A Lesson in...Communication. (attn: Amir)
Thrilled, did not even begin to describe what Dana was feeling with Amir wrapped around her body, as she drove, actually drove his bike. She had no real destination in mind and as such, simply steered around the traffic that was down town Nachton.
After a bit she felt comfortable enough to do this on her own, so at the next light she nudged Amir's arms with hers and when he let go, she took his hands and wrapped them around her torso. He had fast enough reflexes to help her avoid anything major if need be and this way she could feel his hands. She liked his hands, they were talented, soft and strong.
As traffic thinned toward the outskirts of town she saw the signs for the Park and Nature Preserve. It conjured images of their first meeting and a small smile curled her lips. This was much better than heading back to the manor and one of their rooms. They would just have to remember to scurry home before the sun rose. She glanced quickly at the delicate watch on her wrist, they had rather a lot of time before that would become a dire issue.
She steered them into the Preserve and with some little searching found the same little parking area where she'd first ridden on the back of his bike.
"This seems as good a classroom as any." She grinned at him over her shoulder, as she settled the bike into a slot and cut off the engine.
After a few moments he lifted his head and opened his eyes, taking in her moon-bathed face. "Are you all right? That was... unexpected." Uncalled for. Possibly impolite. Definitely dangerous.
He moved away just a little, so he wasn't crushing her, stretching out beside her instead and offering his arm as a pillow if she wanted. Being nude in the park didn't bother him one bit; it was a common enough occurrence when he was shifting back and forth between forms.
Dana's ready forgiveness didn't relieve the pressure in his chest. His control regained, he concealed it from her. But it didn't change the fact that his own actions shamed him. He should have known better.
Well, lesson learned. If Dana was all right, he would manage as well.
"Amir, I am well. More so than I can begin to explain."
She followed his body with her own, curling around him, taking solace in his touch. She did not understand his unhappiness, and wanted to find an answer. Emboldened by what she had just learned and with her ease around Amir, she decided to not allow it to come out on its own.
"I fear though that you are not. I do not regret any of what we have just shared. I will admit to my trepidation, but then when am I not when faced with something new."
She lifted her head to look down into eyes that glinted in the moonlight. "You must know that it pleases me to be the one you loose control with. You are not lessened in my eyes when you do." Quickly cooling fingers caressed his cheek, as she lay her palm along side Amir's jaw.
"You should not be ashamed at anything you have given, taken, explored or discovered in your time with me." Her voice was a whisper, but the tone was close to vehement as she ever came, and suddenly it was important that Amir understand.
"You have allowed me to become more than I ever dreamed to be. I can only hope to return that gift in some small way."
It embarrassed her when tears caused the last few words to come out broken, as a single drop left her eye and slid down her cheek. There were times when emotion was just to large to completely contain.
"Careful, Dana," he warned gently. "What happened just now, that was dangerous. And it was my fault. I should have been prepared. Now I know better."
He had thought to himself, earlier that evening, in the quiet of Dana's room, that "need" and "want" seemed to intertwine when it came to her. Only, then, he hadn't seen any reason to separate the two. Now he did. He couldn't allow himself to "need" her. Not like that.
Thinking calmly now, he understood some of what had come over him. It didn't explain everything, but he was willing to accept it as a contributing factor. he didn't say any more though, not just then. Instead he bent his head and gently pressed his lips to the tiny, salty tear that traced its way down Dana's pale cheek.
"Why are you crying?"
He raised his head once more and furrowed his brow, genuinely puzzled. He hadn't hurt her; she'd said she was fine, and nothing about her demeanor spoke of a falsehood. Was something else wrong?
Sighing softly she pressed her forehead to his. He didn't understand. How could she help him, with out upsetting him or the balance of their relationship. It was difficult, this. Her mind being so wrapped up in her body. She was not accustomed to them being entangled and liked them very much separate.
"Because...because... So very many things. I don't think you understand just what you have done."
No, she did not think he did, nor did she, not really. It was all so tangled up, and she needed to sort it all out.
Did Dana understand what he'd done? Or what he could have done, or what he nearly did? Maybe not. In this case, might ignorance be bliss? No, he couldn't do that to her. She had to know, in case it happened again. Or if it got out of control while it did. Either way.
Blowing a huff of air from his mouth he gently applied the pad of his thumb to her cheek, removing all traces of moisture. He resettled Dana comfortably in his arms. he didn't like conversations like these as a rule, but if anyone deserved to know things Dana did.
"You give me too much credit," he said. Waiting a few moments, trying out the words before speaking, he continued, "When I was much younger, in my first hundred years, I was just discovering my abilities. My creator and I had to stay close to the city; you know how it is. Your thirst is so much greater when you're younger."
