Superstitious
Very superstitious, nothin' more to say
Very superstitious, the devil's on his way
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past
When you believe in things that you don't understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain't the way, no, no, no
- Stevie Wonder
Simon stood quietly with his arms crossed his wide chest and the fingers of his right hand tracing the line of his bottom lip. He mumbled one or two incoherent words as he stood in the ground floor living area of Shiroi Yuukaku's home and was completely enthralled.
He had asked Alec to join him at Yuu's home near the coast to go over the security precautions first hand, and per Alec's suggestion, Simon showed up before dusk. The short walk in the sun from his car to the home was enough to cause steam to rise up off of his skin and upon seeing the almost completely glass structure, Simon did question Alec's sanity for a moment, but the young architect would have never designed something that wouldn't provide some sort of saftey measure for their kind. Simon was not wrong.
The windows were UV blocked, much like Alfarinn's penthouse at the Liefde towers and he stood in the bright sun's rays without harm. This was still not the life for a vampire; this type of exposure, depending on the age of the vampire, would still cause damage. Still, the view was stunning, to say the least, and Simon watched the sun slowly descend into the watery horizon with naked wonder.
Yuu was home. The sound of the shower filtered through the frosted glass partitions into the living area Simon was standing in, but he chose to leave the woman to her privacy for the moment. The news of Senator DeSmith's death, confusing though it was - murder or accident) and Nachton's District Attorney in the same evening had already hit the newspapers and television with much scandal and accusations. Even Kyle Evans had jumped on the bandwagon writing his conspiracy theories which, ironically enough, were true. How do you hide the truth? By shoving it down people's throat.
Simon smiled to himself as Alec entered the home and joined him in the living area in front of the protected windows. Without turning to look at him, Simon complimented him on the success of the home.
'Almost makes me want to be human again, Alec.' He clapped a hand on the young man's shoulder. 'Well done, sir.'
((Ooc - lemme know if it wasn't kosher to touch Alec, I can change it.))
He stepped away from the others at the door and watched Yuu's face harden with an anguish he knew all too well. Under her breath she muttered a curse for Tai and turned her back on him. Simon reached out and took her elbow, guiding her into the living area and away from prying faces in hopes of letting her compose herself.
Ellis had said Tai was a Yakuza, a hired killer within the Asian mafia on the other side of the world and he was stupid enough to be taken in by the vampire lifestyle. As Simon sat Yuu down on the couch, opposite of Ellis who stood looking out of the living area's wall windows, he reconsidered his assumption of Tai's entry into their world. You leave everything behind for several reasons: a woman, money, power, or because you have nothing left to lose. But you give a gift like a turning for even less of a reason and Simon figured he knew why Ellis had done it.
She was desperate.
Simon waited for the others to join him and tried to temper down his anger.
Inwardly he winced as Ellis gave proof of his betrayal to everyone in the room. It didn't bother him to have Simon and the other man know; Tai didn't care what they thought. But Yuu, he admitted, he did care about. He wouldn't have willingly seen her humiliated in that manner if it could have been avoided.
Would he get a chance to try to explain to Yuu what the past year had been like? What do you do when she drops down on you like a wraith in an alleyway and beats you nearly senseless? Was there a point at which Tai could have refused to do her bidding, and would he have wanted to? Even he couldn't answer that anymore and even if he could have, Tai was not in the habit of crying over his past.
Refusing to meet Yuu's eyes, Tai gently levered himself off the door frame with his shoulder and folded his hands in front of his chest, offering a slight, formal bow to Ellis. "If that is your wish, I will do my best to keep her safe." He asked no questions; if Ellis wanted Yuu safe, she would let Tai know everything he needed to know to perform that task. If Ellis was simply playing a game, Tai couldn't rely on anything but his own instancts anyhow.
He only hoped he would have a chance, later, to try and resolve things with Yuu. He supposed he would have to resolve them with himself first, and that he imagined would be the more difficult task. As Yuu and Simon disappeared into the house together, Tai lifted his shoulder at Ellis and the other man still present, indicating that they should precede him. Tai was the real outsider here; he would follow where he was led for the moment.
Sooner or later he and Yuu would be left alone. Whether or not there was anything left to piece together after the storm passed, well, that remained to be seen.
He was infinitely easier to read now that they were bonded. On the exterior he was cool, glaring just a little, but his usual bland self. No real reaction to her emotional raping of the ADA or decision to bring in her newest toy; he was stoic, rigid, and...well Simon.
But with their bonding, his aura was raging just beneath the surface. She infuriated, disgusted, annoyed, and just plain irked him blind with rage. Ellis did not hide her smile or resist the urge to pull out her pack of cigarettes and smoke. However, even she appreciated a grand and luxurious home and admonished herself for even thinking of tainting it. Her sense of priorities made her giggle, nonetheless.
['Feeling how angry you are is almost as good as actually seeing it.']
Alec stared, unblinking, at Ellis. It was quite possible that she was the worst person he had ever started to know. As usual, he found himself wishing that she were not so damn immortal or so very regenerative. Barring an accident involving an industrial forge, he did not see how they would be rid of her. Somehow he doubted that anyone was up to the task of changing her.
