Sushi for two!

Yuu was tired of the cold, so much so that she mourned her heeled sandals in her closet before she put on her buckled boots. Walking thru the parking lot down on the boardwalk, she listened to the clunking of said boots as she searched out the sushi bar that she was going to have lunch at.

Her lunch date today was Dani Martin. Best girlfriend from college, but more importantly, kindred snob. Well, Dani was much nicer than Yuu, but she was beautiful and had great potentially for snobbery, thus making her still a very good friend for Yuu.

Today Yuu chose worn jeans, huge cowboy belt buckle and a tight, red shirt with with the words 'I HEART MAFIA' in bold, black letters. Her black blazer was open and swaying in the coastal breeze.

'Where the fuck am I?'

Yuu did a 180, trying to locate the sushi bar, she flipped open her phone and pushed her sunglasses up into her bunned hair. After getting directions from the bar, she realized she still had quite a bit to walk and with a defeated sigh, she pulled her sunglasses back over her eyes and kept walking. Finally she reached a rather bland looking shack and laughed.

'Nice, nice. I'm eating in a wooden shack. This will be FUN!'

A white washed shack with a big red dot on the door was her sushi bar. There were japanese characters written on the wall and she recognized enough to realize that they just picked cool looking characters, because she was fairly certain they did not want the outside of their restaurant to say, 'EAT HAPPY DOG'.

Pushing through the doors, she was pleasantly surprised to find an amazingly decorated japanese sushi bar. Soft rice paper doors, colorful lanterns and geisha like women serving customers. One japanese woman approached Yuu and gave her a regal nod. Much like the rest of Nachton, nothing was as it seemed.

'Party for two, waiting on a Miss Dani Martin?'

The woman led Yuu to the back of the restaurant and she was surprised to see how large the building seemed compared to its shack like structure on the outside. She was escorted to a small room with one table, low to the ground and two flat pillows. With a deep bow, the japanese woman backed out respectfully.

Happily Yuu knelt down, sitting on the flat pillow and waited for her lunch partner.

Dani adjusted her coat as she got out of the limo and gave a quick check over in the window’s reflection before the driver pulled away, leaving her on the cobblestone walkway where the Marina began.

She was especially fond of the little hole in the wall she and Yuu would be enjoying this afternoon, thinking it was one of the better kept secrets in Nachton, with a pleasant atmosphere and excellent sushi. Back in their college days they had only to go across the bridge and enjoy some of the best sushi in the country, in her humble opinion, but this restaurant made a very good showing.

More important than the place, though, was the company; it had been ages since she had seen Yuu, though they managed okay contact, and she’d been thrilled when it turned out her good friend was coming to town. And working for the state! Dani thought Yuu could really do wonderful things in her position and was quite glad she had accepted the job.

Seeing the restaurant ahead, she picked up her pace, her sage ballet style flats clicking on the stones and loose linen slacks swishing as she moved. Her blouse, a slightly lighter shade of sage, was long enough to be belted, with a gentle scalloped neckline.

She walked into the restaurant and smiled at the hostess, who showed her to their table after taking her coat. It was so easy to switch gears here, and while her brain never totally left the city and work and the busy life waiting for her outside, this was a place where she could just enjoy herself for a while.

Grinning broadly, she settled down onto the cushion across from Yuu and set her purse down next to her.

“My god, you look fantastic! It’s been too long, did you find the place okay?”

Yuu crawled around the side of the desk and reached out, giving Dani a very big hug. It had been some time, but as always, it was as if she had just seen her yesterday.

'No I got lost, of course. Do you know what the letters outside say?' She snorted happily. 'This place is beautiful!'

Settling back onto her cushion, the geisha waitress returned with green tea and asked their delight.
''Um, water please and shrimp tempura sushi to start? Thank you.'

Yuu was so very happy to see Dani's face. Thoughtful blue eyes and cute dark brown hair. They were both petite but Yuu a little thicker in proportion. It amazed Yuu how much compassion such a small person could have. Dani helped her through rough times in college, with school work and men...mostly men. She was a shoulder to cry on and very much the encouraging kick ass defender. Yuu was glad to be in the same town again with her, she looked forward to many future good times.

Reaching up and touching the bun in her hair, she tucked some wisps of hair back behind her ears.
'So how are you? You look fab! Tell me everything!'

Dani grinned and returned the hug with a tight one of her own, glad to see how little had changed. She gave an open shrug at Yuu’s question, answering honestly enough.

“Well no, actually, though a few people have tried to convince me of one meaning or another. I realized after someone tried to tell me it meant ‘eat happy dog’ that they all thought I was gullible!”

Perhaps she was a little gullible at that, though she preferred to think she just had a certain amount of faith that people were generally truthful.

Yuu gave her order while Dani poured the tea and considered the options, finally opting for the California rolls. She grinned when her friend got to the good questions first, considering how to bring her up to date.

“Oh, I’m doing well; love my job and there are a lot of volunteer opportunities here to keep me busy too.” She lit up as she brought up her next piece of information. “Did I tell you I got a dog? I named him Fatty, he’s really cute.” Imagining Yuu might ask, Dani supplied the answer airily before the question was needed. “No boyfriend though…honestly I just don’t have the time.” She shrugged, indicating the singlehood didn’t bother her.

“And what about you, Miss DA?” She grinned, quite proud of her friend. “How are you settling in? Do you have a place yet?”