His voice stayed low, measured, back to its cultured silken tones now that the near-rampage was over. "Subira said I would outgrow it, that as I aged I would be able to go longer and longer without feeding, but it never happened. It still hasn't."
Amir made a face of distaste, wrinkling his nose and twisting his smile a bit. "I learned how to go without for a day or two, three if I have to, but when I do that it's... well, it isn't pretty when I find prey."
He didn't mind killing humans. He didn't mind killing several in one night, if that's what it took to sate himself, and it often did. Amir shook his head.
"I don't want that to happen with you. It isn't fair." His face became serious. "It isn't safe. I won't do it again." It was a promise, as much as reassurance.
She curled into him, once more taking solace in his body, where she could find none in her own. "I do not fear you. Perhaps I should, perhaps all that has transpired between us should have me running for the hills."
Her lips placed a small kiss to his cheek. "I can not say that I do not wish to share what we've shared this night, again. I will tell you that I will not ask it of you, but I will not deny you if you need me again."
She smiled at him, a silly kind of smile. Her eyes were still a bit watery, but the tears remained firmly locked there. She wasn't sure she really knew what his life was like, but this small glimpse into it helped her to understand him a little better.
"I have a feeling though that you will make quite certain that you never have need of me again. I'm alright with that as well."
She fell quiet for a moment, letting all of it soak into and through her mind. This night had thus far sent her through an emotional roller coaster. She blew a breath through her lips, and captured Amir's gaze with her own.
"Would you mind doing something for me?"
Her lips pressed to his, a demanding sort of kiss, not something she usually gave to him, but one that she needed to. "Make me forget about this night, even for just a few minutes. I'll face it all later, but right now I really just want to forget. Would that be alright?"
Oblivion in the form of bliss, would be perfect right about now, and she wasn't entirely sure he would give it to her. She may have to face it all now, instead of later, and that might just send her over the edge.
He didn't think he was burdened with anything weighty. But then, he'd always lived as he had. For thousands of years. He didn't seem to be any worse the wear for it.
He listened to Dana's offer, and her admission, with a slight smile. "I enjoyed it," he said. "It was much more than I expected. In every way."
That was also true. Again, the blurry line between want and need with Dana. It would be kinder not to have to go there again. It would certainly be safer. But she didn't need sheltering. She needed to be informed, and that was what he was giving her. Knowledge, understanding.
With that in mind his smile faded at her request. he was quiet for a few moments. Make her forget? Just when she'd seemed to be fine, and to have received something - some... was it pleasure? he wasn't even sure now... from the night.
"What is there to face?"
He had granted her understanding; now, before he could consider this favor, he needed the same himself. They had a good deal in common, but their minds operated on different levels. Amir didn't always understand Dana any more than she understood him. He wouldn't do what she asked unless he knew what her concerns were, why she wanted it.
Running the fingers of his free hand through her hair, he didn't attempt to hide the concern he felt. "Just tell me;" he requested gently. "It's all right."
She opened her mouth to tell him that she wasn't serious and all was well, however, "I have experienced more emotion this night than I ever have in my life. I enjoyed triumph in a sparring session with Bao, and then you found me and that gave me joy. We spent time in my bedroom and that gave me joy and heartache and just a bit of fear for what is happening in my heart."
The words spilled from her as she stared up at the stars and she seemed unable to stop them. "Then we went to Shades' and I was struck by a violent jealousy that was not only strange but shameful." At this she finally looked at Amir.
"In my nine centuries of life, I have never felt anything of that sort, and I've no right to it. None what so ever, and yet it was there, and I must examine it and then to top it all off, we share this incredible life altering thing that while amazing will force you to be careful with me in a way that I am not entirely certain I like."
The breath she had been using left her, and she dropped her head once more on Amir's arm. It was more than she cared to admit, and all so very weakening. There was enough about her that she was certain Amir found weak and pathetic and now there was more, and she had worked so hard not to show him anymore than she already had. There was little she could do about it now. "So, can you possibly see why I'd like to forget it all for just a little while. I promise I'll analyze it all later, but just not now."
"I understand what you want, and I understand why you want it. But I don't understand what good it will do," Amir said honestly. "If I try to, and I say try because I'm not sure such a request is possible, do what you want, what will change?"
He pressed a finger gently to her chest, over her heart. "You will still feel the same things you felt tonight. The same victory, the same heartache, the same love." He used the word without hesitation, for it seemed appropriate. "You will still have felt jealous of Mara, and you will still have been jeopardized by my near lack of restraint tonight."
