Can you smell spring? (open)

The wind swirled around her, making her hair dance in various directions as she sat on the edge of rock jutting out into the night sky. Her legs danged over the sides of the angled earth and swung carelessly back and forth. The moon was high and full,The kind you can see even in the daytime, and its light was throwing shadows almost as good as the sun did. To say that she preferred the moonlight to the yellow rays of the sun would be a lie, but tonight it sure felt good sitting in it's presence.

Releasing a rogue strand of hair that had stuck to the semi dried blood on her face, Diane peered down at the light below without alarm. She hadn't stayed furry as long as usual this evening, seeing as she had become to antsy in her fur, and decided to come back to her familiar form. This was something she had gotten much better with over time and with help from Bastian. It was pretty rare that she randomly dropped human anymore and she had even learned to hide clothing in the thick brush to lessen the chance of being stranded naked somewhere. Slowly she had come to embrace the moon and it's ultimate meaning for her. Who would have thought she'd be sitting out in the woods happily chomping on bunnies and deciding if there was enough left to make into good luck charms in this little of time?

It had been a little over 2 months since anything terrible had happened. Life was normal and great and carefree and...and what? Maybe that was what was causing her to be antsy. She had spent so much time planning and plotting and then revising that it had kept her mind busy. Nowadays she killed bunnies and deer. It was monotonous and slowly driving her mad.

Buttoning her long green flannel up to the top two buttons, Diane leaned forward and spit off the edge of the cliff. Total rebel style.

She did have an above average sweet an innocent act, he had to give her props for that. Hell it must be very good as he wasn't watching her nearly as hard or as much as he would some folks.

"If you say so."Â?

His tone and the half smile implied that Ambrose, however, didn't believe her. Not 100% any way, maybe she was a delicate wallflower a majority of the time but just the fact that she'd said something made him think there was something more there.

That was an interesting question? Was she fishing? They'd established she had a significant other, so why ask him? Perhaps she was looking for a meal and much like he'd been, was trying to establish if he'd be missed.

It was hard to describe his family. He had Belle, and that was easy enough to explain the waif, however, was a bit more difficult. Probably better to simply not go into it.

"They understand."Â?

Walking over to the ledge where she previously sat, Diane scooped up the three sets of rabbits feet that she had gathered that evening. Looking back up at Ambrose she smirked.

"I hunt, but not humans."

Shrugging she tossed the little feet into a small thin black bag that had originally been used to store her clothing.

Diane noticed the shortness of Ambrose's sentence and thought that perhaps she had struck a nerve once again.

There was the possibility he was the type that ran off to brood alone when there was problems at home. That could be the reason for his sudden mood change as well.

These were the reasons she was firing off the questions left and right. That and to figure out just how much trouble tonight might end up becoming.

"That's fortunate. Such types of people are hard to find, good for you." she said good naturedly.

That was a lot of feet just floating about Ambrose noted, and no skins or carcasses to go with them. He couldn't smell a fire either, so he doubted she cooked them. Even if she had, he questioned the ability of a little think like her to put away three rabbits; and if she had where were the bones?

Lots of little bells were going off in Ambrose's head and he again sized up Diane. He didn't see any sign of a weapon. Something wasn't adding up here. While he didn't need it per say Ambrose did wish he had better access to his gun. It was currently rigged inside a saddle bag.

"Apparently it wasn't their lucky night and you don't strike me as a trophy hunter. What did those little rabbits ever do to you?"Â?

He'd been ready to leave, but now he wanted to know who or what she was. Some young punk vamp that was too coward or kind hearted to get a proper meal, the kind that only fed on animals. Or was she just your ordinary psycho. Far too many options here.

Not able to make sense of the pattern her questions seemed to be taking Ambrose became very guarded in his answers about his family. He'd not do anything to risk them. He wasn't sure Diane was a thread, but he wasn't going to chance it either.

"And they are worth fighting to keep."Â?

He managed not to growl but there was a touch of challenge in his tone despite her apparent good humor.

Diane thougth about how to answer his question tactfully. In truth the rabbits had done nothing to her but presented as fun prey. They were quick and small and easily scared. She made a little game and spent most of the time chasing them around even when she could catch them. Big game wasn't all her style unless she was hunting with others.

"Well, rabbits would make poor trophies anyways but I make little trinkets with them. Keychains you know? Kids like that kind of messed up stuff, I dont think they realize it's real bunny parts. Some people wittle wood, I make keychains." She shrugged in explanation as if it was that simple.

Her eyebrows went high when he went protective over his family.

What an odd twist of the night. Ambrose had inquired about her having people in her life but when she did it he had snapped and all but threatened her.

And she had thought she was territorial over her loved ones.

"I'm sure they are..." She said hesitantly.

He almost sounded like he was challenging her. For what? His family? Oh god, maybe he was a member of the other pack that she was told was also living in town. Is that how they worked, going around challenging each other for rank status? Diane felt her skin crawl and she wondered just how hard it would be to change twice in a night. She had the moon on herside but still...He'd have to push her pretty hard to the brink of no return before she'd manage it. Her best hope was if he was a Were that he had already changed once this evening too.

"No, they don't look terribly menacing when stuffed and mounted. I'll grant you that."Â?

Actually Ambrose tended to carry a rabbit's foot, he had a bit of a superstitious streak in him. But that was neither here nor there and he simply couldn't shake the fact that there was no evidence of hunting accoutrements any where.

"I tend to fish myself. But I also tend to take a rod and tackle with me."Â?

