Letting it all work out in...
Reign hoped the Doc knew she would take him up on that, she really intended to come by the Den once in a while. Probably more during daylight hours in hopes of catching people going about their business but if nothing else it was a good place for the mutt to run.
She'd followed him along happy enough not to say anything, she had a lot to think about. The Long Run gave her something else to think about, it was wild enough fortunately there were some paths for the two footed sort as well so she wasn't going to kill herself. The howls struck her, obviously they weren't the only ones out looking for something to chase. The funny thing was yesterday the howls would have seemed sort of creepy, tonight she heard them as almost friendly. Oh good she was going off the deep end, well probably not even as a wolf that one night the Doc had seemed friendly enough. God how strange to just decide to become a wolf to pass an evening.
And apparently the Doc intended to embrace that tonight. Reign did a double take, but curiosity did get the better of her, Bas had always been fairly private about that side of himself. Besides if they were family why would she even think about denying that aspect of him or any of the rest of the pack for that matter?
Of course she hadn't anticipated the naked, but it made sense she thought as she grimaced. That had to hurt, there was no way it didn't the human body wasn't meant to do that. Well when you put it that way he wasn't strictly human was he? Nope his body was meant, after a fashion, to do that. And it didn't seem like he was in much pain, maybe a little but not enough to prevent him from embracing the change. It was, to put it bluntly, fascinating.
Through out the transformation Reign had kept a firm hand on Sirius' collar. He hadn't quite known what to make of the whole thing and she didn't need him doing something unexpected. Good dog that he was though, he just sat at her side and whined a bit. Talk about the devil and the deep blue sea... well massive German Sheppard and ginormus russet wolf any way. Backing the mutt up a few paces and having him lay down and stay Reign cautiously approached the wolf Doc. She wasn't scared, but not 100% sure how he'd react. Still she knelt in front of him, it seemed rude to tower over him by continuing to stand.
"Was that as much fun as it looked?"Â?
It was the Doc, it just... wasn't. But it was... so she had no issues talking to him. And once she got a feel for the wolf side of him then she'd let Sirius come over. After all in her little pack of two she was the alpha and set the agenda especially when it came to werewolves.
((OOC... you guessed it permission to post here via Xeph, such a nice wolf))
She didn't seem at all upset; maybe a little cautious but that was sensible. He sat there and thumped his tail once or twice at her. When she asked about his change being painful, he realized he was hindered somewhat by his inability to lift his shoulders for a shrug, so instead he tilted his head to one side, then dipped it down and up in a very so-so- nod.
Standing, he arched his tail over his back and extended his nose to Sirius'. All things considered he was generally as canine-friendly in wolf-form as he was in human. He wasn't expecting a challenge from Reign's dog, but he was her dog and Xeph waited for her to give the okay. Sirius would come to no harm while he ran with Xeph, that was for sure. Neither would Reign for that matter, but Xeph suspected she worried more for her furry friend at the moment than for herself.
“Yes you can play with him. I just wasn’t sure how he’d handle the whole becoming a wolf thing.”
Sirius for his part was contentedly and socially sniffing his new companion more interested in the wolf than his mistress. Even hearing the occasional howl and knowing they weren’t the only ones out and about she just wasn’t worried, not about herself of the mutt. She probably should be, but she wasn’t. It was also killing her –not- to pet the Doc. But one didn’t go to med school and veterinary and become a werewolf only to be pet by mere mortals so she kept her hands to herself.
“OK you two go have fun with the rabbits I’ll just take a walk. I’m not going to offend any one by wandering around slightly lost am I? No freak outs because of a strange human about?”
Reign just assumed that she, whether by appearance or scent, would be unfamiliar to other members of the pack and had no idea how they’d react to her. There was being OK with humans as part of your pack and then there was a stranger in your territory wasn’t there?
For his part, Xeph butted his head up against Reign, trying to encourage her to touch. She wore nothing about her person that would identify her as an Illamar. While there was nothing official, the Kadzait Illamar had taken to wearing a stylized wolf either as a necklace, bracelet, or some other form of jewelry. Xeph was in the process of making that a formality, because there was a great deal of benefit to it.
A lone woman walking about the Long Run would draw curiosity. Xeph didn't fear for Reign's safety; tonight wasn't a full moon and most of his Pack should be in control of themselves. However, a lone woman walking about the Long Run covered in the Alpha's scent would be undeniably welcome. Xeph didn't intend to leave Reign alone, but there might be a time or two when he and Sirius were out of sight.
He knew she would get the idea as he shoved his head under her hand. He leaned against her as well; if she didn't pet, hug, scratch, or do something else completely human, at least he could rub scent off on her this way. In Xeph's experience though, humans always wanted to pet the nice wolf. Nikhila had done much the same before her Gifting as well.
