Convenience is a luxury. (open)
Ana had lived in the cottage for going on three months when one work-free morning she realized she hadn't so much as explored her neighborhood.
Out onto the street she tromped - if New Balance sneakers tromp, that is - a light windbreaker in a pale blue tied about her waist flapping in the cool morning wind. Playing a quick game of 'eenie meenie' with herself to determine direction, she set off away from the sun, heading west. Cool breezy fingers tickled along her arms, raising goosebumps and making the fine hairs there stand on end. She breathed deeply, enjoying the cleansing pang of the lower temperature morning air against her nostrils, chilling her lungs. Soon, she realized, she'd have to find her small box of scarves, hats and gloves.
She walked for some time, exiting her neighborhood and entering a more commercial and traffic-filled area.
Fidgeting with the protruding collar of her single button polo shirt as she waited to cross the street, she spied the sign of one of Nachton's ubiquitous convenience stores just down the block. A sudden gust of wind down the street drew chills and a soft exhalation of "ooh!" from the librarian as she crossed the street. Avoiding a noxious pile of dog droppings and listening to the passing of a subway train as she clanked across a ventilation grate, she found herself at the entrance of the store's lot.
Steering around the line of cars that had suddenly appeared, likely to avail themselves of the gas prices running $2.04 a gallon, she made a mental note to stop by to fill her car as she entered the store proper.
The twin tones of the entry alarm played; she nodded and smiled to the girl behind the counter then cast her gaze about the store, looking for the coffee machines.
She walked over and gently sniffed at each of the carafes, lined up like glass domino bowls, each labelled with different flavors. Her glasses steamed as she leaned and she grunted her frustration. Tugging them off her face, she stopped as she pulled out her shirt's hem to wipe the condensation away.
"I imagine it's rather fulfilling to see one's work out for public consumption. Most of the stuff I've ever written I've only shared with friends, strictly because those I'd shared it with were the only ones I ever wanted to see it." She shrugged noncomittally. "Though I do enjoy it, from time to time. But you're right, it is rather odd we haven't run into each other yet. I'm usually in the stacks or at the desk, so it's quite possible that while you were near the desk I was in the stacks, and vice versa."
Ana tilted her head at Shay as she sipped again from her coffee, deeper this time. "I'm not a big fan of running. Swimming, though, I could get behind." She got a faraway look in her eyes before she continued, "It's been quite some time since I've been swimming."
Letting out a long breath, Ana smirked. "Not much offtime lately. Been working a bit of overtime to cover the rent of my new place. When I do get free time, though, I hang out with friends or read or watch movies. Haven't even really touched a computer lately except for work... I used to be a bit of a gamer."
However, she wasn't so self absorbed that she couldn't graciously deal with what she almost deemed a small bit of rejection. It hadn't been the first time, and most assuredly wouldn't be the last, so instead Shay just smiled, and nodded when Ana explained her own personal feelings.
"Well, now that I know you work there, I'll make it a point to visit in the evenings. Maybe some nights we can have dinner on your breaks, or something..."
Now that Alexi was away so many evenings, and Shay's book was out of the way, until she started on something new she was aware she'd be at odds finding things to keep herself occupied.
When exercise turned from jogging to swimming, Shay thought she noticed something come across Ana's face. She looked to Wren, wondering if she had caught the change in expressions as well. But at that particular moment it seemed Wren was thoroughly enjoying her doughnut instead.
"I love swimming as well, and our condo compound even has a community pool, but for some reason I've always felt more comfortable jogging alone. Maybe it goes back to when I was little and was taught to never swim alone...not that I'm afraid something will happen, and I drown or anything...but swimming just seems more like a group activity. Is there some specific reason you haven't been swimming in some time?"
Maybe she could do that...get a few friends to come over on a specific evening, and have swim parties. The community pool was inside a large building not far from where Shay's condo was located, and it would be very convenient.
"Wren? Do you like to jog, or swim?"
Of course it also occurred to Shay that with Wren's line of work, she might not really enjoy any other type of outside exercise.
"Hmmmm...then too, I could sign up for one of your classes..."
Dance class! That might be a lot of fun, and it would be something else to get her out of the house. Shay laughed and looked from one woman to the other.
"Sorry if I seem a bit scattered, but at the moment I'm trying to think of ways to spend my evenings, since my boyfriend is working longer hours."
"I enjoy both. I jog every other day, to keep my legs strong and work on endurance. I love to swim, but only the splash and play variety. I'm not a big fan of laps."
She pushed off the hood of the car and tossed the little plastic donut bag into the trash can near by.