And she was in Simon's head. Fantastic.
Emotions fully masked, he glanced between the parties moving into the house and contemplated the purchase of smelting equipment. At the gesture of the Asian man, he walked inside first, senses wrapping around the pair of them unconsciously. If either moved strangely, he would know, though it seemed unlikely.
Perhaps a turbine would work as well. Jet fuel burned pretty hot.
'The point of this is to protect the ADA here. Ellis and I were double booked on a hit that was indirectly meant for Miss Yuukaku. The good Senator was just a distraction,' Simon nodded toward Yuu who was sitting quietly staring at the empty space in front of her. 'Weatherby admitted to Yuu being the main objective, so the question is...who ordered it?'
Simon paused for affect. With a shrug he continued, 'Weatherby's death was imminent. Someone is planning on taking over the hit market in Nachton. With Weatherby and Yuu gone, this person's replacement would be set to ascend to the DA's position. Why risk an election, why not get there by default?'
That was the only answer Simon could figure was the truth. Someone had risen from the ashes of Hillman's compound to take over as the clan's nemesis, if you wanted to be melodramatic about it. The point was, someone was fucking with the system and Simon didn't appreciate it.
'Miss Yuukaku must stay alive at any and all costs.'
'Wait a minute. Why do I need to be involved? It's my life in danger, not yours.' She looked over at Ellis. 'Certainly not yours.' Yuu looked up at Simon from her perch on her couch. 'What...I'm suppose to work for you now?'
Both Ellis and Simon answered. 'Yes,' they said in unison.
'Uh, no.' Standing Yuu moved away from the group that had gathered in her living room. Simon Huntington, not at all the man she thought he was, but definitely the leader. Ellis, cold blooded bitch that probably spit venom as well as spoke with it. Kevin or Alec, pretend architect of her home, but apparently in league with Simon. Then there was Tai. What was he to her now? She asked the question out loud.
'What is he suppose to be?' She pointed at Tai who had entered the room, nonchalant as ever. 'My fucking bodyguard?' Yuu turned away from the others and walked up to Tai. With all the hate and embarrassment she could muster, she slapped him across the face. He had the good graces to let her do it, but she knew full well that he could have stopped her. Yuu felt the pain well up in her chest again, threatening to choke her.
'And just what do you get out of this arrangement?' Yuu cocked her head in Ellis' direction and let her jealousy spill over. 'Or should I ask be asking, how often does she repay you for your services?'
Ellis was growing bored of the woman's hysterical rantings. She wanted to reach out and slap the silly wench into submission for being so weak, but Ellis had to admit that her slap across Tai's face was impressive. Oh, it wreaked of jealousy, but it was fun to watch. Especially when Tai let her do it.
'Without our help, it would be only a matter of time before someone did kill you. Leaving the city might help, but you never can tell who is watching, who is waiting, and who wants you dead.'
Yuu obviously didn't like being told what to do, or who she was working for. Tai could have called that one. He stayed where he was though, arms crossed over his chest. Let her see how it was. Let her know how it felt to be dragged into this thing kicking and screaming. She had no choice, just like he'd had no choice.
And then what? They could be miserable together? He resisted the urge to sigh and shake his head. Patience. Like performing an assassination, patience was the key to all of this. He would simply have to wait and perform his role as a pawn for the time being. He didn't like it much, but Tai couldn't see any other option.
He watched as Yuu approached him, knowing full well what was coming. He stood still, maintaining his pose as Yuu really hauled back and delivered a stinging blow to his face. He simply nodded at her after, a bow that was halfway caught between mockery and respect.
Her words stung more than the blow, but aside from a slight narrowing of his eyes, Tai simply bit his cheek and refused to respond in kind. "This 'arrangement' wasn't my choice," he hissed softly at her, even though he knew the others could hear.
There was so much more to say but not here; not in front of these people. Enough to have to admit that he'd been completely powerless to stop Ellis in the first place; he'd never been able to resist from the first time she'd kicked his ass in an alleyway until the night she'd taken his life and given him this so-called "gift"' in return.
'Why the hell not?' Ellis shot back.
'We know nothing about him. And by we I mean the clan. So what if he's yours? We don't know him and if we don't know him, he's not getting entrusted with clan business. Who is he? What is he? But more importantly,' Simon turned to Tai and closed the distance between them, moving Yuu slightly to the side and behind him. He looked the Yakuza in the eye.
'More importantly...I don't trust him.'
Well, she really didn't, but that wasn't the point. The point was - Simon was questioning her decision and that was really ruining her day.
'He's physically qualified - just as qualified as any other Merc you have in the clan right now...and I should know, I checked. Where he lacks in experience he can make up for with ancient blood in him. Why not use him? He knows her, quite intimately, so what does it matter if you don't trust him? It matters if she does.'
Ellis looked at Yuu who was standing with her mouth opened in shock. She mentally went over what she had just said and then realized her mistake. Ellis opened her mouth into an 'O' and chuckled.
