Be Very Very Quiet We're Hunting Wabbits...

It was the night following his meeting with Diane. Something about the whole thing hadn't set one hundred percent with him. It wasn't that Ambrose was a paranoid freak or anything, but he'd spent years relying on his instincts, knowing when something was off and potentially dangerous. So, they were out following up on it.

He didn't think there was too much reason to worry about things so he'd asked Belle to join him. If he couldn't find anything else suspicious at least they'd get a nice ride in the moonlight and there wasn't anything wrong with that.

Still not being terribly patient he'd reversed his route of the previous evening. They should be coming up on the bit of the rocky overhang/drop off where he'd encounter the young woman the night before. And even with Belle beside him Ambrose was very focused. Probably too focused for casual surveillance, but it had been a long time since he'd had something to hunt, really hunt, and it felt good.

Amir 14 years ago
Amir crouched silently in the tall grass not five feet from the horses and riders. Without so much as twitching an ear he listened to the conversation between them. He recognized Ysabel Yolgrave but not her companion, although he seemed to be a proficient tracker.

It didn't surprise him that the horses didn't show any sign of discomfort at his scent. For one thing, he was downwind. And for another, the few times he'd circled upwind and they hadn't been bothered, he'd assumed they were well-trained. When vampires are in close proximity to herd animals, they must get used to the scent of blood. Failure to adapt meant they were useless.

Amir wasn't necessarily trying to stay hidden from his Clanmate and her friend but he didn't know the other one. Until he got closer to his clothing it would be supremely improper to stroll up with a smile and a wave. He was curious about their interest though.

As they moved off he slunk along behind them, the grass barely bending at his quiet passage.
Ambrose 14 years ago
The new track was bugging Ambrose. He was trying to talk himself into the idea that it was a stray of some kind, a smallish medium sized mongrel. Maybe a coyote hell maybe it was a dog cross breed with a coyote. And maybe it was a little green man or the Jersey Devil. One too many X-Files episodes Ambrose decided.

While thinking this through Ambrose continued to let most of his attention be sucked up by his perception. Something was following them, at least he thought so. He halted Midnight and waited to see if the stalker stopped or passed them.

He didn't turn around though, even though he'd probably given whatever it was the idea he was on to them by stopping but he didn't want to give any more away. Trying to cover up his suspicious even further he made a show of examining another track before moving on. He wanted them/it to show itself.
Ysabel 14 years ago
Ysabel almost ran Vivace into Midnight's rear end as Ambrose stopped and leaned down. She saw his eyes flicker; he wasn't looking at the ground. Drawing in close she raised her eyebrows at her lover.

"What is it?"

She wasn't a fool - tracker she may not be, but intuitive she certainly was. And she knew Ambrose. He wasn't looking at a track.

"Are you all right?"
Amir 14 years ago
Amir watched, amused, with glittering eyes as the two stopped once more. The man leaned down; he was certain there were no tracks there. Amir had been over this stretch of the trail already in his search to discover the very same thing he suspected Ysabel and her companion were following; only difference was, he was certain there had been one of them rambling through here at some point.

They were headed back in the direction of his clothing which was fortuitous. If they were really trying to track these things, he did have a responsibility to Ysabel, at the very least, to make sure she and the man didn't bite off more than they could chew. He didn't know the guy, but the Yolgrave family were Clanmates he acknowledged and liked.

Moving out toward the open he stayed a discreet distance from the horses. They'd shown no signs of anxiety around him thus far but he didn't see a reason to tempt them or startle them bounding through the grass he uttered a high-pitched yip, the typical jackal-laugh the creatures were known for, and crossed the trail once more ahead of them.

Certain he'd been observed, Amir began to flank the two. His sandy coat with its black and white stripes blended beautifully into the tall summer grass, so every now and then he bounded up above it and let them know he was there, each cackle echoing softly in the immediate vicinity, not loud enough to alert anyone far away.
Ambrose 14 years ago
He heard Belle, but didn't acknowledge her. It wasn't trying to be rude or macho or anything, but his attention was divided enough right now. To try and answer meant he would have lost something.

That cackle sound, that gave him the creeps and broke him out of his semi trance. And just in time to as what ever it was crossed the trail in front of them. He was tempted to go for his gun but the creature had gone back into the brush. Besides which, Ambrose didn't have a good reason to kill it. If he had half a reason Ambrose would drop anything from a raccoon to a park ranger with out regret or remorse, but he didn't have a good reason here. Just that this thing was too damned smart and it was gnawing at his gut; his instincts told him something was going on. He just didn't know what.

The sounds it was making were alien to him, totally unnatural for this area.