“OK I might have deserved that.”
After all, she had decked him pretty good early that night.
Not 100% sure how much of the wolf was the Doc and how much was a wolf Reign finally let herself rub his head, scratching him behind the ears much as she would Sirius. That was a hell of a lot of fur, it was soft though; for a second she let herself wonder if werewolves shed and exactly how much of a mess that was. You’d think she’d know that, but she didn’t.
Leaning back against him, half for balance half as a game, Reign finally set to chase him off.
“Go on, you’re heavy. Besides he won’t like it if you knock me over.”
The mutt was taking all this quite well and as far as she could tell, had remarkably good manners when it came to hanging about with a freakishly large wolf. Which, was impressive, it had taken him some time to get used to Bas. But he had also been trained to protect her and she didn’t think any of the three of them wanted that sort of misunderstanding tonight.
With that done, Xeph bounded a few feet away, letting his tail swing lazily back and forth in invitation to Sirius. The message was clear. "Let mom have some time. We can go hang out together."
Xeph didn't plan to go far, but wolf and dog legs carried them so much faster than human legs; he and Sirius could cover plenty of ground while remaining within earshot of Reign. There were rabbits and squirrels to chase, puddles to get muddy in, and all kinds of good things to roll around in. Xeph retained a great deal of his human mind in wolf shape, but that didn't make him immune to the pleasures his wolf brain identified and he very rarely fought against his wolfish nature.
He waited for Sirius to catch up to him and then bounded a few feet away again. Once the dog was following him, he barked once at Reign and took off down the hill into the woods.
Reign was oddly glad to see them take off, well not glad maybe relieved. It was hard to say she just needed some time to think. So, while she did follow after them, more or less, it was at a very leisurely pace. She had a hell of a lot to think about too.
Sure, she understood some of this werewolf stuff, some not all. Did she want to understand more? Reign was confidant Doc would let her walk away right now if that was her choice she’d never have to think about or deal with it again. Especially now that Bas was gone. Funny, that’s what this all went back to. Her werewolf had left her she was lonely and another wolf found her. What? Did she smell like stake or something? What exactly was it about her that seemed to attract werewolves?
Reign decided she didn’t care, she had an offer of some kind of family right now she wouldn’t care if it were mermaids or vampires she didn’t like being isolated. Even when it had been her choice she hadn’t been happy with it. Speaking of vampires, she wondered how Pakpao was. But again decided not to mention the two species to each other. Poor Pakpao would be outnumbered any way.
Lazily she picked up a stick and threw it into the woods, still thinking. This was going to take several days to work out, Reign finally decided. She also reached the conclusion she very much wanted to meet other members of the Doc’s family.
The sound of a stick being thrown jolted him from the path he and Sirius had been on, which crossed back and forth over Reign's. He turned and Sirius followed. They raced each other to the sound of the stick, Xeph the clear winner by several feet. He snapped it up and pranced around Sirius playfully, letting the dog grab the other end. An impromptu game of tuggy followed before Xeph wrested the stick from Sirius and took off. Passing Reign, he tossed the stick at her and playfully snapped his jaws in the air a few times before Sirius barrelled into him.
Tumbling along with the big dog's momentum, Xeph rolled, shook, and barked at Reign's companion before tearing off again, this time doing the chasing.
A little part of her brain said werewolves shouldn’t play fetch, but what the fuck did she know. In fact, it looked like fun and she grinned at the Doc wolf as he tossed her back the stick, almost encouraging her to join them. It was tempting, but the mutt took care of that and Reign couldn’t help but laugh as the big Shepard took off with the wolf in hot pursuit.
“Weave boy!”
They’d done a few agility classes and Reign figured if the mutt could weave between the trees, he’d stand a better chance. Otherwise, the Doc would catch him pretty quick.
Picking up the stick she continued to follow, like a chaperone. Why had Bas kept this part of him so private? Didn’t he think she’d understand? She would have, at least she thought she would have. Maybe it had been her, maybe she’d tried to keep the wolf at bay, pretend it wasn’t there. Probably it was a mix of both. It seemed silly to be learning now. Silly, but right.
Turning while romping was never a good idea, and he looked in front of him just in time to bounce sideways away from a sapling. At least he was gratified to see Sirius' training apparently didn't include "weave" as a regular evasion tactic. The big shepherd was going through the brush instead of around it. A rough tactic, but a fun one. He was going to be pleasant for Reign to brush out tonight.
Xeph leaped over a line of shrubs that Sirius had burrowed through, landing easily on the other side and locating the dog, then tearing off after him leaving Reign alone once more... at least for a few minutes.