"I'd be more than happy to have you in one of my classes."
She grinned again and fished her keys from her pocket. This was turning out to be a great morning and she only hoped it would get better.
"Shay do you want to drop that stuff off at your condo before traipse all over the place?"
They could do that, then try and locate the furniture store. It might be easier with a navigator in the seat next to her. Or do something completely different. Wren was up for anything, it was simply nice to meet up with a familiar face and meet a new friend.
Finishing her coffee, Shay tossed the empty cup into the same trash can Wren had used, but from a farther distance.
"Woot! Score!" She laughed when she saw she'd made the toss successfully. "Besides just dancing, which I love to do, with winter coming on I'm sure my jogging days are numbered, so having another avenue to get rid of energy will be great."
Shay shifted her bag from one hand to the other, and switched Russ at the same time. She was relieved to hear Wren offer a quick side trip to her condo.
"Oh that would be perfect, if you wouldn't mind, I'd drop this little guy off too, if I knew that my other half might be home soon, but I think for now I'd better keep him with me. I can grab my carrier though, in case we need to put him up somewhere for a quick bit."
Almost as if he knew she was saying something about him, Russ whined, and then yipped softly as he looked at Shay.
The thought of dance classes was intriguing, if a bit frightening for the librarian. She had never really been dancing before, at least not before the night at Eternity. "I'd wave my hand and squeak 'ooh pick me pick me' but I'm afraid I'm a more graceful swimmer than a dancer, and that's saying something. In fact, I've only danced one night in the past ten years or so." She shrugged then arched an eyebrow. "Might be interesting to try for a week or two."
When the puppy whined, Ana instinctively went to reach to pet him, but decided it would be better for his 'Mommy' to comfort him and withdrew her hand. She finished her coffee in a quick chug and chucked the cup at the nearby trashcan. She missed completely. "Never was much of an athlete," she could be heard to mumble as she walked over to pick up her trash.
When she returned to the two women, she said, "Back seat's all mine."
Shay laughed when Ana professed her reasons for not liking to dance.
"I think you should try, for at least a week or two...and no one says you have to go for ballroom type dancing...there are all kinds of dances you can do by yourself...well, maybe not ALL kinds...though ballet, tap, belly, pole...those dances are geared more for a single person, right Wren?"
Shay wondered if Wren would tell Ana about her stint as an exotic dancer. Shay still found the idea every erotic, and was hoping maybe Wren would be teaching something along those lines, that Shay could take. Then she'd not only be learning something fun, but something that Alexi might enjoy as well. Nothing like killing two birds with one stone.
Shay really didn't care about where she sat, but took the front seat without argument. She would have to give Wren directions to the condo anyway.
"Ok...take a right at the driveway, and another right at the signal, then it's about three blocks. The street dead ends into the complex, but you'll want another right there too, and I'll point it out when I see it."
Setting her bag on the floor at her feet, Shay strapped herself in and waited.
"Dancing doesn't always have to be done with a partner. I'm going to be teaching ballet, tap and ballroom and one night a month exotic dancing. I figure I might as well make a living on all of the skills I possess."
She grinned at Shay and gave Ana a wink. She really hoped she would have a good turn out for those classes, since they were the most intimidating for her to teach. She dug her keys out of her pocket, and popped the locks. She held the seat forward for Ana to climb into the back, pushed it back into place, and climbed in. She started the engine and took a moment to listen to it purr while Shay told her the directions.
She pulled out of the parking lot and drove them the few blocks to Shay's condo, carefully fallowing the directions given. She'd turned the fan on to circulate warmish air through the car, but had left the actual heater off. It wasn't that cold. She parked where Shay pointed and point the car in park.
"Do you want us to wait here or come in with you?"
It was sort of like inviting herself in, but gave Shay the option of not inviting them in, without the guilt related to leaving your friends in the car. That and she could chat with Ana a little while they waited for Shay to come back.
((Sorry for the delays, it's been a crazy week here.))
But as far as dancing? Shay had danced alone in her bedroom from a very early age - almost from when she remembered first listening to music. So for her to dance alone was a simple feat. And lucky for her too, since that's how she met Alexi. She was glad to hear Wren promoting it to Ana.
"Well I'm serious...when you're ready I'm in for the exotic...I just wish it was going to be more than once a month, but then that really might be more practical for my schedule."
When Wren parked the car, before she mentioned coming inside, Shay had made a mental run through her house to remember if she had left it in presentable condition.
