she crawled out of the bed and got into the the shower letting the water warm as she stood in it. She had forgotten to grab her toiletries so just used what the hotel had provided, bitching to the soap about how much lotion she was going to need. She should shave her legs, but giving them a feel she decided they could just be waxed along with her bikini area.
She stepped out of the shower and used three of their dinky towels to dry off and went back into the room. Kneeling on the floor she opened on of her cases and pulled out panties and a bra, both blue gingham with little white eyelet lace trim and little white bows, and a black belt with a rectangle button covered in pink crystals. She knee walked to her other case and pulled out a pair of faded low rise blue jeans and a pink body hugging cashmere sweater, and a pair of trouser socks.
She stood and threw the lot onto the bed. She put lotion from her toiletry bag on as much of her as she could reach, then dressed, putting on the same black boots as yesterday. She ran a brush through her hair to tame it.
She picked up her jeans from that morning and pulled everything out of the pockets. She took the wad of cash from Drev and sat on the bed to count it. 'Fifty, one hundred, one fifty, two, two fifty, three, twenty, forty, sixty, eighty, four, twenty, forty, fifty, five hundred, ten, fifteen, twenty, one, two, three.'
"Holy fucking shit."
She stared at the stack of bills a bit dumb founded. It's not like she'd never had that much, she had two grand in the lining of her suitcase, and she could earn more than that on a good night, it was just the thought of some stranger giving her that much, just because he wanted to pay for her shoes.
She gathered up the bills and tucked them into the wallet in her purse along with the hundred in assorted bills of her own. She added lip balm to the near empty space and decided it was time to spend Drev's money.
She grabbed coat, hat, scarf and glove, checking to make sure her keycard was in the pocket she'd stuffed it in while cleaning out her other jeans, and left for the mall.
It took her a little while to find the mall, but she didn't mind all that much, it gave her a chance to see what else The Strip offered. Once inside she found the little mall map thing and stood staring at it, getting a feel for the stores the placed offered. She was even excited to find a day spa in the court outside one of the department stores.
Again, Shay had been lucky in that department. She never had been so badly hurt by a guy that she had to withdraw like that. She doubted she had ever loved anyone like she loved Alexi. Not being that involved was surely the reason prior break ups went so well.
Now, finding her entire being wrapped up with this other person, it was more than evident she could be hurt beyond bad, should anything happen.
Whatever the circumstances, Shay had to respect Wren's reasons, and not intrude there.
She wondered if Wren was a virgin, and that was another reason why she kept her distance. That would not be a question she would pose to the girl, as it was most assuredly none of her business.
"Hmmm...I don't know. Those hands can be an awful lot of fun though."
She winked, and took a good gulp of her margarita.
"God that's good."
Shay toyed with the stem on her glass, and then looked up at Wren.
"What about as friends...do you do the guy friend thing?"
That was something Shay was always at ease with, and had a ton of male friends to show for it. Once she got beyond her initial shyness, which really was only in large crowds anyway, she did very well with men. It had helped her avoid a lot of hassles on the force too.
More than that, she just hated the thought of meeting someone and not making them into some kind of friend.
"Not usually. I've not found a guy who can just be my friend, well other than the gay guys at school. But they're just like girl friends so it doesn't really count. [/i]
She took a sip of her margarita as she remembered the last guy she'd befriended, that had ended when they were at the movies and he put his arm around and tried to grope her. Sadly he didn't even try to deny what he'd done or apologize. It had been rather a sad time in her life.
"No it seems they all have ulterior motives, it's all rather pathetic really. So I stick to women and the occasional gay dancer."
She grinned and the waiter came back to take their order. She decided on chicken fajitas with no bell peppers, bell peppers were just nasty.

And why, all of a sudden, did Shay feel the need to resolve this thing for her? Shay had compassion, but this was the first time she had found herself wanting to get so involved in someone else's problems. Could it be that she felt a little towards Wren, like she had her younger sister?
