Packs Flat for Shipping (Attn: Kem)

Pyro had called, he'd been working out on the west coast, even farther from the family than she was. He had a new job lined up but he had a few weeks before he had to be in Chicago and he planned to crash her place. Reign was all over that and was excited to see her little brother. But, after she'd hung up the phone, she'd realized that her second bedroom was still a mess. How long had she been in Nachton and it was still being used for storage? God she was lazy.

Stopping over at Kem and Aishe's with a few things Kem might need, primarily a really good whole bean coffee she'd picked up at an import store the other day, the little conundrum had come up in conversation. The next thing Reign knew was she and Kem had wound up at the nearest prefab Swedish furniture and she'd purchased an instant room. Had to love it. Room in a box for a few hundred dollars. OK it wasn't perfect but Pyro would have a place to crash other than the couch (which didn't even fold out).

Together they were starting by putting the boxes and things up in the attic, there was a ladder in the hall that folded down for easy access so that wasn't hard. Reign watched with an odd look on her face as Kem easily lifted a box full of text books, a box she had to strain to lift. And while not a body builder Reign wasn't a small girl and wasn't weak, so she was impressed.

"Are you just showing off or do you really just not notice?"

It was half tease half honest curiosity. Even Sirius, who was keeping an eye on things in the hall, had raised his head as if to look. Although, he was probably more interested in what she was saying than in what Kem was doing.

Kem shrugged at Reign. "Vampire confidentiality," he said. "If you happen to meet them and they don't happen to mind, well, we can start asking questions then."

Sure, Reign was his familiar but he hadn't forgotten the tiny detail of her involvement in Xephier's wolf Pack. He had yet to bring her into Meridian or Liefde, and it was an unspoken sort of agreement between them that Reign was welcome there but generally only if she needed to be there. Her being a human was no issue... obviously. But her lupine affiliations might be.

He had mentioned Evenhet's leader to her but he wasn't going to give out personal details that weren't his to give. He did grin at the idea of a questionnaire, though, and laughed softly.

"All right then. You can write up a survey."

He just shook his head regarding her refusal to compare Jack the Ripper to either Vikings or the mob. Apparently fruit was only fruit if it was Reign's decision. Kem figured if you could compare apples with oranges, why not add a grape or two into the mix?

"How was the Ripper a gunman?"

Kem blinked at Reign. He didn't quite catch the leap of logic there. But he continued to sit back and relax and watch Reign try to put the slats in the bed one at a time. That would never do... they were connected to each other in strings. The problem with them was every time you adjusted one, another would fall off and the whole string of slats would collapse through the bedframe like dominoes.

Oh... like that. Kem hid a grin behind his hand as he rubbed his nose and tried to look innocent.

"I might have had a clue."

He could have done the task easily with telekinesis, but so far this was proving way more fun. If she could make fun of his age, he could find other ways to retaliate.

"I didn't ask for names did I?"

She grinned. They did have an agreement of sorts. Kem himself was fair game but she never asked for names of other vampires or to see vampire HQ. Even now she only half wished to meet the Viking and per-Viking. Apparently her other idea was better received and she nodded.

"Excellent. Is ten pages too long? Essay questions or multiple choice? No names obviously but region and time period."

No one would fill it out. Hell she wouldn't write it but she had no issues thinking about it. What kind of questions would she even ask.

Reign rolled her eyes as Kem failed to follow along with her analogy.

"Not literally but he did work alone. At least most people think he did where as Vikings and the mob are more pack animals."

Like wolves. But that was another thing they didn't talk about. These mutually agreed upon areas of non-disclosure didn't seem to hurt their relationship at all.

Scowling at that slats she tried to work out another plan of attack, but refused to ask Kem for help. Stubborn wasn't her middle name but she did have more than a passing acquaintance with concept. This time she tried to line up all the slats on the side of the bed next to her and then softly drop the other side down neatly. It was noisy, if not overly successful. She made a face at Kem.

"Would you like some popcorn too?"

Still not asking for help. Nope not gonna do that. And she wasn't being grouchy either, Reign was fully aware he done most of the assembly so this was obviously her turn or something. She was just needling him because it was fun.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem lifted his beer bottle toward Reign, acknowledging that she had not, in fact, asked for any names. "Ten pages is definitely too long," he said with a smile. He knew Reign was teasing. Although he wouldn't put it beyond her to actually write up a questionnaire. He wondered how he would explain that to Alfarinn. Please fill this out in triplicate. Not in crayon. And don't doodle on the edges.

