Rippling Water (attn: Nikhila)
Lily sat quietly in the lounge inside the Castle, her outward demeanor radiating calm and poise. It betrayed nothing of her inner turmoil, for years of self-schooling had taught her that even when it is a mere facade, the projection of cool control will help any situation.
In this case, she was unsettled. Not only because of the circumstances that had brought her to Nachton, but because she had been shirking her own duties of late. Seeing Iov and Aidan again had been a balm to her troubled soul, and knowing they were close was a comfort, but Stafford still needed running and overseeing things was Lily's primary occupation.
In this case, it involved some of he research the organization funded. While Lily valued honesty and openness, and strove to teach her family the value of these traits, there were times when deception was necessary. This was one of those times. The news that had reached her keen ears was not news that could be sat upon. It required action, covert and shadowed. Like a play, what was seen openly must cover the flurry of activity unseen in the wings.
And it had been a very long time since she'd seen NIikhila, the only person Aidan had ever Gifted in the course of his life. A good choice, she'd always thought... and of course she'd hoped the way mothers do there might be something more to their friendship. But that sort of things was not for her to push or strive for.
Shaking her head at her foolish fancies, Lily folded her hands serenely in her lap and waited patiently for Nikhila.
However, being asked to meet now, after so long left Nikhila feeling a bit awkward. Things hadn’t worked out quite how the tall Indian woman had planed, rather unfinished to say the least. However, not being an overly romantic sort Nikhila didn’t let these thought cloud her judgment.
She found Lily waiting, apparently for her.
“Good evening. I’m sorry about being late. I was slightly detained.”
Very slightly, two, three minutes perhaps five but it had been unavoidable; still it annoyed Nikhila to start things off on that foot. It was unprofessional and it wasn’t like her.
It was even more annoying when one considered how every curious Nikhila was about this meeting. For while she liked Lily, it had been some time since the two of them had spoken in person. There were one or two areas where their interests overlapped, some more than others. Undoubtedly this evening had to do with one of them.
She smiled very softly.
“I should also apologize for not calling on you sooner. I believe Xeph did mention you were in Nachton.”
With any luck that would be the extent of her apologizing for the evening. It was inexcusable that she had been so lax in matters of respect. There was no excuse for not seeking out Xeph’s mother before this.
That didn't exclude he exchange of pleasantries however; it had been years since Lily had seen her son's piarak and spoken to her. Nikhila had alway been a wanderer and Lily envied her her freedom in a way. She'd never have traded her family for it, but there was no small part of her that wished she'd had the bravery and means to do as Nikhila had done and explored her world more.
"Aidan told me you were here as well, but I haven't had a chance to seek you out either," she responded to Nikhila, her way of letting he woman know there was nothing to apologise for. "We all have our private lives to take care of, and in truth I've been busy arranging things for Liam."
The funeral, the remains, every detail about her husband needed to be taken care of. Not to mention her formal and complete withdrawal from Canberra's pack. Lily would not return; not while Aidan was still here in the States. She had waited a long time to be able to visit freely with her son.
It didn’t settle her mind to know that Lily had also known she here. Was this a Pack or not? She should have made time to greet any new arrival and especially Lily. It was impossible to change the past so she simply resolved to be more diligent in the future.
The mention of Liam’s passing caused a cloud to pass over Nikhila’s usual clam expression. She had known of Liam’s death, she’d encountered Xeph not long after. But having inherited some of Xeph’s memories made the whole situation… … confusing.
“I had heard. I am sorry.”
It was heartfelt. Losing a loved a one was never easy and the few words she had spoken offered support and what ever help Lily might need.
At the younger amaroq's condolences, Lily simply smiled softly. "So am I," she answered. "For all his faults, Liam was a good man... once. And I loved him once, too."
She shrugged her slim shoulders. "He was my mate. For all that he lived under the influence of the moon for a bit too long, he was still a fine Alpha in his day. I miss him."
It was her way of delicately putting into words the fact that Liam had been quite mad at the last. But even so, what she said was true. He'd been her husband and mate. Secretly, she silenced the part of her that rejoiced at he freedom his death afforded her, but that part of her would never show.
Shifting slightly, turning toward Nikhila, Lily studied the woman a moment before changing the topic.