"Screw this."Â?

He muttered to himself.

"Stay here, where I can see you."Â?

He told Belle before asking his mount to move quickly. Ambrose wanted to get in front of it, he wanted to flush it out and get a good look at it.

Leaving Belle standing there alone didn't make him happy but Ambrose had faith in his ability to shoot at anything that approached her or other wise tried to hurt her. He'd hit it too. He'd been both fast and accurate in life, even from the back of a horse, and vampire reflexes had only helped.
Ysabel 14 years ago
Once again out of her league, Ysabel had no choice but to follow Ambrose's instructions. She heard the strange sound but i didn't affect her as it seemed to have Amber. The strange creature, from what she could see as it darted back and forth and bounced out of the grass, clearly wanted to be seen. Why, was the question.

Ysabel did not have Amber's suspicious nature; it didn't occur to her to consider this animal dangerous with the way it was acting. But as Ambrose moved away a bit, leaving her to nod her acknowledgment to him, she realized that it could very well be a trap of some sort. What sort, she had no clue.

Vivace wasn't bothered in the least and Midnight didn't seem perturbed either, but Ysabel trained her mounts well and they were both very intelligent. She'd have been surprised if either horse reacted adversely.

Making no noise, she simply watched Ambrose and waited to see if he needed help. She wasn't unfamiliar with using horses to round up or flush game; she had done her share of foxhunting back when that sport had been popular.
Amir 14 years ago
Amir was well aware that the man on the spotted horse was attempting to drive him, as if he were a common game animal to be herded. He avoided the man, noting that Ysabel seemed to listen to his directions. it gave him a clue as to the man's identity, making it far more likely that he was a fellow vampire than some random human. The Yolgraves were not known for their human-loving reputation; more for their human-exploiting ways.

As their general direction was still toward the small stand of brush his clothing was in, Amir continued to head that way. He was certain he could give Ysabel and her friend the slip any time, but it would be very difficult to catch them on foot.

When the man on horseback began to press him, Amir simply slipped sideways out of his path, or circled around behind him when he tried to circle Amir. He didn't want to seem too aggressive, but he would like some pants.
Ambrose 14 years ago
To put it bluntly, Ambrose was pissed. This critter wasn't following the rules and he sure didn't like it when it would occasionally come up behind him.

Midnight, however, was handling this much better than he was. It occurred to Ambrose as he wheeled her around that he'd only ever had one horse any where near this good in his life time.

Still they weren't making any real progress and probably destroying the trail in the mean time. Damned it. Breaking off his pursuit he trotted back to Belle.

"It seems to me its headed sort of that way."Â?

He pointed. And it did feel like the creature had a plan. No matter how much it had tried to evade him it always seemed to head in the same general direction. Maybe a den? But it didn't make sense that it would be leading them to its lair.

Huffing in frustration Ambrose shook his head.

"I don't even know if it is important or if I'm just letting it distract me."Â?

It was rare he'd even vaguely allude to the fact that he might not be perfect.

Deciding he didn't really care if he was right or wrong at this point Ambrose made the decision to follow it. Some nights it was hard to shake a scent. Tonight was apparently one of them. The other trail would wait.
Ysabel 14 years ago
Ysabel just watched Ambrose and then shrugged when he returned, committed to following him.

"It looks like a coyote," she observed as the smallish creature bounded deer-like through the grass ahead of them. "Are there coyotes around here?"

She always pictured the desert when anyone mentioned coyotes, although she was sure they must live outside that environment too. The glimpses she was getting of this particular animal were fleeting, but it seemed to have a very delicate body and the enormous ears associated with that particular predator.

The noises it made were just plain unusual, from a series of short laughing yips to almost a hoot. Ysabel had never heard anything of the sort and it appeared Ambrose hadn't either.

His frustration was evident, and Ysabel sought to reassure him.
"It is strange to find a trail of dead rabbits," she pointed out, "and suddenly, while indulging in our curiosity, we find another oddity that seems out of place and strange. Surely there's some sort of connection."

It made sense to follow the laughing canine. Ysabel, again, wasn't exactly Davy Crockett, but wouldn't it have remained hidden if its intent was to harm?
Amir 14 years ago
Amir was finally satisfied that Ysabel and her companion were indeed following him, so he dove back into the grass again and headed for the stand of brush that held his clothing. He didn't necessarily want to shift back so soon, for he too was interested in the trail they were following and found it much more efficient to track in his jackal form, but these woods were no longer entirely safe for their kind. Sure, Amir admitted he had a part in that - but only a part. He would prefer to be present for any squabbles that occurred rather than having his Clanmates caught flat-footed and unprepared.