He held up his hands and conceded the murderous villain argument. He wasn't going to win, not when Reign got the bit between her teeth and took off. He just shook his head, shrugged, and watched Reign try the thing with the slats again.

Ahh, the old 'one side at a time' method. He'd tried that too.

Predictably, it did not work. He continued to attempt to not smirk and shook his head at the sarcastic offer.
"No thanks, popcorn isn't my salty snack of choice."

Reign, of all people, should know what was.
Reign 13 years ago
"Alright I think I can do it in seven. I like prime numbers better any way."

It was a halfhearted retort at best as she considered the slats. This was really messy. They were all strung together they should act as a single entity. This was turning into a war.

Inspiration struck and she rolled the slats up, like a sleeping bag, as best she could, stood inside the bed frame and rolled them out in front of her. It was working fairly well until she stepped out of the bed frame and tried to pull them back to fill the void where she'd been standing. All of a sudden the ones at the top started to slip and slid like the had a mind of their own. So she went to the other end and tried to straighten them out, which seemed to mess with the middle ones.

Reign swore under her breath and scowled darkly at the slats and debated letting her brother sleep on the floor after all.

Kem's quip distracted her from considering making kindling out of the slats. She looked up at him with a perfect expression of innocence and ignorance.

"I think I have some potato chips in the pantry. Sour cream and onion. Every body loves sour cream and onion. Or would you rather the vinegar and garlic?"

Of course she knew that garlic didn't mean anything to a vampire, not really, but it was fun to play with cliches some times.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem snorted at Reign. "Anyone ever tell you you're kind of odd? And that's saying something, coming from me."

Who knew such things as prime number fetishes existed? That was a new one, for sure.

Kem watched with amusement as Reign's next plan failed her too. He sighed and finished off his beer, twining his fingers together and resting them on his flat stomach. He would help her next time. His way. Unobtrusively, of course. He'd had enough fun at her expense for one night.

"I love garlic," he said, flashing his pearly whites at Reign again. "I don't suppose you'd care to rub some on yourself?"

He wasn't normally so playful about it... but he and Reign had an easy, joking relationship and he was starting to relax around her. This was the first time he'd really made light of their bond. He wasn't entirely sure what she'd make of that, but he thought she'd laugh.
Reign 13 years ago
"I have heard that now and then." Reign snorted and went in to top Kem's declaration of odd. "Pakpao is one of the last people who told me that."

And if -that- didn't say something Reign didn't know what did. The little Thai... er Siamese vampire was down right strange some times. Huh, maybe if these people thought she was odd she really was a bubble off. Oh well, better to be a bubble off than cookie cutter. Reign mentally shrugged the whole idea off.

Reign did a double take at Kem's suggestion but did laugh. She knew he didn't take the familiar thing lightly, it had been a big decision for both of them. Knowing that, she could laugh.

"Some vinegar and olive oil too? Maybe some fresh chives? Kinky Kem. Kinky."

Still grinning she bit her lip trying to think how else to mess with the slats. She finally decided on rolling the ends towards each other, meeting in the middle setting them down and spreading them out like a roll of wrapping paper, and praying.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
"And two out of two vampires can't possibly be wrong," Kem said.

As he'd expected though, Reign didn't seem to mind either the observation or the categorization. But then, he wouldn't have gotten along with her so well if she weren't so laid back, he thought, so it should be no surprise.

He laughed with Reign over the eating thing as well, glad she hadn't taken his own odd sense of humor the wrong way... but then, she was his familiar. Was it even possible for her to do so? He felt a little guilty for his possible influence over her, but they had both agreed to this. He hadn't done anything she hadn't wanted.

He rolled his eyes at her a little.
"No, but if you're not careful there could be a chili-lime marinade involved. Maybe some cilantro."

As Reign spread the slats out Kem unobtrusively steadied them. He didn't guide them into place so much as just make sure they stayed where they were supposed to.

"Nice work."

Standing, he crossed the room to the mattress Reign had purchased for the bed. He tore the heavy-duty plastic covering easily and lifted the mattress up.
"Let's get this all set so you can let it air."

The sheets Reign had bought were already in the wash, but the mattress smelled like plastic and badly needed to freshen up some before it was dressed up anyway.

Kem let the mattress down into place easily and looked behind him; there was still plenty of room left to assemble.