"How have your studies been going?"
Nikhila's intelligence and curiosity had always been two of the things Lily liked most about her. They were very much suited to their lives, particularly the drive to know and understand and question everything around them.
Rarely did Lily ever come straight to the point in a conversation; her way was far more subtle than that.
Lily didn’t need to justify anything to Nikhila. That and she knew most of what Lily said. Not only could one hear the truth of the other woman’s words, there were memories that were good, happy, both powerful and positive; even if Nikhila didn’t always understand them all. Besides, if Liam hadn’t started out as a good man and alpha he wouldn’t have picked Lily as a mate and wouldn’t have had such a fine son and alpha in Xeph. For what ever came after, the beginning was good.
She never would have pressed for a change of subject. If Lily needed some one to talk to or simply listen Nikhila would be more than happy to do both for however long Lily desired. Conversely, she would not press Lily to dwell on the subject and was quite happy to embrace the new topic.
“Quite well thank you. I was working up in Maine before Xeph contacted me. There was a team there that was quite intent on forcing on virus, over the course several generations, through several mutation and then back to its original form. I, personally, didn’t think the theory was sound but it had some interesting results.”
And they had gotten grants. How that had happened was well beyond Nikhila, she suspected one of the researchers had an ‘in’ with the foundation but couldn’t prove it. Nor did she have a rival request and therefore she wasn’t worth bickering over.
“I’ve also been keeping tabs on several other projects.”
Which was to say, a dozen at least. Some she was personally involved with on one level or another and others she was only corresponding with the lead researchers and still others she was simply reading about as findings were published.
And of course, she was still working on her languages. Her Farsi was getting quite good and she was debating which one to take up next. However, to say more would boarder on boastfulness. Something Nikhila would avoid at all costs.
As Nikhila finished, she smiled softly, an air of apology in her tone as she said, "Do you think you have room for one more project? This one may require more than just keeping tabs. I need someone with your background and knowledge, someone clever."
Lily regarded the woman beside her with very serious eyes. She already knew Nikhila was up to the task, but she had to be willing to perform it for it to be of any good to the Pack.
While she’d never asked directly, Nikhila had wondered from time to time if Lily and Xeph shared some talents; at least as far as being able to read the members of their Pack. Certainly, Xeph had had no, or very few doubts, that Nikhila would accept a position here at the school in order to serve the Pack. Now she suspected Lily knew the answer before the question was asked.
“Of course. What ever you need.”
She didn’t even bother to ask what the project was, how long, how in depth or even if it was possibly dangerous.
Keeping her voice modulated to its usual soft tones, Lily said, "As you know Stafford Enterprises and the Stafford Foundation are devoted to research of all kinds. Scientific, medical, even to some extent historical and anthropological. "
This was information Nikhila knew, of course.
"We've been providing grants to researchers with unique and plausible theories for years now. It's been productive for us, and productive for our kind."
She waited for Nikhila's nod before continuing. "The problem is, recently some of the lab researchers we fund have begun delving into a particular anomaly they've discovered in some blood samples. They don't yet know what it is; all they know is that the samples are abnormal."
The expression in her eyes told Nikhila what she needed to know; how the blood samples differed from normal human blood.
"I don't know how they got a hold of these particular samples, but now that they have them we cannot and will not simply silence them or stop their research."
Dawning was beginning to spread over Nikhila's pretty features, and Lily continued.
"Sabotage, however, is entirely within our means. They've submitted a formal request that we offer funds for a new researcher, someone who specializes in microbiology and genetics. Of course we're willing to fund them... and we'll supply the scientist, although they won't know it's us who've chosen you."
Lily leaned toward Nikhila slightly. "You must work tocover what they've discovered, or at least confuse the matter so that the truth remains hidden. This virus that makes us what we are must be our secret. The world is not yet ready for this knowledge and we cannot trust these adlait with our deepest and most intimate details."
She let Nikhila soak everything in, settling back once more and waiting for her response.
Abnormal? That could not possibly be good. The way Lily said it Nikhila had a fair idea of what they had found, even if they didn’t understand it. God help them all.
Stafford wasn’t going to shut down the project? No. No of course, they couldn’t do that. It would raise even more questions. Lily was quite right it wasn’t that easy.
