The hunt (private)
Suki had on her 'assistant' clothes. A snappy suit in dark red with a dressy cami peaking out of the V in the coat. Her straight legged slacks kissed the tops of her three inch heels. Her bag was a Prada, containing her cell phone, notebook, dayplanner and camera.
The real estate woman in front of her needed fashion help and apparently classes in learning what the customer asks is usually what they want. Tapping her toe angrily, Suki wished she had braided her hair rather than sweeping it up in a classic twist.
"Maybe you did not hear me. My boss is looking to purchase a very large, wooded estate. Not something in the city. If you cannot help me, I can find someone who can."
The woman floundered miserably. Suki took pity on her and followed her to the next location, still deep in the city. While this had two acres and baby trees, it was simply not acceptable. With a tight unhappy smile she fired the agent. Who had given this women such good reviews? Climbing into her chaufered car provided by Cyrus, her cell phone snapped open quickly. Scanning the list of people she picked one and listened to the other end ring.
"Hi Meredith? This is Suki, we met at the martial arts studio last month, in that class. Yup, thats me! The one who kicked everyone's butt till the teacher put me down. hehe" pause for breath "I seem to recall you mentioned your son was in real estate. I am looking for an agent for my boss, he's making Nachton his home and wants a huge estate outside of town." pause listening to the excited woman. "Oh yes definately in at price range. He wants old woods and acrege, like 50."
The driver could almost hear the woman on the other end clearly excited about such a prospect landing in her son's lap. Suki simply smiled and listened to the proud woman talk of her son who owned an agency apparently. "That would be perfect Meredith, thanks for your help, I will be looking forward to his call."
With a snap, her phone closed ending the call. Proud of herself she directed the driver to her condo. Half way there her phone rang, name unknown. Answering it perkily, Suki was pleased to be speaking to Meredith's son, Richard. A brief conversation had her directing the driver to his office, so they could search the database for suitable sites.
Over lunch of pasta fagioli, green salad, garlic bread and veal parmigan they discussed requirements. Richard took copious notes and asked several pointed questions to clear up any possibility of error.
House was unimportant as long as it was livable until something could be built to spec. If there was a recently built house the number of rooms and bathrooms was noted.
Land needed old trees and heavily wooded area, preferably next too the nature preserve acrage. Water and mineral rights were a must as well as no public utilities or roads running through it. Private for the use of the one house only.
She found one lot that looked perfect, until the bottom of the description said SOLD. Frowning she pointed it out to Richard who had a perfectly reasonable explaination as to why they kept things like this in their database and how to tell which ones were sold at a glance. The lot number ending with an S meant sold.
Making an appointment to view the few locations that met her specifications the next day, Suki left with a smile. The office was bowled over in her wake as each agent rushed to provide anything they could for the young woman of obvious drive and success.
She tromped around the site in jeans and combat boots. Smiling widely at the house that would need repairs and small flowering garden. The woods covered most of the now one piece of land.
They may want to have a better house built rather than try to update the current abode on the property. The other strip had nothing on it but since it had the most acreage, Suki felt that buying both was a good deal.
Smiling up at Richard she asked sweetly if he knew anyone in construction.
There were woods directly on the other side of the large lawn past the garden. He thought that open area would be the perfect place for a new home. Something safe and secure for him and Fallon. When Suki reached him he was walking along the meadow.
"A new house here. Two stories down underground, two above. A pool, hot tub and sauna nestled next to the trees. I want at least two master suites down, as well as a full living area with whatever modern necessities you can think of. Upstairs needs to be a normal house. The lower entrance needs to be concealed but easily accessed. Try to find a clan construction company if possible."
Pacing out a very large area that took up most of the lawn as he nodded to himself. "I want it done as soon as possible. No trees are to be cut down though. Tell me about this house here."
Before construction happened on the new house they needed a few things done on this one even if it would be torn down after a year. The basement was perfect for the vampires to stay in durring the day. Solid as well as subteranian and aside from two thin windows, completely free from daylight. They needed to install a bathroom and cover the windows as well as make the concrete walls more inviting. Drywall, carpet and paint should make things homey. Suki jotted everything down on her leatherbound notebook.
Outside she carefully made her way to Cyrus. He looked pleased. As he spoke she wrote down his requests on a new page. She would have to find an architect as well as a contractor. Chewing on her lip thoughtfully she wondered how to get in touch with other clan familiars. Her master's question brought her back to the conversation at hand.
"The house is older, but in good condition for the most part. It needs some paint and a bit of fixing up on the outside and upper levels. There is a lower level basement that needs to be finished and a bathroom installed but once thats in, it will be perfect for a short term. I am sure once I find the right construction crew it will be ready to move into within a week of purchase."