He said, with a significant look around the area. While he didn't feel like beating Diane over the head with the obvious, he did want her to know something wasn't adding up. He wanted to know how she'd handle it.

Taking a deep breath he found a sheepish grin, it was slightly hollow but he found it. The girl had no idea what was going on with his family. She didn't know they'd adopted the waif after saving her from some sick freak of a vamp that liked to feed on little girls and who had seen fit to attack Belle as well. She didn't know about the waif's uncle and the subsequent accusations of the school district either. Ambrose reminded himself of all this and backed down a little.

"Sorry about that. We've had some family troubles, I guess I'm a bit touchy."Â?

Watching him as he surveyed the area her pulse quickened. It hadn't dawned on her how it must look. There wasn't much left of the rabbits she had eaten, there was some blood in the dirt but it had dried and it was dark. She looked like a mad woman.

Damn.

Steeling her face so that her expression remained casual she shrugged once again.

"Well I do have a knife on me. I just prefer to not have it dangling out when I meet strangers. Gives people the willies. Don't need much else than that and something tasty for them to be attracted too."

Which she had no evidence of having but she could easily explain it away as the rabbits eating it all. Now she crossed her fingers that he didn't call her bluff and ask to see the knife. Even in her eyes it still looked like she waited in bushes to pounce on bunnies. It wasn't a far fetched truth either.

When he took a deep breath and explained his family situation she was glad for the little reprieve.

"It's ok, I'm pretty protective of my own as well."

She had been there before, feeling on edge about protecting her family, and she sympathized with him. Nothing had been worse than not knowing if everyone was safe the second the sun went down. She had spent many hours figuring out ways to ensure their safety and calm her own fears.

"I'm sorry about your troubles and if it's any consolidation, I've been there too. It sucks."

With his perception, well that and years as a fighter, he noted the quickening of her pulse. She controlled herself admirably though. However, he didn't buy her story for a second. Even if she'd talked about snaring the rabbits, he'd have bought it. Of course, there was still the question of what had happened to the majority of the animals. Nope, he wasn't sold.

Ambrose ruled her out as another vamp though. She was probably some psycho, but he decided he was worth watching. He might also suggest that Belle have the waif stay the hell out of the nature preserve with out an escort too.

"And a hell of a lot of patient and some damned fine reflexes. Still, you might want to watch yourself caring a concealed weapon. There are laws about that."Â?

He dismissed the whole subject, but decided to see about learning more about this woman. He just couldn't shake the fact that something wasn't right here.

She did earn points for being sympathetic about his family troubles though. He led Midnight closer to the rock ledge scouting out the best way to climb it. Ambrose had learned the hard way planning ahead was necessary with his leg.

"Can't say I'm fond of them. But I guess you just have to deal with them as they come up. I just need to find a way to deal with them without scaring people."Â?

After double-checking the girth, Ambrose made his way up the rock and remounted. Again feeling whole and secure once he was back in the saddle.

(OOC... I can re-write that bit about him noticing her pulse if you'd like, no worries. LOL he's still going to think she's suspicious either way but let me know. )

Thankful that he didn't inquire about her suposed weapon, Diane nodded mutely. She wasn't used to having to produce a solid story of her actions and she knew she was doing poorly. Maybe it was just better to say nothing.

Diane sighed inwardly and watched in wonder as he led the horse close the the rock ledge. What in the world was he doing examining it so intently? Her answer was soon presented when he used the ledge to clamour up on his horses back. Why in the world did he do that? Why hadn't he just hopped up there? Surely he couldn't of still been stiff from his ride. Holding back a questioning frown she remembered that he had just spoken.

"That's probably a good idea. If you run around frightening too many people it doesn't really help anyone in the end. Sometimes it just makes more trouble."

That was another thing she had learned from experience but, she decided it was best not to say out loud.

Now that she had witnessed a spark of his anger, Ambrose seemed a lot more menacing ontop of Midnight. Doing her best to stay ambivalent in posture she latched her hands together behind her back. Sweet innocent Diane who was not a bunny murdering mad woman, yep that's all she was.

Ambrose dearly wished he'd gotten this gal's last name, but he doubted she'd give it to him now. Still he wasn't an inexperienced hunter, he'd find her again and find out how big a psycho she was, it would just take a while longer. He didn't mind the challenge though. Maybe he'd wind up with something to report to the elder, or maybe he'd just have a good solid reason to invite her to dinner.

Standing in the stirrups for a second, he settled more comfortably in the saddle giving Midnight a firm pat on the neck as he did so.

"I've never been opposed to a bit of trouble. Gets the blood moving."Â?

He planed to be back through her on a regular basis now, maybe even come back tomorrow night to do a more through look for evidence of her rabbit hunting.

Smiling at her Ambrose nodded his head.

"You have a good night ma'am. Careful you don't run into any weirdo."Â?

That said he started Midnight off in a trot. Who knew the evening would be so interesting.

Stepping back she gave Ambrose and Midnight room to turn and gave her back to the emptiness beyond the cliff. Her weariness a little higher than previously, now that she had no doubt he thought something was amiss with her.

Playing it cool she smiled wide and returned his nod.

"Oh I'll try. You have a good one too, it was nice to meet you."

Watching as he rode off Diane waited until she couldn't hear the horses hooves any longer before she cursed herself outloud. Her new task would be learning to be more careful when she spoke. It was lucky he hadn't questioned her any further on any mistakes she had made with her story. Next time with someone else, she feared her luck might not hold.

Slinging the bag over her shoulder, she took off in a different direction than he had left in, keeping to the woods and off the beaten path.
