You Don't Ask the Elder to Ride Bitch (attn: Mai)

Coming out from the Preserve, fully clothed, Amir looked at Mai and then at his bike. It was clear what method he would be using to get to the Manor, but what about her?

"Do you want a lift back, Elder?"

He eyed her speculatively, knowing from long association that she was full of surprises. She could either transform and have him carry both her and her clothing, or she could simply... ride bitch.

Did you offer to carry the Anantya Hunt Elder on your bike, bitch style? This was a question of protocol Amir had never before faced. He figured it was up to Mai.

Mai looked dubiously at the metal horse thing in front of her. At least she had chosen to wear hakama this evening. The thing was making no noise at the moment and she understood that to mean that it was not awake. Since she did not know how to wake it up, Mai would not be telling it where to go.

The offer was made in all politeness and it would be rude to decline. With a nod of assent, she sat down on the back and waited for Amir to revive the mechanical monster.

Amir's lips tilted up in his usual soft, sly smile when Mai indicated her assent and simply climbed onto the seat of the bike. He slid in front of her and sat down, waiting a moment before reaching back and guiding her hands around his waist to clasp them in front of him. Then with a swift motion he started the engine. Mai jumped and squeezed. Hard.

Well, she wasn't about to fall off that way, at least. Amir lifted his feet and accelerated down the long wooded road that led out of the Preserve. Bearing Mai in mind he kept it to a reasonable 'just over the speed limit' rather than his usual 'how many cops can we attract' pace.

A part of Mai realized she might be hurting Amir but it was very difficult to loosen her hold. When the metal thing started moving it just got worse; at least she was prepared for what would happen. The large carriage things were only somewhat different.

Closing her eyes, She leaned her cheek against Amir's back and let the mental images of what was around her flow through her mind. Mai found that if she did not try to hold on to the knowledge or analyze it then it was not so disorienting.

In fact, the loud horse was better than the car thing. She could feel the open air and knew that she could leave at any time. That was somewhat reassuring. Her near bone breaking hold on Amir's ribs eased somewhat as she grew more comfortable with the sensation.

Amir wound the bike through the back roads, sure that Mai wouldn't have a problem holding on or moving with the bike. Poor balance had never seemed to be one of her failings. Her grip loosened slightly; he reached down, patted her hands reassuringly, and let the bike go a little more, leaning down as the wind whipped over them.

Heolfor was not a long ride from the Preserve but Amir took the longer of the routes he could have chosen from. He hadn't been out on the bike for a while, and in case their wolfish companion had friends lurking about he wanted them as confused as possible.

It was in some ways like a meditation. "Be like water..." Lifeforms of all kinds became known to her and then drifted just as quickly away. The only constant was Amir in front of her, like a rock in the river. Mai sighed and released the last of the tension that she was carrying. Tilting her face back, her chin still resting on her companion, she could feel the wind flow past her and through her hair streaming out behind.

Amir smiled, tight-lipped, into the wind as he ducked behind the bike's front shield. Mai seemed all right. Time to fly.

His favorite part was feeling the centripetal force as each corner came and went, and someone riding on the back of the bike as Mai was, in perfect balance, made it easy to soar through each one. Amir had carried people on the bike before who weren't as well attuned to the motions and it made it difficult to really enjoy.

Moments like these were what had made it easy for Amir to catapult himself into the era of modern technology. He ducked his head down beneath his shoulder and let the wind carry his voice back to the Elder behind him.

"Next time, you can drive."

Having found a way to deal with the strange sensation of things moving through her field of perception, Mai found she was prepared for the increase in speed. More over, she might even have been enjoying it.

The turns came and went and they glided along with them, like a bird on the wind. tilting and turning effortlessly. Amir's voice could be heard over the noise and she considered his words for a moment.

Mai's laughter was caught and carried away into the night. She leaned down against Amir's back again and replied.

"I think your horse would not care for me very much. I might break him."

Amir didn't laugh loudly but he was sure Mai could feel him doing so beneath his jacket. He shook his head and didn't respond; it wasn't necessary. The next stretch of road brought them through the edge of the city, which was fun because of the sharp turns. Amir didn't take them particularly carefully; he'd been this way so many times the path was second nature to him.

From that part of the ride to the Manor was not far, particularly at the speed they were traveling. Before long they were slowing down again, pulling into the drive at Heolfor at a far more sedate pace. Amir cut the engine on the bike and waited for Mai before moving.

It would seem from his laughter that Amir agreed with her decision not to drive his mechanical beast. The ride was over quickly and she could tell by the crunch of the gravel beneath the rubber hooves that they had reached the parking drive. Mai slid from the back of the vehicle and then stood still a moment taking in all the things around her.

Once she was certain where she was, Mai walked confidently into the Manor. She was certain that Amir would follow once he had taken care of his horse.

Amir watched Mai leave, noted her direction, and slid back off the bike. Rolling it along, he left it out of the way under cover.

He stood and looked at the manor for a moment, almost contemplating not going in. Almost. Not quite. The impulse to obey his superiors was strong, and they didn't get much higher on the chain than Mai. What did they have to talk about, though? He was Subira's hand.

Then again, he was in Nachton and Subira wasn't here. That made him Anantya's hand. Which was, really, what he was ultimately. Subira or not. Right.

Amir headed in, not far behind Mai, still able to follow the faint scent of fuji flowers.