A double agent? Nikhila nodded again. Yes, she could do that. It would let Stafford know exactly what the researchers had uncovered, hopefully how they had found it and she would be able to throw them off as well.
“Yes, of course. Are they here in Nachton? Is there any way I might be able to see what they have done so far?”
"Everything I know so far is in there," she said. "Every report I've gotten, every emailed correspondence."
Folding her hands in her lap once more she added, "They're here in Nachton; I can give you directions and everything you need to know this evening, so that you can begin working with them this week. I've already told the head researcher I'd be sending in a specialist as they requested. There are three of them working on this project."
She inclinded her head towards the folder again as she spoke. "Their profiles are in there as well."
A somber expression crossed her face and Lily reagrded Nikhila for a moment longer before saying, unnecessarily, "Be careful. I know they're just scientists, but a scientist on the verge of what he or she thinks is a new discovery can be very... driven."
Lily didn't really expect Nikhila to be in any danger or she'd have selected someone else for this position, but it never hurt to put the warning out there. Throughout history lives had been lost in the names of religion, science, difference, and any number of smaller reasons, just because someone believed in something enough to kill for it.
“I’ll be ready by Monday. It’s going to take some time to go over this. Its not that what they are doing is terribly complicated, at least not at first glance, its simply a lot of material and it would hardly do to go in under prepared.”
Already absorbed in formulas and logarithms trying to determine what they might know as well as how to muddy the issue Nikhila almost didn’t hear Lily’s slight concern. She looked up rather sharply, her brown eyes steadily and objectively regarding Xeph’s mother. Finally her whole expression softened.
“Always.”
She fully understood the near madness and possessiveness that could seize those of her profession as they stood on the edge of a discovery. Nikhila wasn’t terribly worried about it still it was very kind of Lily to be concerned.
When Nikhila raised her eyes to meet Lily's, the older woman's features melted into a gentle smile.
"Aidan would kill me if anything happened to you," she admitted softly, almost hesitantly.
The history was complicated between the two, Lily was sure. Aidan had never told her much about it up front, but Lily's unique intuition told her that beneath the surface of both amaroq was a far more turbulent background than she had been privy to.
She had missed so much of Aidan's life, and now her first big move was to send someone very special to him into potential danger. Lily resolved to keep close tabs on Nikhila and make her mission as safe as she possibly could.
"Keep me updated regularly," she said unnecessarily. "Weekly will do just fine."
Willing herself back to calm with a few slow breaths, she only smiled. It was far too late to pretend she hadn’t reacted though.
“He’s a good Alpha. Very careful of his pack, as he should be.”
Nikhila had to bite off an urge to ask more of Lily. If perhaps there was more to her statement.
Fortunately Lily returned to the matter at hand. Quite suddenly scientist running amuck with the Pack’s future in their hands seemed like a safe topic.
“Yes, of course. Should I come across something pertinent I’ll let you know immediately.”
It went without saying that she also, not expected, but knew, Lily would offer the same courtesy.
Again there was a slight awkwardness, at least on Nikhila’s part. Lily had called the meeting and it was her meeting to end. Was there something else to say? Something she had missed?
"He is a good Alpha," she agreed with Nikhila. Eveything Liam wasn't, at the end.
With a very small, final sigh, Lily stood. "Thank you for coming, Nikhila. I know you'll do your best. Be clever though, stay hidden and stay out of danger. If you need anything at all, let me know. And if you see anything strange, don't hesitate to tell me."
She knew Nikhila would do her best. Lily just hoped nothing would go wrong in the process. She had faith in the woman, however. She was dependable and smart. All that remained to be seen was the fruits of her labors, and that would come in due time, as with other things.
((ooc: Lily out!))
She merely nodded at the other advice and direction. It wouldn’t be hard to stay out of the limelight, certainly, the other senior researchers would want all the glory and accolades and she was happy to let them have that. Even if she hadn’t wanted to muddle the situation, she would be happy to let others have their moment.
How much trouble could she get in? Really? It was just a little scientific espionage.
It had taken her a second to notice Lily had left when she did Nikhila shook her head and smiled at herself. Perhaps it would be better to go to her office and review this, or better yet her rooms. She could cook something and then look over these files.