Thoughts interrupted, Shay again smiled at the waiter, and ordered two tacos carnitas, and spanish rice.
"That really is pathetic, and totally their loss for not seeing the opportunity to get to know you."
Snapping a chip in half, to dip one part in salsa and then into her mouth, Shay swallowed, sipped her drink, and repeated with the other half.
"Are you still living out of your suitcase, or did you find someplace permanent to live yet?"
A change of subject seemed best, for now.
"I know a little about some of the neighborhoods around. I found a darling condo, but I've also seen some really nice townhomes, and some huge apartments."
Maybe Wren was living at one of the clan domiciles...but then that would mean she was someone's familiar. And she hadn't talked about knowing anyone well enough for that. For some reason Shay was glad the vampire world probably hadn't touched Wren...yet anyway. With what Shay was going through herself, it was nice to have contact with at least one nice human. Or one she knew for pretty certain, was human.
"Nope still a suitcase for me. This is really only my first full day here. I got in yesterday about six or so, and then just explored the Strip until I stopped for coffee and food, then met Drev. So I haven't even looked. I was going to look today, but shopping is way more fun."
She took a bite from the chip in her hand and smiled. This was really nice and if Shay knew of a place that was renting with immediate move in, she would be really really ahead of the game
"I'm hoping to rent something with either two bedrooms or hardwood floors. Though I should probably get a job first since I doubt my stock portfolio is enough to guarantee payment."
Shay picked up the unlit candle that was sitting off to the side of the table, and held it up a bit.
"And the award for fastest mover of 2005, goes to Wren!"
And then presented the candle to her new friend.
"I thought I was good, but honey you've got me beat by a mile."
Shay laughed, and leaned back a bit in her chair, before sipping her margarita again. She then held it up, much in the same way she had the candle.
"And here's to finding a job, and a place just as quickly!"
Taking another sip, she leaned back to the table, and folded her arms along the edge.
"I'm not sure if any of the condos where I live are for rent, and I'm not sure if the apartments I visited recently have vacancies, but I think they both have hardwood floors...well mine does anyway. I'll give you what information I have on them, along with my phone number and address, so you can reach me if you need to. Plus, when you do get settled you can call and let me know. I'd really like to have you over for drinks some night, and to meet Mathias."
It was so nice acting like a normal woman again, Shay just beamed.
"I do try, but this is a record even for me."
She picked up her own glass and lifted it in toast. "Thanks!"
She took a bite of chips and salsa as Shay spoke. "I'd like that. I'll have to get a cell phone today. I had to leave mine back home and cancel the service." She rolled her eyes, but inside she shivered at the sound of the voice on the other end of that sleek little phone. She'd have to be careful and not get one like it, so that she wouldn't be afraid to hear it ring.
Their food arrived sizzling hot and was set before them. Wren took a deep breath and sighed. She absolutely loved fajitas and these smelled like they had a little bit of lime action going on. They promised to be very good.
"I'm going to have some spa treatments done later today. Want to come along? I'm sure they can do your nails when they do mine and that sort of thing."
That could be fun id Shay wanted to go. It would also be fun on her own, but she mostly just wanted to get to know her new friend more.
And with the seemingly volatile lifestyle she had just committed herself to, Shay refused to think that something might happen to Alexi, and no one would be able to reach her. Although further thought on that, and she wondered if anyone would bother to notify a mere 'familiar' if something were to happen to their 'master'.
When the waiter had left the table, Shay immediately picked up a taco, and bit into the crunchy goodness. She looked up at Wren with a slightly apologetic look, and gave a tiny moan.
"I never realize how hungry I really am, until I'm eating. These are wonderful...I'm going to need to find out if Mathias likes Mexican food, and then bring him here anyway."
She laughed, and proceeded to take another bite.