The waitress returned with their selections and Dani sipped her tea until the elaborately dressed woman went away again. She picked up her chopsticks and nodded in the direction of Yuu’s selection.

“Good choice, by the way. Oh, and…meet anyone –interesting-?”

Yuu giggled as Dani mentioned her fat dog. How adorable, she thought. 'I'd love to meet him sometime. I think I need a pet...men just aren't cutting it for me anymore. I need unconditional love...a pit bull maybe.'

The waitress brought their sushi and Yuu dug into hers. 'I think I'm going to live here.' The food was incredible and the tea was steaming hot. She was happy to find a place she could escape to when the trials and paperwork were suffocating her.

'Welp, I love my job but I haven't gotten around to doing much of it. I've been on leave because of my ribs.' Yuu recounted the story of the explosion and her injuries although she left out Tai. She wasn't sure why either, but when Dani asked, she sighed and ate another sushi roll.

'I did meet a man. Can't say for sure he's 'someone' or anything other than a friend and an incredible fuck.' Yuu's face clouded thinking of him. 'The problem is...I don't know what kind of man he really is.' She waved dismissively, annoyed with herself. 'I don't know...what about you? Anyone special? What are you doing out here anyway? Oh and speaking of a place, I'm still holed up at the Piazza. I've been trying to get a place downtown in those high rise condos owned by Meridian. They look marvelous.'

Dani grinned at the mention of Yuu’s dog of choice, nodding her head in agreement.

“That’s a good breed.”

She nudged a little wasabi onto her California roll and picked it up with her chopsticks, savoring the myriad of textures as Yuu professed her enjoyment for her job. She did, however, wonder, with a crinkle of her forehead, what had happened to Yuu’s ribs to keep her out of work.

Her eyes went wide as her friend explained that she had been at the Mayor’s ball that night, quite in the thick of things as a matter of fact.

“Oh my god! How perfectly awful!”

She had thought it oddly fortunate that, while the explosion had been horribly frightening, no one she knew had been seriously affected. Continuing to make the appropriate sympathetic noises while Yuu gave her recounting, the mental images of the chaos following the explosion filtered through her mind and she gave a delicate shiver before picking up another roll.

She raised both eyebrows a little when Yuu explained the ‘men’ situation, wondering where this ‘someone’ would lead. Frowning in concern at her friend’s uncertainty and apparent confusion, she wondered if this was the usual dating stuff or something more complicated. Maybe it was absurd to think Yuu had come across a vampire already but it was certainly possible and not all vampires were like her Evenhets. Of course, there was a whole world of ‘confusing’ out there when it came to guys – it didn’t mean anything more was going on. After all, a friendship with benefits situation could get complicated enough all on its own, in spite of the usual intention being to keep things simple and avoid the confines of romantic love.

Yeah, getting a dog really was the way to go.

She wasn’t sure how to answer the ‘anyone special’ question though…in spite of knowing what Yuu meant, she couldn’t help but feel she had an awful lot of special people in her life. Not wanting to confuse the matter, though, she waved one chopstick as she answered.

“Eh, does the job count as ‘someone special’? We’re talking marriage, it’s quite serious.” Grinning a little, she shook her head, explaining. “I’m working as the administrative assistant for the head of public relations at Meridian. If you’re interested I can put in a word on one of the condos, by the way, maybe get through some of the red tape on that.”

Yuu clapped her hands. 'Could you? I'm tired of living in a hotel, it gets old after a while. You can only order so much room service.'

Yuu tucked her legs under her from her indian style position and leaned forward with interest. 'Tell me about this Meridian. I keep hearing about it all over town. What kind of corporation is it? Anything like that medical facility Duibine Industries? Any info you can give would certainly help understand this city more.'

Nachton was as strange as it was large. The city seemed to be commanded by the looming presence of both companies. She noticed as much at the Mayor's ball, catering to all the city big wigs. Her boss, DA James Wetherby gave the impression of someone who worked from the shadows, rather from the secured position of his office. Nachton was more foreign to her than the complexities of Los Angeles...but she supposed that's why she took the promotion.

Dani gave a little wave of her hand and grinned at Yuu’s request.

“It’s really no trouble at all. I’ll make some calls, I think your best bet is the highrise on Pratt and fourteenth though. Coincidentally, though, it’s also the nicest.” She gave a healthy wink at this, thinking Yuu would like the apartments quite well.

At her friend’s next question she gave a slight tilt of her head and made a mental note that Yuu had mentioned Duibne. She was, however, more concerned with answering the question, a subject matter she enjoyed talking about, than firing off more of her own just yet.

“Actually Meridian started out in the antique and artifact industry and that’s still our primary focus. We’ve certainly expanded to other industries though – either financing them or buying up companies all together. And our line of work naturally transitions into other fields and builds connections on the foreign front.”

Taking a sip of tea, she added:

“So yes, we’re a fair bit different from Duibne.” She grinned and set her tea cup down. “You do realize…between politics,” She pointed her chopsticks at Yuu “…and business…” she turned her chopsticks back on herself “…we could start a fair bit of trouble in this town.”

She beamed at the idea of the two of them rabble rousing, just like in the old days at Berkeley, though she did wonder if they would still agree on causes and the like. With that thought came a highly enjoyable lunch rehashing aformentioned 'old times' amist sampling what the fine establishment had to serve, and the hour of friendly chatting was, in Dani's mind, over all too soon.