Why was she here again? Funny old world she’d punched a man and then been invited round for supper. Not that there had been any food involved but the concept was there. Part of her didn’t understand why the Doc had done this, why he’d brought her hear, opened up this door. Did he want something from her? Did she want something from him?
More thinking was in order and without realizing it Reign started looking about for a place to sit. Although she didn’t look too hard and just made herself at home on the ground, playing with the stick she’d tossed earlier. Maybe part of her was fighting this. Nah… was she? No… at least she was pretty sure she wasn’t.
In the Long Run there were several ponds but tonight she made her way toward her favorite, which was fed by a small stream and thus remained clear and pretty without growing any algae. There were three gazebos around it and Lily often sat, alone with her thoughts, watching the stars or the clouds. The sound of the stream trickling into the pond was therapeutic and while she didn't need any therapy tonght she did have a desire to be outdoors.
Because her aim was to sit on one of the benches and close her eyes for a while, she traveled on two feet instead of four, desirous of having her clothes with her when she arrived.
The Pack was out tonight; she could hear them baying at each other. It was a wonderful sound, wolf harmonies echoing through the forest. As she walked she let her sensitive nose identify the scents. It was every bit as keen in this shape as her wolf shape. As she rounded a bend she smiled; Aidan must be out tonight as well. Perhaps he and Nikhila were running. His scent was fresh but faint.
Her brow furrowed as she came upon a young woman sitting just to the side of the faint path, fiddling with a stick. Here was Aidan's scent. What was it doing on this unfamiliar woman? Having gone unnoticed, Lily cleared her throat softly.
"Excuse me. I didn't see you there," she said, appearing startled. "Am I interrupting you?"
She was immediately curious as to how this woman came to be here. Was she a newcomer to the Pack?
Wrapped up in her own mind Reign wasn't noticing much, which was stupid and she knew it. She was wandering around in werewolf central and she wasn't paying attention, hell she didn't even notice the nip in the air and all she was wearing was a t-shirt. But she had faith that the Doc wouldn't leave her where she'd get mauled and it wasn't that cold out yet. The voice, however, startled her. She'd been half ready for growling and/or wet noises but not two legged company and looked around sharply while quickly pulling herself to her feet. There was nothing offensive in her movement, defensive.. well maybe a bit. She didn't like being surprised and didn't like being in a vulnerable position when she had no idea who she was dealing with.
Taking the other woman in for a second she grinned sheepishly and absently brushed some dirt, grass and a few leaves off the butt of her pants.
"No, not really. Just me over thinking a few things. Maybe I should ask the same thing though, am I intruding?"Â?
Of course the people who lived here would have habits and Reign didn't want to get in the way. She could continue on after the wolf and her dog no problem no big deal, but she didn't exactly want to. Reign had been wanting to meet other members of the pack and apparently she'd found one.
Obviously not, not with Aidan's scent upon her. "You're welcome here. Have you never been back here before?"
Curiosity was getting the better of her, and she shook her head at herself in remonstration. "Forgive my lack of manners. My name is Lily."
She left out her last name, mindful of the fact that some people were intimidated by the fact that she was related to the Alpha. It had happened all the time while Liam was alive. Granted, Aidan was not Liam, but still the principle was the same.
“No, first visit here actually. I’m not sure I meant to stay so late but Doc and I got to talking…”
She took it for granted that this woman would know who the Doc was.
After a few seconds careful consideration Reign decided she liked this woman. She didn’t give off any negative vibes so that was a good start. She might change her mind later, but for now she was going to embrace the positive/optimistic.
She immediately offered her hand at the introductions.
“I think manners are suspended when one party is sitting in the dirt looking lost. I’m Reign.”
She smiled at Reign's assessment of manners. "Manners should never be lost. But, if you would like someplace even better for sitting, there's a bench and a pnod just down the hill here. I'll show you if you like. If nothing else, your jeans will stay cleaner."
She moved to continue down the path, indicating the direction she meant. Reign could come along or not as she chose; either way lily was headed there herself. She could think of no better company than a woman with her son's scent clearly upon her.
In the back of her mind she wondered briefly what Nikhila thought of this woman, but she dismissed the speculation. She didn't think Aidan's association with this lady was anything of that nature. Perhaps it was her own wolfish intuition speaking, but it appeared to her that they were just friends.
Reign grinned at the older woman, clearly goofing. Some times humor was a good ice breaker, it was also a fair way to gage another person. That and she was just a little bit nervous, not quite sure what to expect from Lily. Hell she wasn't even sure if she was human or a wolf, it didn't really matter but it was something that crossed her mind.
"I think the jeans need a washer one way or another but not sitting on the ground is good."Â?
