Solace

The knowledge that she had spent years as the willing accomplice to a murderer shook Akahana's legendary stability. She knew deep within that she had been commanded with a cover story that she had believed with all her heart. Mahesh was too observant to be fooled by anything less.

Her worlds and identities collided and she didn't know what to do. Her years becoming one of the murderer's trusted people could be for nothing if she could not warn them of his identity and whereabouts.

A part of her still felt loyal, still believed in Mahesh, even adored him. She knew him to be a good man, a very driven, unbalanced, good man.
Akahana was lost, confused.

What did you do when you were hurt and upset? You went home to your mother.

Mai watched the little white fox as she picked her way cautiously through the Japanese Gardens, looking left and right for signs of other visitors. There was a blur of fur as the fox ran the final distance and jumped into her arms.

Smiling down at the small light bundle, Mai said.


"Okaerinasai , Akahana-chan."