'What? He didn't tell you he's a vampire, too?'
"Give me a break. Don't let her outsnark you," he said, glancing at Yuu and jerking his head toward Ellis to indicate who he was talking about. Crossing his arms he shook his head, irritated with the byplay between Ellis and Simon, suspecting what was going on between them.
"I've proven my capabilities when it comes to defending Miss Yuukaku," he told Simon firmly.
Turning back to Yuu he added, "and when we met, I wasn't. You can thank her once again for that dubious pleasure."
He wasn't about to make excuses to any of them. He was capable of protecting Yuu, of that there could be no doubt, and he didn't mind the job. In fact, if he was no longer employed by the Yakuza as an assassin then bodyguard wasn't too bad a lateral move. At least he would know what to look for.
He also wasn't about to get caught in a cat fight between Ellis and her playboy. He was who he was; if Simon had wanted a say in who Ellis created, perhaps he should have stuck around. Tai had one concern now, as per Ellis' orders, and it was Yuu. She might be shocked and horrified, but he found himself believing that she would take his side here.
The man WAS capable. Apparently he was new...inexperienced was the term that she had used. A fledgling. But with potent blood. Was that the root of the conflict? Was this a stolen child that Ellis was raising, or was he Simon's new brother? Either left a bad taste in his mouth for things to come. The latter seemed unlikely, but plausible. As far as Alec knew, she had only made a single vampire in her entire history. Of course, stripped of her clan and nearly killed by that child of hers...would she seek to replace it?
He just did not understand Ellis one bit. All of it was theory, but it did lead to one pattern. A quick route to power with an subtle theme of emotional anguish. He would rather hate her, but he found that there was a nugget of sympathy there, as well. Alec really needed to stop watching Oprah when he could not sleep.
Obviously, he wanted to take Simon's side. The difficulty is that Ellis had really set things up too well for that to happen. Perhaps things were salvageable. Looking to Ellis, he nodded.
"Yes, he is as physically capable as any merc. Depending on what skills he has inherited from his progenitor, perhaps more than most. That is not the concern. I have no doubt just from looking at him that he is well trained and could likely take many of them in a straight fight. But this will not be. This is an assassination. Perceptive ability, creative use of the environment on a defensive scale and the ability to disrupt the efficiency of perhaps multiple assailants to set the fight to his own terms is necessary as well. The mercenaries under your leadership lacked much of this training. Under Simon, they do not. One of the many benefits of not viewing your clan members as expendable resources to be discarded at the most profitable point."
Looking to the man, he cocked his head, staring.
"He certainly does have motivation to succeed. His desire to protect Miss Yuukaku, despite his training and wish to keep it hidden, is evident...probably to everyone in this room save the one to whom it should matter most. The question becomes whether he is as intelligent as he is dangerous, and how well he can utilize resources at hand."
'...Don't let her outsnark you...'
'...skills he has inherited from his progenitor...'
'...he can utilize resources at hand...'
Yuu covered her face with her hands and rubbed furiously, ignoring her makeup. Maybe if she rubbed her eyes hard enough? She wondered if she could just rub away everyone standing in her living room. How odd that everyone in the room was a vampire, Tai included.
Yuu smiled as she rubbed her eyes and with a monotone voice, declared that she was done.
'Get out of my house.' She said it quietly through her hands.
'You're up to something,' Simon said. 'Is it the priority of hits, is that it?'
'Oh Jesus Christ, Simon. I don't need Nachton to make money.'
'Then what does it matter who protects her? The mercs are perfectly trained to handle the situation.'
'And none of them have ancient blood...'
'I said,' Yuu interrupted, 'get the fuck out of my house.'
It was none too polite, her rather colorful request for the party to be over. Yuu lowered her hands and brushed them against her skirt. 'Tai is fine. I could really give a fuck who you get, but he's fine. Now get your men,' Yuu pointed to the front entrance, 'and get the hell out of my house.'
She didn't bother to wait to see if they did. All Yuu knew was that she was tired, confused, scared out of her fucking mind, and quite painfully betrayed. Stick a fork in her, she's done.
Yuu walked back to the short steps leading into her bedroom and left the vampires to their bickering.
((Yuu out))
'Hang out, make sure she's alright, and she gets whatever she needs.'
Ellis felt the tension from Simon, but again ignored it as she left the living room. She was done arguing.
((Ellis out))
He kept an ear tuned to what was evidently a bedroom door, taking up a post outside it and leaning against the wall again. Once these men left he would conduct a thorough investigation of the home, get a feel for its weak points and its strong ones, and figure out how to properly defend his charge.
Until then, he'd content himself with staring. Insolently, in Simon's case.
((ooc: Tai out))
With a final look to Alec and the Merc standing on the edge of the living area, he issued his final orders.
'Lock it down. Nothing gets in or out without me knowing about it.'
That was the best he could do at the moment, not knowing who or what was after one of the most prized underground positions in Nachton. Who wouldn't want the DA's precarious position of kill assignments and general underground distribution of wealth?
With that final thought, Simon exited the home.