"Omnipotence and immortality must be a heavy burden for ya'll to bear."

Reign said as she rolled her eyes.

She snorted a half laugh and shook her head at Kem's new flavor profile.

"Yeah cause I look like Mexican food."

Finally the slats were all in line. Reign did a little mental dance and swore to herself she'd never do that again. No matter how much it costs, box springs from now on. Or she'd pay for assembly. That was nasty. Pyro had better appreciate it, and he -would- be hearing about it.

She thought about getting some Fabreeze or something to get rid of the plastic smell from the mattress. Ordinarily she'd have opened the window but with the AC on that wasn't a great idea. Oh well.

"I'll race you through a night stand. But you have to promise not to use any extra hands."
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
"It's my cross," Kem said with false modesty, although the shadows weren't too far from his eyes. He was much better about it now but it was still a difficult topic to joke about; he hadn't chosen this life, after all. Having been graced with it involuntarily though, he had opted to work with it rather than take a walk in the sunshine.

Shaking his head at Reign he said,
"I was going more for a Vietnamese profile," he said. "I don't like Mexican."

It was an odd quirk he supposed; didn't everyone love Mexican? Kem didn't. Having spent a great deal of time in Asia he'd developed a liking for the food he had tasted there. If and when he ate out now, he preferred those flavors.

Reign's appearance quip had him chuckling though.
"Okay, I suppose I could marinate you in white bread and mayonnaise. But I'd prefer the chili lime."

He shrugged at the suggestion of a race.
"Okay... you're on. What does the winner get?"

It was pretty unfair... he could read the instructions and he was much stronger than Reign. But, in the interest of fairness, he didn't have to use either of those skills. It hadn't been in the terms but he figured it was unspoken.
Reign 13 years ago
Reign thought she saw something pass across Kem's face. She couldn't place it but decided to take the conversation in another direction. No she wasn't a mind reader, just intuitive about somethings. It was like hustling at a pool table, you knew when you had struck a nerve.

She raised an eyebrow that very clearly said 'Yeah cause I totally look Vietnamese' without saying a word.

"Hey! We marinate our food in beer thank you very much and -then- serve it on white bread with mayo."

Teach him to malign her Midwest upbringing. They had a flavor pallet it just wasn't overly sophisticated. Of course, living in Chicago helped lots of different immigrant communities there but over all she understood where Kem was coming from.

Prizes? Reign thought about that...

"Well... ummm... a beer to be determined at a later date. He's got a batch for fall fermenting now should be good. Or the winner could buy the loser dinner."

Yes she would be getting off cheap there and she was going to mae sure em ate whether he liked it or not tonight but still...
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem regarded Reign levelly. "So then, what you're saying is, you've been marinating for years?"

He grinned at the idea. Reign enjoyed a good brew; that was plain. Kem had never seen her drink terribly hard though so he wasn't particularly worried about that crack.

He shrugged his shoulders.
"How about both. Dinner and drinks. And, wait, the winner buys? What sort of competition is that?"

If they were to truly compete it would be a counterproductive battle... they would either assemble the nightstands slowly or improperly, and how did that help? Kem raised his brows at Reign to see if she had a reason for such an unusual set-up, or if she was just trying to slip one past him. He didn't see it as a foregone conclusion that he'd win, particularly as he didn't plan to make use of any abilities or skills that might give him an edge.
Reign 13 years ago
"Hey! I never... well rarely marinate. Usually it is just a light basting."

She actually was usually a responsible drinker. And you could enjoy a beer without getting shit faced she knew how to pace herself and where her limits were and she respected them. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to just let Kem needle her. She had to protest and 'defend' herself. That was half the fun.

"Both it is then."

She agreed cheerfully. Frowning Reign thought over what she said and realized she had flipped it around. She laughed at herself and the mistake. Outside of a pool hall she didn't usually try and hustle people. Maybe once in a while she might do a little fast talking but not with out a good cause and dinner and a beer wasn't quite a good cause.

"We can go the more traditional loser buys if you don't feel adventurous. Would you believe "Ready, set, go?"
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem wiggled his eyebrows suggestively at Reign. "Okay, I'll take basted. Still yummy."

He didn't miss Reign's attempt to get n edge on the competition by sneaking in an early start. He chuckled as she did.
"Not going to get it by me," he said as he began to un-box his nightstand pieces. "We'll go traditional, only because I want your nightstands to be properly assembled."