He didn't understand what about their recent experience had been life-altering for her, for Dana hadn't been forthcoming on that point, but it changed nothing.
"Forgetting doesn't make you more able to cope with it later," he said. "It merely gives you a false sense of security while things grow worse behind your back."
Of course, it had been an emotional night for her. But then, she was a sheltered woman, who hadn't experienced any of this with her creator and was still learning how to cope. In this lesson, Amir had been a teacher more than once and while he certainly didn't presume to give Dana a lesson, he couldn't bring himself to seriously entertain the idea of trying to command her memory. He felt a flash of anger at Dana's Lady Erin, a woman who had created a beautiful child and then stunted her growth for nine hundred years, but he leashed it in.
"Won't you let me help you in some other way?" he offered. "There are more tactics than avoidance."
He rested his palm over her chest. "For instance, I will not be careful with you. I will be careful with me." He emphasized that last word as his lips curved upward again into a smile. "I enjoyed what we shared tonight, but it was too close. We will share it again, many times, if you like, but we will improve upon tonight and I'll be seeing with slightly clearer eyes."
He shook his head. He knew what she wanted. But her request went against everything he stood for. Amir confronted problems head-on. He didn't bury them for later. That wasn't the solution.
"I don't know what to do with it all Amir. I feel overwhelmed and under-equipped. Is it always this difficult?"
She sighed softly, placing her hand on top of his. "I do not like this, but I am asking just the same. Can you help me?"
that was not an easy thing to have done. It was different to learn something like driving or martial arts, but this...this is something she should be able to do for herself and she did not know how.
And, he admitted to himself, while he was hesitant to use the word love to define his own feelings, he was growing far more attached to Dana than he'd anticipated. It wasn't something he'd really reconciled himself, yet, but it also wasn't something he was prepared to turn his back on.
"You're only as overwhelmed as you allow yourself to be." He leaned down, kissed her lightly on the lips. "Stop overthinking, nuuri. You're going to give yourself a headache. It isn't as complicated as you fear."
He gathered her in just a bit closer. "I'll help as much as I can, and as much as you want me to Dana. I promised I'd explore with you, and as far as I can tell we're still exploring."
It was a difficult promise to make; Amir didn't know when or where the Clan would ask him to go in he future. But for the present he was right here, and not going anywhere at all.
"You're right, Amir. And I do want your help, I just have no idea what it is I need."
It helped to calm something inside of her, to know that she really didn't have to sort through all of this on her. Her lips found the soft skin of his throat as she nuzzled close. She did not know how long she would have Amir, but she was pleased that fate had put them together. She needed someone to help her through this time in her life and Amir had been given to her, like a gift she had no idea she needed. She was so certain she could figure this all out on her own, and the scary truth was that she could not.
As he lowered his eyes he realized the horizon was no longer midnight blue, but a suspicious cobalt. Brushing Dana's hair back, he pointed. They'd had a somewhat late start that morning; time flew.
"We're overstaying our welcome," he murmured.
He let her move away a bit and then rolled gracefully to his feet and gathered their things, handing Dana's to her and stepping quickly into his jeans. The rest he didn't bother with; he would shove it into the saddlebag of his bike.
"Do you want to be alone this morning?" He asked Dana. "If not, I'd like it if you came back to my rooms with me."
It was the first time he'd actually asked in that manner. But then, it was the first time he'd used any sort of endearment with her as well. What had happened earlier had bound them tighter, for sure. Amir was aware of it, if not on the same level as Dana. He admitted to himself he liked having her close. But if space was what she wanted he didn't mind that either; everyone needed it at some point or another.
Did she want to be alone? Deft fingers slid the fasteners home, and pulled the zipper to. She had a great deal she wanted, no needed, to sort out, but she wasn't certain alone was how she wanted to get through it all. If she went to her rooms with out Amir, she'd inevitably call Lady Erin and hash it all out with her, and when that was over she would most likely wander the manor until sleep bid her find her bed. Then she would sleep fitfully only to wake and be in need of Amir's company. It seemed it would do her no good to be on her own.
She slipped the shirt over her shoulders and began on the tiny pearl buttons.
"No, I'd rather not be alone this morning."
Her feet slid into the boots as her fingers finished the buttons. Men were incredibly lucky that they could be with out a covering on their torso. Sighing she pulled up the zippers on her boots, and as Amir shrugged into his jacket, they walked back to the bike.
He helped her take her seat behind him, and she wrapped her arms tight around him, pressing her cheek to the middle of his back. The wind drying the tears she wanted out of the way, as he drove them home.