Pulling out the offer paperwork she held it out to him to review. The dollar amount did not even make him blink before he signed it with her offered pen. His comment as they made their way back to the awaiting car was curt but sounded excited. "I want it done, no later then the end of next week." Suki smiled at him and nodded, promising to get it done.
Sitting down with Suki they worked on what exactly needed to change. The master suite would need shuttered windows that were only openable from the inside along with a solid wall rather than a large array of french doors. That too would need a security door along with the master foyer doors. Cyrus also wanted his basement, with a hidden room or three for vampire guests and a vault. A media room and game room were given for the ultimate reason of a basement and would take up half the space.
The sale went through flawlessly thanks to the realtor, lawyer and Suki working tirelessly. A crew would be coming to finish the basement and fix up the current house to their needs. Within a week Cyrus and Fallon could move in.
The new construction would begin by the time they were moved in but would probably take six months to a year to complete. At least Suki was sure they could finish in six months. Their woods were vast and connected to the preserve and Heolfor. A neighbor next to them supposedly kept horses, which would limit the leopard's wandering as he did not wish to have them spook and alarm the owner.
The walls and ceiling would be a pale slate blue while the carpet would be a beautiful blue gray plush pile. The plumbing for the bathroom had been accomplished and while not the most luxurious it still boasted a large tub and walk in shower, two sinks, vanity and seperate commode area. The tile was still being carried in from the truck outside. An all purpose white with a pale blue accent square occasionally. The tub was a whirlpool but not jacuzzi and the shower had only two heads, not multiple jets. Everything was bought off the shelves of the home and bath store for expediancies sake.
Outside workers scraped and sanded before layering on primer and exterior paint. The house would become a green, quite similar to the trees outside which had just started to bud. The roof would be receiving new shingles in a brown shade to match the shutters and trim pieces being painted the same shade.
Upstairs the kitchen had been swiftly work on and now sported new floor tile, appliances and a solid surface countertop. The cabinets were simply restained to match the new cream and bronze look. A new tub and shower unit had been installed in the bathroom upstairs since the old one was cracked in various places. Soon the house would be livable while construction started on the new house.
Inspectors were currently swarming the site to verify the location's adherance to code and whatever else they needed to do prior to digging up the large lawn and turning it into a luxury home. The style of home Cyrus had chosen was not quite perfect for this area, so Suki had made some minor adjustments in the construction materials. The outside would be a concrete made to look like stucco but smooth. The roof would be standard New England specification shingles instead of clay tiles. The enclosed pool and lani would sport thick walls and a heating system as well as an indoor ceiling shade that would be operated at the push of a button to cover the thick safety glass roof. The underground area would have a hidden forest exit for emergency use. The tunnel and rooms would be completed first by one construction company while at least two others would be used to finish the basement then house for securities sake. No company would be allowed to take pictures or keep blue prints even though half the features were not listed in any blue prints.
Smiling happily she checked things off in her notebook while bouncing lightly on the tips of her steel toed combat boots. Things were progressing perfectly.
Now that the minor remodelling and clean up had been finished on this house it was time for him and Fallon to move in. He was still unsure if she was keeping her small cottage in town. Either way, he would be happy to spend any nights together. Shaking his head at his own bestotedness he resumed reviewing the plans in front of him.
Suki had taken care of most of the worries for him already. Reinforcing the windows, metal shutters on a timer but also with a backup timer and also two manual modes. Security doors inside the master suite as well as every outside door. Higher than normal walls for the garden and courtyard. Glass blocks in the master bath were replaced with standard walls and easily secured windows. The overlarge sil would house the shutters but not obscure the view from the inside when open and not be visible from the outside when closed due to darkened screens.
The excavator would start tomorrow on the basement area. He now had some decisions to make. Should he purchase a car and hire a driver permanently or continue to use the service? Should he just give up that free meal and drive himself? This idea did not appeal to him at all. Should he let Suki loose on decorating this house as it is temporary or ask Fallon to find things she would prefer to keep for the next one?
Sighing in frustration, he signed the approval line and rolled up the plans for Suki to take later. Stalking down the stairs to the basement he inspected everything carefully. The two small high windows had been covered over first with a metal plate then drywall. The smell of paint and new carpet hung in the air. Three rooms had been created out of the space; a sitting room with couch, chairs and electronics, a bathroom and a bedroom. All were ready for furniture and items to make it livable for the year they had to stay here. While none of the rooms were cramped, they just seemed rather small in comparison to his suite at Heolfor.
Deciding there was nothing left to do but have Fallon or Suki shop he left the house and went into the woods to explore his new domain.
Standing under the spring sunshine she smiled. Her timberland boots were scuffed and dirty from walking around the site. The weather was nice enough to wear capris instead of jeans. Before her she saw progress and it felt good.
She did need to go shopping if the current house behind her was going to be livable. Waving goodbye to the foreman she made her way carefully to the waiting car.