The idea of having a 'pampering' day sounded heavenly, but she also wanted to be home when Alexi awoke. What with the trip to New York, she felt like she hadn't really spent much time with him. Of course that wasn't true at all, since the only time she had been away was during the day, when he was sleeping anyway.
But thoughts of walking into his arms after being 'polished up', sounded pretty good too. God knew a massage would be welcomed.
"A spa? I didn't know they had one here, but what a marvelous idea. I wonder if they would have any openings for drop ins though...?"
Shay pondered the idea for a scant few seconds before nodding.
"Well, since you don't mind the company, I'll at least check it out. If they don't have any openings, I won't be any worse off than I am now.
I still say...new shoes...new dress...spa treatments...for someone who has such a cavalier attitude towards your date, you sure go all out. I can't wait to see how you are when you're REALLY interested!"
Shay winked, and finished her first taco. God but she was devouring the food!
"Mostly I do the same stuff. I haven't had a wax in just a little too long and a girl doesn't go out dancing when she's got gorilla hair, now does she? And new shoes means a pedicure, and you can't get a pedicure with out a manicure, nails must match. Then of course if you're already there for a wax and mani/pedi then you might as well get a facial, right?"
She chuckled and finished off her first fajita, and started to make a second. She glanced at her watch. They could stop and add Shay to Wren's treatments, then she could go buy a phone while they waited for the appointment time to roll around. She decided to add a massage to all of that as well.
"So what do you do for work? I know you said you write, but what do you write?"
"Ok! Ok..you win. This is just a normal day and night in the life of Wren."
Shay laughed, to show she had been teasing pretty much, anyway.
"So far I've written two novels, and am in the midst of a third...all fiction...extreme fiction!" She snickered. She had to keep up appearances when it came to her current book.
"I was a cop right out of school, and the first two books dealt with that...young woman on the LAPD, out to rid the world of evil...you know."
And she continued to speak of her writing in a jovial light, though none of her books were comedic. Shay learned early on that one should never take their livelihood too seriously, or they wound up with ulcers, and died of a heart attacks.
She polished of the second tortilla and went to picking chicken out of the onions to eat. She'd had enough bread for the day, thanks.
"Unless you'd rather I didn't so as not to ruin our friendship before it's started, by not liking them."
She grinned at Shay and drank the last of her margarita, and taking a sip of her water.
"The first one was "Life Changes", and I actually began writing that one before I left the force. The fact that it was received so well, was behind my decision to leave my career as a peace officer. Well that and my dissatisfaction with the legal system."
There was much more that went into her decision, but those two things were the easiest to explain, and really did have the greatest bearing.
"The second one only came out two weeks ago..."Badge on the Beach"...it has the same female lead...or heroine, if you will. So far it seems to be on its way up quickly too."
Yes, she was proud of her work and had no compunction in showing it.
"The third one remains officially untitled, and is a complete departure from the first two. I'm calling it "Blood on the Moon", and instead of police, it deals with vampires."
When she spoke the last word, she took a bite of her rice, and watched Wren's face for any flicker of emotion.
She pushed her plate away and leaned back stretching her full tummy. The margarita had given her a soft pleasant buzz and she was very content to just sit for a moment.
"I'm definitely going to read that when it comes out."
Relieved to think that maybe Wren could help Shay remain grounded in normalcy, if their friendship were able to grow. Worried to think Wren was more vulnerable, not knowing. And curious to know just how long it would be, before Wren found out.
"They are quite fascinating...I've always been enamoured of them, for as far back as I can remember. For one thing, I always thought they were one of the easiest 'monsters' to protect yourself from."
So there were two counts she was wrong on, she had been a mere child when she fantasized as such. To find they were not monsters, with the possible exception of Ellis, had been nice. To find she had no protection over one in particular, had been better than nice, but only after she knew he loved her as much as she did him.
