I prefer dull spring breaks

I had a nice visit with the parents for spring break then returned
home Thursday due to having a home interiors party scheduled on Friday
night. I wanted to clean house and do some cooking for the ladies
that hopefully would come. I was up till 6am cleaning and sprucing
(couldn't relax after the drive for some reason). Went to bed at that
point and then at 9:30 a loud noise woke me up. I jumped up and saw
what appeared to my sleep fogged eyes to be smoke. I thought the
attick fan had exploded or caught on fire and so I jumped up and
headed for the nearest exit. I realized quickly that there was no
fire or smoke, but a lot of dust. What in the world?

I peeked around the living room wall and just gaped at the image
before me for several minutes. About a third of the ceiling had
fallen in bring all kinds of insulation dust and regular dust gathered
over the previous 30 years or so with it. I ran back to try and do
some damage control by closing all possible doors to other rooms to
avoid having to deal with the mess quite so extensively.

Then called the land lady and a few others to see about getting some
help. With my damaged lungs the dust was already causing problems. I
opened doors and stood outside waiting for reinforcements to arrive.
Which they did in the form of the landlady, and two friends. They did
most of the really dusty work though I tried to help. I ended up with
a coughing fit at one point, even with a mask, and so was regulated to
outside until the worst was gone.

About seven large construction sized trashbags of dust and insulation
(not to mention the ceiling itself in peices) later, I was able to
help in the kitchen part dusting and cleaning up the mess in there. I
have a lot of dust still there but it is livable now if I stay in the
rooms I closed off as much as I can. I have a sunroof (well rafter
roof) view in the living room which is rather unique. hehe The
landlord's dad is bringing a fellow by tonight to look at what needs
to be done to fix it and prevent it from happening anywhere else in
the house. There wasn't a leak or anything indicating that the roof
had water damage. It is unknown as yet what caused the problem.

I am still having my party, though it isn't as pretty a house as it
was at 6am this morning, and the snacks are going to be limited to
cookies and tea since I don't feel up to making anything else right
now. In fact, even after a much needed shower, I am quite exhausted.
Go figure, I only got maybe three hours of sleep. waaaahhhh

Spring break is wonderful until you get home and the ceiling falls in.
The sky is falling the sky is falling. I am attaching pictures of
what it looks like now. I was too shaken up this morning when it
happened to get the mess on camera, but this should give you a hint of
what damage was done.

Hope your week is boring. hehe

just tell everyone who comes you've decided on the industrial design look and you're golden Seriously that sucks!! But if that's the worst that happens during your vacation it wouldn't be so bad eh?

Wow! I'm glad you're ok, and that it happened in the living room and not on top of you. I hope they get it fixed up quickly and that you are back to being safe and sound soon. *hugs*

Wow, that must have been quite a shock out of a sound sleep. I agree with Amby, definitely tell them all that you are remodeling and that its meant to be that way.

Yea, what Ginnie said...can't imagine if it had happened over your bed!

Giggling about the excuses for the "new" look. Amen on the not in the bedroom thing and yeah not a good way to wake up. They are getting quotes on the repair work and predict that it will be sometime next week before the work starts. I just hope my lungs don't rebel on me with all this dust and stuff. We got most of it cleaned up but I have my doubts. Cross your fingers.

Well that bites. And I know what you mean about your lungs. My dad has horrible lungs, the common cold regularly turns into pneumonia.

Yeah wheezing a bit and that concerns me but trying to stay in the two far extremes of the house (bedroom and office with computer lucky me) for now. Slept most of today. Needed it badly. They start work on the repairs on Tuesday. Joy and happiness.