She was quite happy to tag along. While Reign could have asked a dozen questions, maybe more, she also had a great deal of respect for personal space and boundaries and didn't want to offend any one right off. That and she was aware enough of pack dynamics to know her position within it wasn't set yet, she was the new kid and people got to feel her out. She could return the favor, but not as blatantly and certainly she couldn't make demands. But, she could open doors and let Lily ask some questions. Reign had a feeling the other woman was equally curious.
"I guess I didn't intend to wind up here at all today. It was just sort of... you know one thing leads to another. I went to have a chat with the Doc and well here I am. I'm not convinced he knows what to do with me either."Â?
She left out the part about the kidney punch and the elbow to the gut oh and the foot stomp. No mater what the Doc said Reign was still semi convinced that would get her eaten, or at least growled at.
Giving a little roll of her eyes she glanced at Reign. "He's always been a dog person." With a slight shrug of her slender shoulders she added, "It comes with the territory sometimes."
A ways down the path, two large forms bounded across from one part of the woods to the other. One was clearly a dog, much smaller and leaner, while the other was unmistakably Kadzait. Her son, if she were to venture a guess. He wouldn't let anyone not Pack wander these grounds completely unattended, no matter how trusted they were.
At least Reign, whoever she was, was knowledgable about the Kadzait. Lily had suspected as much, for Aidan to bring her here.
As they traveled at a sedate, leisurely pace down the slight hill toward the spring-fed pond in this section of the Long Run, Lily looked at Reign and offered her soft smile again.
"Oh, I don't think Aidan has many questions regarding what to do or not do with you. My son has always known his mind, and he has a good intuition for people. If he brought you here, it's because he trusts you. Anything else will work itself out."
Her own intuition, not as accurate as Aidan's, told her that Reign wouldn't mind knowing who she was. In fact, there were times when the presence of another woman, a kindred spirit as it were, could help ease stress. Aidan was quite approachable, Lily knew, but with two imposing men in command of the Pack, she knew her importance to them. There needed to be a balance, someone softer and gentler. Lily fit that mold and didn't mind it a bit.
Reign half shrugged.
"It must mean -something- he didn't always like my ex. In fact he just was getting to a social point with Bas recently."Â?
So yeah it had to mean something, but what? Was it important? Maybe. Maybe not.
Son? Really? That was interesting. Reign again sized Lily up adding that factor into the mix. Yes she could see the resemblance. It also meant that Lily was probably of the wolfish variety. Between these two factors she was -very- glad she hadn't mentioned her lack of control earlier in the evening.
"Yeah, I got that impression."Â?
She grinned. And -how- she'd gotten that impression the Doc didn't leave that question in doubt at all.
Reign was typically rather aloof and guarded, she preferred life that way. But it wasn't going to work here. She need other input, so she kept attempting to open up, at least a little, even it if was against her nature. It sort of hurt, still you couldn't say she wasn't trying. She also found her self almost laughing.
"He said something like that. I think that's part of the reason we came out here to let things work out..."Â?
She offered a half smile remembering the Doc had said his mother had named this area.
"I'm trying to sort out... all of this."Â? She waved her hands expansively. "I sort of fell into it and then out and now back in. And I've been a bit out of sorts being alone again, break ups aren't fun if any one asks, and of course most of the family is back home."Â?
She left out the 'and I don't think I'm ready to move back and like the idea of having any kind of family about'. Some how she thought Lily could fill in those blanks. That and she didn't want to sound -too- pathetic.
"I see," she said with a smile. It sounded like Aidan had, indeed, brought her to the Den with the idea of "dogsitting" while Reign wandered and thought. Lily considered taking her leave and letting Reign do exactly that, but the young woman didn't seem to mind the company.
"By 'all this,' do you mean the Kadzait?" Reign's words had been just a little vague. Had her ex been a wolf? If so, Lily had never heard of anyone here in Nachton who went by the name Bas, but she didn't claim to know everyone. It was Aidan who had the memory for scents, names, and faces.
She also wondered if Reign meant her home Pack, but Lily didn't ask any further questions. She had a feeling just the one would be sufficient to keep Aidan's young friend talking, as she did seem to appreciate having a sort of sounding-board.
“Being dumped, dumping him, the whole pack thing in general, this pack that pack, there is a lot of all this going one these days.”
Following along Reign lost a little control and swung her stick rather viciously at a bush. Some days she knew just what to do. She understood the next step and understood her own feelings. Tonight, not so much. Maybe it was having the whole of the Doc’s pack more or less offered to her, or maybe it was being given the freedom to think but she was a bit confused.
Finally, she decided she was just going to spill it, that is if Lily wouldn’t mind listening.
“Do you want the whole long story? I’m sure it doesn’t make sense from the middle, or the end… whatever this is.”