"Maybe my book will generate enough doubt in your mind...that is the intent, anyway. I guess like an actress...we both put out something we hope you'll believe, and be entertained by. Speaking of which, while I liked Underworld, all the fighting left me a little cold. I guess I rather like the romantic vampires more...the ones who make you all tingly, when you look into their eyes, and understand how easily you can succumb to their will."
Thinking she must now have a totally school girl dreamy look on her face, she blinked, and shook the notions from her head. Her second taco now gone, Shay drained the last of her margarita, and mimicked Wren's position.
"Now that feels good. I can't remember the last meal I actually finished! And if you're serious, I'll make sure you get one of the first bound editions, right off the presses."
Lucile always made sure Shay got about fifty copies of the first printing, so she could make sure her family and friends got one. It was good marketing practice, Lucile had stated.
"I hate to eat and rush, but we might want to make our way to the spa if I want to have any chance of getting in...then we can get you your phone?"
She shrugged and smiled at Shay. She didn't need to believe in boogey men and things that went bump in the night. She'd lived it.
"Sounds good. I was thinking that same thing." Wren pushed from the table, with a soft moan.
"I'm gunna hit the ladies room first." She got up and headed to the back of the place, the margarita had gone right through her.
Shay winked. Nope...the garlic, the holy water...wouldn't do Wren any good at all.
She remained where she was as Wren went to the bathroom, but gathered her things into her lap.
"Okay, I'll wait for you here."
And then proceeded to apply a quick layer of gloss onto her lips.
It was probably just that she had been so nice and they had a lot in common and Wren had been in need of a friend in this new strange place, especially under the circumstances that brought her here. Speaking of those, she might ask Shay about it, since she'd been a cop. No that was stupid she stopped being a cop for a reason and didn't want some strangers stalker woes thrown at her.
She cleared her head with a shake and put a smile on her face, before heading back out to the table. She picked up her stuff and smiled at Shay.
"All ready? Gosh I don't think this stuff was this heavy before lunch."
"I think that has to do with your blood sugar. After eating it's higher, and can make you feel a bit lethargic...so any exercise might feel strenuous."
Odd that she would think of that now. Her sister Cindy was diabetic, and Shay had picked up a little knowledge of such things through her.
"Random thoughts...I'm great with them."
She smiled, wrinkled her nose and shrugged. It was just her tendency to say what was on her mind when it was on her mind. Unless she thought it was TOO inappropriate.
"So tell me...did you leave behind a large family back home? I was just reminded of my little sister...I've got two younger brothers as well, though they're all married. I've become the topic of dissection when I call, and I'm sure it will be the same when I visit...'Why isn't our Shay married, and settled?'"
Shay gave a soft snort, though it really didn't bother her.
"Just my parents and two older brothers. I've been away from them a long time, I don't miss them much anymore. Just on Christmas and the occasional Sunday morning when I'm wishing for waffles and sausage."
'See that wasn't so hard. You can probably even elaborate and not explode.'
"My brothers are both married and my mom's given up hope on me ever giving her a wedding to plan. Which is just as well, because if I ever did get married I'd probably elope in Vegas and avoid all that crap."
They headed down the mall toward the spa. Wren could talk about her family in bursts and while the fear of her brothers made her heart cold, Shay seemed to make it easier. 'That is just strange, strange I tell you.' Her inner voice was getting work out today.
And thoughts of weddings, and babies, again tugged at Shay's heart. Somethings were just never meant to be. No marriage for her and Alexi, and no babies for them either...she sighed, before she could put her guard back up. She would have liked talking to Wren about her current problem, and had she known her longer she might have. But Wren didn't seem to be any more interesting in babies and motherhood, than Shay thought Alexi would be. So she just maintained her silence on that topic.
It didn't stop her from having opinions on things though.
"Eloping? I agree with you on that, with the exception being that I would still like it being a more formal affair than Las Vegas could provide. I just wouldn't want a couple hundred people there that I either didn't know, or didn't care about. But a few close friends, and him, and a dress...the rest of it...yes, I think I'd still want the trimmings."