Ducking behind the bushes he quickly forced his shift and managed to pull his jeans on as he heard the not-so-subtle approach of the horses. Rising and straightening up once more, he stepped out from behind the bushes into the moonlight, crossing his arms over his chest and waiting for them to get there.
Ambrose 14 years ago
He nodded. Yes there were coyotes around here and yes it sort of looked like one in the odd flashes they were getting. But, to Ambrose's experienced eye it didn't move right for a coyote and some of what he was seeing was all wrong and it sure as hell didn't sound like one. Still he didn't fault the conclusion, it was as logical as anything right now.

"I don't think it is one though."Â?

Allowing himself to be reassured Ambrose grinned. Belle was right. This was one messed up moonlight ride. Maybe they should have stayed down on the beach, not nearly as much fun for him, for despite his frustration Ambrose had to admit he was enjoying this, but less perplexing.

And now they had a shirtless, shoeless kid in the path. Great this night just kept getting odder. Had they fallen down a rabbit hole and not noticed? He sure wasn't going to pass this up though. The kid was probably as strange as that Diane woman, they might even be together some sort of twisted rabbit foot popping off cult that lived in the nature preserve. It could happen.

Bringing Midnight to a stop just in front of Belle, and with a bit of distance between them, he didn't feel like being surprised if Shoeless Joe tried to jump them, he managed a polite semi interested smile.

"Evening."Â?
Ysabel 14 years ago
Ysabel drew Vivace to a halt next to Ambrose and did a double take. Of all the Clanmates to bump into tonight, she wasn't certain she'd have picked this one as her first choice.

"Mr. Rashid. How surprising," she said softly, inclining her head respectfully and trying to ignore any impropriety. The appearance of the carnivore made sense now; many of their Clan had abilities that tied closely to animals in the wild. Some could speak to them, some became them. Judging from Amir's state of undress, she would guess the latter over the former. Interesting.

"We didn't expect to see anyone here."

Because it was proper, and because she had a feeling things between these two men could go very badly very fast, Ysabel attempted to start them off on the right foot (no pun intended). She turned to Ambrose first.

"Ambrose, this is Amir Rashid. A Clanmate, and a very old acquaintance of my family."

Smiling down at where Amir stood, firm and confident, arms crossed over his chest, Ysabel said, "This gentleman is Ambrose Townsend, a Huntsman."
Amir 14 years ago
"Obviously," Amir said in response to Ysabel's statement that they hadn't expected company. His tone was dry, but not unfriendly. He liked his younger Clan-sister well enough. He was amused by her sense of propriety, and his lips twitched up involuntarily as she did the first thing any well-bred lady did in this situation - perform introductions.

He inclined his head to the man she was with - Ambrose. The name sounded familiar, but brought no more recognition with it than that.
"A pleasure," he said, leaving it there. A Huntsman? That did explain the interest in the odd remains in the Park and the strange tracks.

"It's a nice night for a ride," he said amiably. "If I might make a suggestion, however, it would be prudent to stay closer to Heolfor."

He glanced up; the moon was waxing gibbous. In a few days it would be full, and the Park wouldn't be safe. He shrugged his shoulders at the pair on their horses, who would surely be a tempting meal. "The trails here are not well-groomed. Don't you fear the footing?"
Ambrose 14 years ago
So it wasn't just a stray dog or other wild animal. That was interesting. It an odd sort of way it made Ambrose feel a bit better, apparently they weren't the only ones hunting something down tonight and they seemed to be on the same trail. Still he hadn't bargained on this being a group outing. He might have said as much but something about Belle's tone and the 'very old'... well he decided not to get too crotchety before he knew who this guy was exactly.

He didn't like the kid's body language either, like he had some kind of authority over them. But he'd play nice for a second or five.

"Like wise."Â?

He didn't just say that. Did he? Holding his temper in check Ambrose counted to ten. To all appearance he still looked relaxed, calm and totally unaffected by what Ambrose considered an insult. The only sign he gave that he was at all irked was a quick subtle glance at Belle. She apparently knew this Rashid character he didn't and like it or not Ambrose knew that Ysabel played politics and connections infinitely better than he did.
Ysabel 14 years ago
Ysabel ignored Ambrose's irritated glance, willing him to be polite and follow her lead. Her lover had somewhat of a problem taking direction from, well, anyone really, and strangers were pretty much on the top of that list. Although Amir's words hadn't been couched in terms of an order, Ysabel read between the lines and noted his stance, his tone of voice, and knew exactly who he was. His authority was based on years and years of life, and while she didn't know what exactly he did, she knew he was in the service of the Clan.