"Oh you're welcome to come inside and wait...it won't take me but a minute, but I don't get a lot of visitors, and wouldn't mind showing it." She smiled widely, and wished Alexi was home to meet her new friends. At the rate his work schedule was going, people who didn't already know him would probably start to wonder if Shay had made him up!
Shaking her head at the absurd thought, she got out of the car and grabbed her bag. Russ tucked under her arm it was just a quick hop and skip to her front door. Once inside she deposited Russ out in back so he could grab a drink and a pee, and then put her groceries away.
"It's small...only the living room, dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and one bath...but I still love it. we turned one of the bedrooms into more of an office, though it will be Russ' room for a while now, and has served as a guest room. Please look if you want too."
She fixed a bowl of kibble, and put it outside for Russ, as she talked. She also omitted describing the secret room, not because she didn't trust Ana or Wren, but mainly because she rarely thought about it.
She followed Shay inside, not bothering to lock the car, it would take care of itself. The inside was as cute as the outside and it seemed to fit Shay. She wasn't comfortable prowling around another person's home so she leaned her hip against the kitchen counter ad watched Shay move around her home.
"This is a great place Shay. It really suits you."
When they stopped, Ana climbed out of the back seat, thanking Wren for holding the seat for her. Shay's condo was a nice little place (though of course Ana preferred her cottage) but she didn't quite understand Wren's comment about it suiting Shay. She stayed hovering near the front door, and peeked into the house a little but didn't move from where she stood. She watched as Wren moved to lean on the counter but couldn't talk her legs into walking her further. "It's a lovely place, Shay. Very sunny, very neighborhoodly." "Neighborhoodly? Where the hell did -that- come from?" Maybe, Ana thought, she was trying to convey the feeling of community that she got upon walking inside. Rolling an eyebrow at the lack of sense she made in her own explanation to herself, she simply shifted her weight and waited.
Shay couldn't figure out why Ana was waiting by the door, instead of coming in, and opened her mouth to ask at the same time Ana decided to enter. It bothered her a little that neither woman seemed really at home, but then dismissed the thought. It wasn't their home, and it was the first time they'd been inside it, so how could they feel any more comfortable?
"But I really like it, and because it's an end unit, it stays quiet...which, because of Mathias' work schedule, is very important...he works nights." She threw in the last part, unable to remember if she had mentioned that part already or not.
She giggled at Ana's interesting description.
"It is sunny...another reason why I love it." And again she omitted the fact that there were black out curtains on the windows that worked extremely well as a protection for Alexi during the day.
"But fortunately, it's one of the more secluded units, and not so neighborly...but that suits us too, since we're really not the neighborly types."
Checking on Russ, Shay saw that he had done his business well, and should be safe for awhile now, as long as he didn't eat or drink anything else. Picking him up in a towel she grabbed from the hall linen closet, she rubbed off the dampness he had picked up from the shady grass, and set him down on the living room floor while she wrote out a quick note to Alexi, explaining her whereabouts, and washed her hands. In case she didn't get home early enough, she wanted her man to know where she had gone, and that she would be anxious to see him later. Then picking up her purse and pet, she was ready to go.
"All set and ready when you are."
"So should we hit the furniture store first? You guys can help me pick out a chair. I'm hoping they have something purple."
She couldn't quite shake the uncomfortable feeling she'd had in Shay's house. She really wanted to; she knew she needed more friends than just Fallon, Aishe, and Suki. But then she had known they wouldn't be staying at the place for more than a few minutes, and she imagined she hadn't given herself enough time to relax and feel 'at home'.
Then again, Shay hadn't said 'make yourselves at home,' likely for the same reason - no sense getting comfortable enough to stay for an hour when you've only got five minutes. Pondering in silence, Ana didn't think of it as a reflection on Shay as a hostess; just as one of those things that stuck in her head. "Furniture's fine with me, you said you needed a chair anyway. Maybe I'll find something for my place, or at least get an idea of what things are, too. We can multitask, after all!"
"Purple? An office chair? That might not be very easy to find...you may need to special order something like that. Unless you're lucky enough to find more of a casual type chair that might suit." Not that Shay was an expert on office furniture, but she had checked around quite a bit before she'd bought the one for her own office.
Smiling at Ana's compliment of her home again led Shay to thinking about what she might do to make it feel truly more homey. Again she came around to thinking it was probably just the fact that besides her, Alexi, and Tristan...the only other person who had visited was Paul. For someone who had lived in the house a year now, that was a sad state of affairs. When had she become such a recluse? Unconsciously she held Russ up to her cheek, and rubbed his soft face against her. It was an attempt at finding comfort, and seemed to work a little.
(ooc - all three out and to the store )