Kem slid the pieces out in their bags and tore the plastic open.
"Oh," he said as an afterthought, "No pictures."

The directions wouldn't have helped Reign, but as he reached out and turned the instruction manual over completely he hid the pictures too so neither of them could see anything helpful.

"Where are we going if you win?"
Reign 13 years ago
"Trust me you will know when I'm trying to slid something by you."

She grinned. Actually, he wouldn't. Reign hadn't been a hustler most of her life to be easy to see through. Fast talking, under the right circumstances, flowed naturally. Of course, thanks to the whole familiar bond Kem probably would know. Of course, that too was cheating as far as Reign was concerned.

"Well I'm sure that Pyro will appreciate that. Wait! What? Now that is just mean Kem."

Reign stared helplessly at the various pieces of wood and fasteners and spent some quality time being baffled. Finally she was able to work out top and sides and bottom. But it was the drawers she didn't quite understand. Reign, however, figured that she could make sense of them once everthing else was assembled.

"I don't know actually. I heard of a new Greek place and there is a German place I keep meaning to try and never seem to get around to. I suppose you'll be eating in...."

She cast a grin at Kem. In a million years she never would have imagined comfort and security in offering her neck and blood to some one else. Still with Kem it felt very right.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem narrowed his eyes and stabbed a finger at his familiar and friend. "I haven't had nearly enough beers to fall for that logic," he said. "Maybe another four or five."

Maybe.

Kem smirked at Reign's shock as he deep-sixed the pictures and began to plod through the assembly of his nightstand. The only real edge he had was that he'd assembled stuff like this before and had an idea of what needed to be done in what order.

Still, he tried to go very slowly to give Reign time to catch up. She was his familiar after all, and it was his job to feed her. So it behooved him to lose this battle. He smiled at her crack about eating in.

"Well, I won't lie. I've got a minor case of the munchies. But aside from that German and Greek both sound good."

He wasn't opposed to eating cooked food although he did so fairly infrequently. When he did he was pretty openminded... just no Mexican.
Reign 13 years ago
"And it isn't worth a six pack to con you."

It was that whole supply and demand thing.

"Oh, unless you want to swap to Corona or Keystone or something cheap. I can run out and get it for you."

She was totally unaware of the faces she was making as she started to put things together. It was challenging. Even once Reign thought she had things pieced together right she seemed to pick the wrong fastener and wound up having to stop and try again. But once she got one side done the other seemed a bit easier.

"I don't suppose you ate much back in the day. I mean you wouldn't know how much Greek food now is like what the Greeks ate, would you?"

There were actually recipes you could find and make today and she'd tried out some of them. But it was subjective. You'd never really know without having been there.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem snorted a laugh back at Reign. Well, he wasn't sure what that said about him. Or her. Either she was cheap, or he was unworthy. Maybe both. Instead of arguing the point he just wrinkled his nose at her suggestion. Cheap beer was most definitely not agreeable to him. He wasn't even all that big a drinker most of the time. He could hold out for the good stuff.

Surreptitiously Kem used his telekinesis not to aid himself but to move the little parts and pieces Reign needed toward her without her noticing. If he thought Reign would allow it he'd just roll over and yield and just take her out to dinner, but she was a competitor after all. He dutifully bowed his head and set about assembling his drawers backwards.

"Oh I ate plenty," Kem said, glancing up. "I've always loved studying different cultures and food is a huge part of any culture. So I always sampled. For most definitions of 'sample,' too. And to answer your question, the Greek we get here in the states is nothing like what they ate back in the day."
Reign 13 years ago
Being a history geek Reign regularly had to stop herself from grilling Kem. Eventually she was going to crack and start asking him for names and dates. So far she'd managed not to pin him down too hard (well Kem might not agree but Reign thought she was letting him off easy thus far).

Fortunatly assembly took up most of her concentration tonight. Finally it was up and standing looking stable and about right. Kem seemed to be a bit behind her, but not far. With a final push and some good luck Reign finished, throwing her hands in the air like a calf roper.

"Done!"

She declaired. Hers past muster as did Kem's a few minutes later and Reign managed to be a gracious winner. It didn't take much longer for everything to be completed, cleaned up and put away. Good thing too as Reign was starting to get sleepy. Still she didn't let her friend go home without feeding him.

As usual Reign felt quite relaxed after letting Kem bite her. It really was a good way to end the evening. That and the promise of Greek food.
