Ilya had the (mis)fortune of being attacked in Moscow’s Sokolniki Park by a Kadzait Werewolf intent on killing a certain Naval Captain. This Naval Captain’s wife happened to be Ilya’s latest conquest. After enjoying a romantic tryst in a summer-house behind the Olyeni Ponds, Ilya was set upon by the Werewolf who mistook him to be the husband.
Ilya was savagely mauled around the arms and shoulders as he tried to defend himself. It wasn’t until the screaming woman called out Ilya’s name in fear, that the Kadzait realized the mistake that had been made. The Werewolf promptly ran off into the darkened Park, leaving Ilya badly bitten and bleeding.
The whole event was a fiasco. Illya was eventually drummed out of the Soviet Navy on medical grounds to avoid a scandal, and the furious Naval Captain was intent on having Ilya fed to the KGB and sent to Siberia.
It was the Kadzait Werewolf who attacked Ilya that proved his salvation. The headstrong Vasilisa Fanakov kidnapped Ilya off the streets of Moscow before the KGB could get to him. Vasilisa offered no apology to Ilya but gave him an explanation. As Ilya had done with the willing Naval Captain’s wife, so Vasilisa’s younger sister had been forced to by the Naval Captain himself. It was something that Vasilisa could not forgive, and a harsh lesson that Ilya would not soon forget.
Personal Questions
1. Describe your character's personality?
Ilya is a socialite at heart. He is the sort of confident, intelligent and self assured man that most men wish they could be like; and for most women Ilya’s handsome looks and attractive personality often leads them to the bedchambers in his arms.
And through all the attention Ilya remains calm, collected and laid back.
Most of the time.
Ilya’s astute eye and quick tongue can easily turn vapid when he enters one of his dark moods. These tend to pass quickly however, and Ilya goes to some lengths to avoid being in public when his mood turns for the worse.
2. Describe how your character would appear to a stranger (I.E. typical dress, way they carry themselves etc.)?
Ilya carries himself in fine style, and suitably dressed for the occasion. He walks tall and commands an air of respect and authority, whether wearing a tuxedo and engaging in polite conversation, or ordering underlings around the kitchen while wearing the Chef’s uniform.
And when Ilya does dress down, he makes it look effortless. As if he’d stepped out from the pages of GQ in designer fitted jeans, a plain cotton t-shirt and Italian leather shoes.
3. What does your character likes?
Fine dining, fine conversation, and fine women.
And most assuredly the fine dining first, especially if prepared by Ilya’s skilled hands.
Ilya is a Chef extraordinaire and loves exploring new recipes and ingredients with as much vigour as he pursues his latest alluring female target.
Although Ilya’s smoking habit would suggest otherwise, he believes in a healthy body and mind. He is an avid jogger, is widely read, and regularly engages in Tai Chi.
4. Dislikes?
Ilya takes pride in each meal or dessert that he prepares and woe betide the mortal soul who fails to appreciate his labour of love!
Ilya detests the smell of rotten fish (and fish markets in general).
Ilya has a healthy disrespect for law enforcement types - a hang-up from the bad old days in the Soviet Union.
6. What are your fears? (please choose and explain 3 minimum)
Ilya fears that he will one day lose his culinary muse and degenerate into creating ‘mediocre celebrity inspired crap for the masses.’ Without his creative drive and passion, Ilya fears he will be just another chef without the capital C.
Ilya fears losing his sense of smell and taste. It’s an irrational fear that has haunted him since he was gifted and he has often commented that he’d rather go blind or deaf than lose either sense.
Ilya is obsessed with his hands and fingers. He constantly has moisturizer and cleanser in reach and has insured his precious digits for a rumoured six figure sum in case of injury or decapitation. His hands are his livelihood and the creative medium through which he creates his culinary masterpieces.
7. What is your character's strengths and weaknesses? (please pick 3 minimum of each and explain in detail how and why this affects your character)
Strengths:
Ilya is blessed with an eidetic memory and total recall over everything he sees, hears, touches and tastes. He never forgets a face or special moment, can accurately determine the ingredients of a served dish by taste and smell, and can commit volumes of literature to memory and recite page and verse months or even years later.