"The footing is a little rough," she agreed, "but that's why we wait until the moon is out and full." She was puzzled by his concern. "Is there some other reason we might not be safe here?"

It wasn't that Ysabel didn't trust Amir. With the safety of the Clan, she trusted him entirely - at least until he knew more about Ambrose. Then, she couldn't say whether or not he'd be willing to protect either of them. It just seemed like whatever he was warning them about, he didn't want to be specific. He certainly wasn't a Clan leader. Perhaps he couldn't be specific. Ysabel didn't know. There were plenty of people with far more authority than the three vampires currently standing in the Park. but only one had lived long enough for the other two to be wise to heed a word of warning.
Amir 14 years ago
Ysabel's questions didn't bother Amir. His authority extended to his children and those Subira or the Clan Leaders placed beneath him, and no further. His unofficial position put him somewhere between the Night and the Hunt, but was undefined and unnoted within those ranks, born of a time long past. If Ysabel and Ambrose decided to ignore his warning, so be it. It was their prerogative, after all.

"I understand," he replied to Ysabel, for it made sense to ride here when the moon was at its brightest. At her next question he nodded. "There are many reasons anyone might not be safe here at night." He grinned at the two. "But the tracks you're chasing, Huntsman, will only lead you to more questions."

He was incapable of providing more than that. Until the Clan Elders decided to educate the rest of their family, Amir's mouth would be shut on the subject. His job was simply to apply his abilities where he was told. If Ambrose wanted answers, Amir was confident that the man could seek out Elder Mai and ask her; she was in charge of the Hunt after all.
Ambrose 14 years ago
Belle should know perfectly well this was his 'good boy' face. Well at least he hadn't shot any one so that had to count for some thing. But by the way she was studiously ignoring his crossness he got the feeling he wasn't doing quite well enough. It was probably best he was letting her do the talking though. After all he would have simply told this guy he'd ride where very he felt like but Belle had the sense and the good manners to -ask-. Not that they'd gotten much of an answer.

Midnight shifted a bit, and he took that as a queue to tweak his expression. He settled on one of polite confusion and something just a bit naively cheerful. It hurt, but it held.

"Nothing wrong with a few questions. Some times you get answers, some times you're just ready for the answers when they show up."Â?

He said with a smile. You couldn't fault his manners there. But he really disliked the idea of being chased off the trail. Especially as Rashid seemed to know what was going on but not sharing. The man was half warning them away from something but not saying what. It was frustrating. Ambrose really wanted the questions right now, answers or no.
Ysabel 14 years ago
"Thank you, Mr. Rashid. We'll take your warning into consideration," Ysabel said with a polite smile from where she still sat on Vivace's back.

Ambrose was being passably polite, at least, which was a blessing. She would attempt to explain later why she didn't want to stick around and play nice with Amir, but for now she simply wanted to find the quickest way out.

"We were heading back to Heolfor very soon, as it is. It's been a long ride."

She willed Ambrose, once again, not to argue. Ysabel didn't have a problem keeping their rides to Heolfor's grounds and her own modest acreage nearby if it meant avoiding another awkward meeting.
Amir 14 years ago
Amir smiled coolly, but pleasantly enough, at Ambrose. "You won't be ready for these answers."

Not if he was any judge, anyway. Ambrose seemed to think he could handle anything, but one wolf alone was nothing to shake your head at, and two had very nearly ended Amir's undead experience. Unless Ambrose could do better... well, he wasn't ready, indeed.

"In that case I won't delay you further. I wish you a pleasant and safe journey home, Lady Yolgrave, Mr. Townsend."

He knew Ysabel would appreciate the formality so he offered it in return for hers. With another polite nod of his head he turned his back to them, gathered the remainder of his belongings, and headed down the trail again without looking to see where they went; his ears told him well enough that they'd gone the opposite way.

And now, he had a mystery to finish looking into.

((ooc: Amir out))
Ambrose 14 years ago
'Well ya don't know till you try.' He thought.

But Ambrose opted not to bait the man in front of them. He wanted to, oh he wanted to, but he held back. It wouldn't be nice to ruin what Belle was working so hard to do. He'd pick a fight in his own time.

Ambrose nodded ash Rashid decided to excuse himself.

"Have a good one."Â?

He managed with the idiotic semi vacant smile on his face. He was doing his best to look harmless and had a feeling that he just looked like a fool instead. Some how he wasn't sure that it wouldn't be a bad idea to let Rashid think he was a fool.

Waiting until he was very sure the other vampire had gone he looked over at Belle and just waited expectantly. He'd like a few blanks filled in here.
