Hammerthynn had asked him out to lunch. He even said he'd pay. Right then he knew something was wrong.
'First off - why are we eating here? If you have bad news to tell me, your 'butter up' skills are lacking.'
Brig grinned at his unresponsive cousin who just looked out the small diner's window. Looking over, Brig could see the heat waves rising up from the streets with patrons quickly running by, sweating in almost nothing clothing, sandals and sweat stained faces.
It was hot. Really, really hot.
Still, Brig sat comfortably in the air conditioned diner with his short sleeve polo shirt and khaki pants. He tapped his fingers on the table as he waited for his cousin to confess.
Jesus, he thought. Telling a lie was usually a lot easier but for some reason he just felt foolish for doing it now.
'Very boring.' He nodded, as if trying to convince himself.
Apparently he wasn't the only one feeling the need to keep some secrets. Mentally she shrugged, she could live with a little bit of anonymity. Digging into her bag she pulled out her cell phone and checked the time. Tucking it back in, she pulled out several bills and left them on the table.
'I should go.' She slid out of the booth and stood next to the table, resting her hip on it. 'I don't want to keep you, but I enjoyed meeting you, Brian.'
Carol smiled warmly and held out her hand.
'Indeed, the pleasure was all mine.' Using both hands he held onto hers and gently played with her knuckles, quite the invasion of personal space but he wagered (and hoped) she wouldn't mind.
'Can I walk you somewhere? Get you a cab?'
'Please,' she said with a dreamy smile. 'I mean yes. Sure. Yeah, thanks!'
Pulling her hand away Carol turned and blushed three shades of red. As she reached out to exit, Brig's arm appeared over her head, pushing the door out for her. Another three shades of red were discovered and they walked out into the chilled September evening.
