Checked out (att: Nara)

Panos stood in the vestibule of the luxury hotel and glanced at the bussiness card the receptionist had given him. Mindlessly he began to moved it betweeen his fingers while looking out over the darkening evening. He had come to advance pay more overnight stays at the Piazza for Nara and when he had tried they had told him she had already checked out. The number on the bussiness card was the forwarding address and phone number to the new place she was staying at.

Maybe she hadn't liked it here. It was often quite busy and maybe she hadn't been able to get any rest. Maybe the staff was rude to her when she came in due to her outfit. Panos looked over his shoulder at the front desk as the four staffed employees smiled and greeted their patrons. If that was the case he'd be back and he'd own this fucking joint before the week ended.

His sudden anger over the possiblity that Nara had been treated poorly shocked him.

Looking back down at the card Panos stepped outside and hailed the man who brought his car around. He would go to the address listed and find Nara and see that she why she had left the Piazza. At least then he could stop determining the many ways he was going to come back into the giant corporation and destroy it. As he began tp pull away he paused and pulled back to the curb.

"Slow down Panos. Don't go crashing into her newly disrupted life and demand answers." He looked down at the number again.

He would call first, and if she wanted him to show up then he would.

She listened to his answers with an attentive expression. Reaching for a chip, she dipped it into the salsa and shrugged. "I'm stuck until I get my paperwork proving who I am all straightened out. I doubt anyone would hire someone with the identification needed to prove that they really are who they say they are. Like I'm some mass murderer or something." She laughed.

She bit into the chip.
"Unless you have some contacts in high places in the social security office and the hall of records that is giving me the run around with my birth certificate, not sure what can be done." She chewed a bit and glanced over with a bit of a smirk.

"Though I wouldn't mind some ear plugs, if you have them. My neighbors seem to be quite vocal in their pleasures." She gave a chuckle. Though it was getting rather annoying and they didn't pay any attention to her banging on the wall to get some quiet. The manager wasn't any help either. "I think its a rent by the hour kind of situation."

His eyebrows raised as he took a chip himself.

"Well I don't have those kind of contacts but I do know people who can get you some documents until yours came in. They would get you into your bank account and anything else you'd need."

Panos hadn't gotten by for as long as he had by renewing his license at the DMV every four years. He wasn't sure how morally right Nara was but if it helped her he was willing to offer.

It bothered him that she was willing to stay in that hole of a motel and listen to prostitutes pleasing johns while drug dealers and gang bangers stood outside her door. He resisted the urge to scowl and kept his voice even when he spoke.

"Are you sure you are you going to stay there? You could go back to the Piazza, at least there you had quiet."

And cleanliness. He thought to himself.

Their food came and he began scraping off half the lettuce that topped his meal. They always put too much but he didn't complain and they never noted his scraping. He didn't want a salad on top of his burrito for crying out loud.

"If not the Piazza then maybe a Marriot or a Days Inn. Those have to be in between the two extremes I would guess. Also I might know somewhere you could work under the table, do you like animals?"

His sudden bright idea was a far stretch but he might be able to make it work. Of course there was a really good chance who he was thinking of would shut him down in a flash and try to kill him, but it was worth a shot. For Nara at least. Nara hadn't done anything wrong and if he knew from past experiences this person had a bleeding heart.

She had been joking, as she didn't think anyone would really be able to do anything to help her, or be willing to get in trouble for her in that way. When he spoke of a possibility, her eyes widened. "Really?"

She bit into the chip and chewed. "Like some kind of fake id or something? Those never stood up to close scrutiny when I was in high school." She chuckled, but it was obvious that she had a bit of a hopeful look in her eyes. Being able to get into her bank account would help a lot. It wouldn't last long with hotel rent, without a job, but it would allow for something more than she was currently staying in.

"I hate it where I'm at." She admitted, as the food arrived. "I just wanted to stretch the money you loaned me as far as I could. I just don't know how long this is going to take with my identification mess." She shrugged. "If I could get into my bank account, there wouldn't be as much stress on the amount I have to save, though I still need to get a job. That will be determined by the red tape of the federal and state governments though."

She took a bite. Looking up as she chewed when he spoke of a possible job. She swallowed.
"I do okay with them, though some more than others. What kind of job would it be?" She asked reaching for her drink to wash down the swallow. "Right now beggars can't be choosers, ya know?" She gave a wry look his direction.

He hadn't expected her reaction but he would be a liar if a part of him didn't get excited that she had a little bad streak in her.

"Believe me this stuff can pass any inspection.Technology these days is above and beyond whats imaginable. All I'll need is a picture of you and your birthday."