Ilya is the consummate socialite. He is capable of making friends almost anywhere, is adaptive to any social situation, and can have even the most reluctant and hesitant person sharing their life stories and secrets with him. Ilya uses this skill around women. A lot.
Ilya can pull off feats of deductive reasoning based on observation and other sensory information of a person (particularly with women) in a given situation. He uses this skill to seduce women, impress or intimidate men, and give him an edge in discerning the tastes and requirements of his guests and clients.
Ilya is a Chef extraordinaire and a culinary genius. He has a vast repertoire of experience and knowledge from which to create dishes in a variety of styles and different cuisines. Ilya is capable of effortlessly reverse engineering a dish or dessert and recreating it in his own style and his highly adaptive and inventive skills in the kitchen are the envy of other chefs.
Weaknesses:
Ilya is a chronic smoker. He smokes at least two packs a day, although he never touches a cigarette when cooking.
Ilya is a womanizer. He lives for the chase and pursuit of ‘unattainable’ women, and quickly becomes bored once he finally beds them. Needless to say, this has gotten him into trouble within the past, and will most likely do so in the future.
Ilya’s periodic moodiness is caused by sensory overload. He is like an open sponge that continuously soaks up stimulus around him and eventually it becomes to much for even him to handle. He usually deals with such moods with liberal amounts of vodka.
Ilya is highly allergic to shellfish, he can handle preparing it but once he eats only the tiniest ammounts he will blow up like a yelly fish, he really dislikes this because as a chef he should be able to taste everything he prepares and this holds him back, he loves working with oysters but a person will never see him taste the aphrodisiac.

Although Ilya is a self-professes lover and not a fighter. He learnt unarmed fighting techniques in the Soviet Navy, and is a skilled proponent of Aikido and Tai-Chi. Years in the kitchen have also made him extremely skilled with a knife. He can twirl a knife around and through his fingers with little effort, and his throwing aim is impressive. Ilya prefers to disarm and mildly injure an opponent to dissuade them from further attack.
Ilya is a prolific and skilled writer and orator. In the past he has made a modest income from writing classical romantic poetry. Of course he also uses his skill with prose and the spoken work in his seduction of women.

Quirks and Habits worthy of mention
Ilya has a habit of speaking in the third person when he’s cooking or under stress.
Personal History
Ilya Derunov was born in Moscow during the summer of 1946, a middle child with an older sister and a younger brother. Ilya was expected to carry on the family Naval tradition and he enlisted in 1962 at the age of 16. Ilya was never really officer material, but it was established during basic training that he was a dab hand at cooking. Ilya was quickly apprenticed to a one of a handful of Naval chef’s who produced exquisite meals solely for high ranking Naval Officers and visiting Party Officials.
Ilya learnt that some comrades were more equal than others and as his culinary skills progressed, so did his contempt for the Communist regime and the corrupt Naval Officers who served it. Ilya considered it a travesty to be making such fine meals for top brass, and he began to indulge his other passion which eventually got him into trouble - womanizing.
Ilya knew he would never be promoted to a command position, because his occupation was considered to be valuable to Naval affairs where he was. Chafing at the velvet collar he was forced to wear, Ilya began to seek his revenge by cuckolding the wives, girlfriends and mistresses of his Naval masters. And for a short time, the charming, intelligent and handsome young man was kept busy in the kitchen and the bedroom.
In the paranoid society of the Cold War Soviet Union, it couldn’t last. But it wasn’t the KGB that caught up with Ilya. It was an embittered young Kadzait werewolf, Vasilisa Fanakov. In the spring of 1965, she attacked Ilya by mistake as he was leaving another successful tryst. Vasilisa eventually realized her mistake, stopped her attack, and left Ilya bloodied and bruised.
Ilya was promptly drummed out of the Soviet Navy on ‘medical grounds’ to avoid a public scandal involving a Rear Admiral’s wife. Knowing that Ilya would eventually be turned over to the KGB and vanish into the wilderness of Siberia, Vasilisa took it upon herself to kidnap Ilya off the streets of Moscow and into the world of the Kadzait.
For his own safety Ilya was spirited through Eastern Europe and eventually across to the United States during the early 1970’s.
