Trains of thought

The drive to the train station had been unremarkable, and quiet. Shay had let Tristan drive, mainly because she was too distracted to concentrate on the road. It wouldn't do to get injured on the way to the hospital, she thought glumly.

It wasn't just herself though, that had her mind elsewhere. She was still worried about her brother, and wanted to ask him just who in the hell he'd let bite his neck...and why, but couldn't. First off it was apparent he didn't know he'd been bit, which meant whoever bit him at least had the courtesy to disguise the act. But that led her to wonder if the vampire had been male or female. Needing to know this was very low on her list of priorities, but unless he had changed dramatically over the past few years, she already knew the answer. Tristan didn't do boys.

Where he had met his vampire was another concern, but again she just couldn't think of a way to find out anything, without giving him more information than would be good for him to have. At least for now, since he had nodded off almost the minute the train started up, she didn't need to worry about him. There was nothing she could do about it for a few days anyway.

Alexi, was pretty much in the same place, at least in her mind. Shay wanted to help him too, but knew there really wasn't anyway for her to do. Yet she had a lot more faith in Alexi and his ability to survive, than she had in Tristan. Alexi had already lived long enough to show he wasn't the type to live life rashly, take unnecessary chances, or show any evidence that he
wasn't a master at his craft. It didn't mean she could just not worry. Even if someone told her he was now physically immortal and there was nothing that could harm him, she would worry about his mental state...or his emotional well being...or something. It was just her nature, she supposed.

It was way too early to get up and drive anywhere, but Tristan didn't complain. Knowing Shay's state of mind it would have gotten him either, a- ignored, b- punched, or c- punched then ignored. He opted to go for the ignoring without adding anything more to her list of issues today.

Fortunately the house wasn't too far from the train station, and traffic was light in Nachton this early. He parked the car, got her small bag, and walked onto the train, following behind her.

"Hey, sis...want some coffee, cocoa, muffins?"

He asked as she settled into the seat, with her bag where he set it, at her feet.

When she refused, he sat down. Her natural morning quiet would give him all the excuse he'd need to go back to sleep.

"If you need anything before we get there, just give me a kick, kay? I'm gonna catcha few more while I can."

When she nodded, Tristan made himself cozy in the corner of the booth, and promptly fell asleep.

It was a good thing the train came to a rather abrupt stop at the station, otherwise Shay and Tristan might have slept all the way to Bangor.

As it was, she woke up, and smiled to see Tristan had even slept through the electronic voice announcing their arrival into Grand Central. She nudged him with her foot, and laughed to see him startle and jump up. Once she assured him she was fine, but that they had arrived, he took her case from her hands, and waited for her to depart. She did so, still smiling. For all his younger brother issues, he still was being so sweet and attentive to her.

"So, in a little over twelve hours we'll be right back here, and on our way home. Sorry I wasn't better company."

Surprised to feel his arms go around her shoulders, Shay returned the hug, and without another word, exited the car. The taxi ride to the hospital wouldn't take long, and pretty soon 'it' would all be over.