Panos pulled out his cell phone and readied it to take a picture with her permission. He liked that she hadn't expected him to pay for her room over at the Piazza even though that was what he intended to do. Bringing that up that option now he felt would only succeed in making her feel like she would owe him more. No, instead he'd attempt the impossible and hope like hell it worked in his favor.

"The works at a vet clinic out on the outskirts of the city. They could probably use some front counter help. I could check it out for you and see whats up, if you want."

If Panos sent Nara out there alone he worried that Diane would kick her out faster than she could blink simply by mentioning his name. Why he thought he had a better chance at going himself was behind him. If he could get Diane to listen to him he knew that she wouldn't turn away someone in need. How many times had she tried to 'help' Delilah.

"So you'll stay somewhere else if I get you a new birth certificate and ID right?"

She grinned. The idea of this maybe working was cheering her up, and the danger of it also had a bit of a thrill to it. "Let's try it then." She sat up and posed respectfully for his picture, trying to look like she might for a driver's license. "My birthday is June 7th, 1990."

"Hey, that sounds great. I could handle working at a vet's office. Though if someone brings in a pet spider or sick ant farm, I'm on break." She shivered. She was not fond of insects, but those two in particular were not something she cared to be around.

She gave him a smile.
"If I can get to my bank account, which requires my identification, then I'd be out of there like a kernel of pop corn in a microwave." She nodded. She quite plainly was not thrilled with her living arrangements but felt it was necessary to cut corners at the moment.

Snapping the picture, Panos once again thanked technology and it's amazing ability to make criminal activity easier.

"Just give me about forty eight hours and we'll have something. My guy is faster than the government." He remarked.

At her declaration of age Panos felt happy he still looked young. He could imagine this wouldn't be going as well if he looked like he was in his fifties. His twenties hadn't been the easiest time in his life either and even though their experiences were in no shape even close to the same, Panos felt himself sympathizing with Nara's hardships.

"Good, it would be nice to know that if you stepped outside you'd be free from harassment from degenrates. Also, I'm not a hundred percent on this or anything but I don't think they deal with bugs or reptiles. I could be wrong but I've got a feeling it's a mostly dogs and horses type of place."

And by dogs he meant wolves but he was leaving that out of the conversation.

Finishing his food he laid his fork across the plate and set his napkin ontop. Checking the time on his phone Panos rememebered he had told Nara that he had to work this evening.

"Is the number I reached you at a good number for future use? I'll make some calls and then let you know about both the job lead and the paperwork. For now though, I must go get myself ready for work or face the wrath of my boss."

"Forty-eight hours? Really?" She beamed at him with a 'you are my hero' kind of expression. "Thank you soooo much." She would be greatly relieved to be able to do something about her situation instead of listening to elevator music while on hold or sitting in a waiting room waiting for some clerk to give her yet another form to fill out.

"Yeah, it's not exactly been conducive to lowering my stress levels staying there." She gave a wry look. She'd been practically sleeping with one eye open. Not that sleep was sound anyway with the noise from the other rooms around her. "Oh, I love horses and dogs. We had a few of each from time to time while I was growing up. Dad tried his hand at breeding horses once, but couldn't make it work financially. So, we had to sell most of them. I sure loved working with them though. And there was always at least one dog around the house." She chuckled. "Usually about two of them were mine, one Mom's and three were Dad's."

She finished up her meal and nodded.
"Yeah, until I'm able to move out to a better motel, that's the best number."

"Yes my dear, the pale under belly of society works at speeds that would shock you. "He joked completely dumb struck by her graciousness.

Pulling out his wallet he placed the bill amount and tip on the table and stood. Stretching out a hand to help Nara up he gave her a warm smile.

"You should fit in just fine at the clinic then. Big animals are their specialty. Let me take you home so I can get your business started. We don't want you to have to endure the hardships of that motel any longer than needed. Thank you for having dinner with me by the way. Your company made the meal much brighter than usual."

He would drive her back to the seedy motel even though he serious wanted to refuse to do so and instead take her back to the Piazza. But he wasn't going to be pushy and she had agreed once she had access to her bank she'd stay elsewhere. Nara would be safe tonight, he knew that for sure. Simply because he was going to stay in the area the whole night and watch her room to ensure it.

"So, I've made friends with someone with connections to the pale underbelly?" She gave a pseudo-shocked glance his way then winked. "Since I wouldn't be here without you, I'm going to consider that a good thing." She raised her drink in a toast. "To the pale underbelly."

She followed him to the car and got in. When they got to her motel, she picked up her laptop, and glanced at him with warmth. "thank you for a nice evening. It more than made up for the horrible day. I'll look forward to your call." She smiled, and got out of the car and headed up to her room.
