Potholes along the way.
(continued from here )
Jillian didn't feel too guilty having Drew accompany her shopping. It had been his suggestion, after all, even if she jumped on it before he could take a breath. So far, other than the older Alpha, his date, and Hammer...all who were way outside of Jilli's peer group, Drew was the only person she had she might have had anything in common with, that she had spent more than ten minutes talking with.
Yes, there were a couple people in her classes that seemed nice enough, and who she spoke more than two words to, but as of yet time in class was as far as those friendships had gone. She hoped eventually she would fit in, and these school time relationships might blossom, and turn into more than just an occasional 'hi', and 'did you read that chapter last night'? But until they did, she was content to let things progress at their own pace.
Getting to know Drew better was better anyway, since they had the similarities in their backgrounds...the whole werewolf connection. This was something Jillian was only now starting to see as a possible hindrance in the way it could effect relationships with others. She wasn't anywhere near ready to make any commitments to someone, but it would come to that eventually...and then what?
"Almost there...I think...I drove by what looked like a mall on the way to the library, but didn't really give it much thought...which was kinda silly since I knew I had to go shopping at some point or another...I guess my mind was focused on Beowulf...though that didn't seem to last too long."
If she didn't know herself better, and realize that she would get back to the book probably later tonight, she might have had reason to be irritated for dropping her studying for shopping. But she did know she was a good student, and after having gone this route several times in her past, had no qualms about putting off her reading a little bit.
The parking structure was right where she remembered, and she breathed a sigh of relief pulling into it.
"There...not TOO painful, right?" Now that they had reached their destination, Jilli felt safe in looking at her passenger. Had she looked earlier, and seen him in too much discomfort, she probably would have driven slower. But then the ride would have drug out, and any pain Drew suffered would have been prolonged as well. All she could hope for now was that he still had that sense of good sportsman ship she thought she picked up on earlier.
Grinning at her, he slid the bills, well most of them he did bulk up the tip a bit, back into his pocket and then out of the booth.
“All right all right you win. Remind me not to mess with you during the full moon. You’d probably bite my nose off or something.”
He –might- have an advantage during the full moon but he hadn’t seen her out running, or at least hadn’t known it was her so no guarantees there.
Catching her jab, he did a double take and let his eyes bug out a bit.
“Hey that’s not fair. I mean she was cute and all but she had an engagement ring…”
Noticing that he’d let slip just how hard he’d been looking Drew laughed.
“I’ll get you back for that later.”
Packages gathered he offered her his elbow, he didn’t have much in the way of hands left.
“I vote… that way. Lead on!”
Besides all that, Drew had also given Jilli companionship. Not that she wanted to pay for that, and didn't think she had for a minute, it had made her evening so much more special to share it with him. In light of all that, how could he begrudge her paying for his meal? It was a relief to hear he wasn't going to, even if he insisted on adding to the tip.
"Ew...no...no nose biting off...at least not off you, or anyone remotely resembling any of 'us'. Now a nice shove into a swamp, or off a cliff...that could be fun!"
Not that any of that would ever happen. Jilli loved to rough and tumble as much as the next wolf, but she would never do anything that might seriously hurt a fellow packmate. Unfortunately, since size or strength weren't really on her side, the best she could probably do would be to outrun him, and lose him. Knowing he was a smart guy, Jilli doubted he would stay lost, so that really wouldn't do much.
She shook those thoughts away, not seriously contemplating any sort of pay-back or retrobution. Knowing Drew had checked out the waitress made Jilli giggle, but it also made her pause in thought. There was some feeling there, that she was experiencing, and it was foreign to her. It would definitely require more contemplation later, but not now. Instead she slid her arm around his elbow, and headed in the direction he pointed. As it was, they were now retracing their earlier steps, and soon found themselves back at her car.
Once she had her purchases stowed in the trunk, Jilli drove them back to the Den, and parked in a space she was already considering her own. She would have loved extending the evening, and doing any number of things with her new friend, but she had made it through the day without a nap, and was 'living on borrowed time' now, as it were. Though she tried very diligently not to appear worn out, it would become more and more difficult as the night wore on. The last thing she wanted to do was to pass out from exhaustion, and wind up having Drew carry her too! The bags were enough.
"Seriously, thank you, very much, for being such good company tonight."
She smiled at him as she got out of the car and started pulling out her bags.
"I'm sure I can manage the rest of the way home."
And considering the trek from where her car was parked, to her suite was really close, there was nothing but truth to her statement.
"But you have to promise me...if I can help you with anything, even if its just a ride somewhere, you'll call me. Nothing you'll ask will be an imposition...I promise."
She focused her gaze on Drew, and tried to appear as sincere as she felt. This was important to her, and Jilli didn't want him to think otherwise.
Drew grinned not at all worried by the teasing threat. Besides noses were a casualty of playing rough and that was something else he had no problem with.
“But leave off on the swamp. Too… muddy slimy nasty. I can do with out that.”
He contentedly followed along toting and carrying but happy enough when she put things in the trunk. Of course, that still left folding himself back into the car. Oh he was –so- buying something he fit in, gas prices be damned.
When the arrived he watched her very carefully, to be sure she had every thing and was comfortable with it; it wouldn’t do to let her drop it all now. He’d feel terrible.
“Any time, you still need to get out and about. All work and no play yadda yadda yadda.”
Stupid expression yadda yadda yadda but sometimes it hit the nail right on the head. Smiling easily he let the promise be drug out of him, but shook his head even as he said it.
“I promise, but really I don’t get into much trouble. But in the interest of keeping my cliff diving voluntary.”
He winked but at the same time decided he couldn’t let her carry all that herself. It wouldn’t be right, so he helped himself to a good chunk of the packages.
“Go on lead the way and just promise me you won’t tell every one I’m a sucker.”
Letting her lead on and then getting things at least set down he excused himself and wandered off to make a few calls about the adds he’d seen earlier.
