Diving In (open)
Julian looked around the jazz bar, smiling. It was a really nice place. The air was smoky but that was all right. There were dim blue lights cutting through the smoke and he could see the floor was packed with enthusiastic dancers. A gentle swing was playing and it felt like he'd stepped right into a movie.
A huge black man greeted him as he entered the club and Julian smiled and gave him a wave. He found his way to an empty table at the back, one of the only ones that was empty. The club, Shades', was definitely swinging, in every way.
Julian tapped his foot to the music and didn't have long to wait before a waitress showed up and asked him what he'd like. He ordered a scotch, neat, and sat back. He had nowhere to go tonight or tomorrow and he hadn't had a drink in a day or two. He didn't have rehearsal until the day before next, and there were no concerts to give. It crossed his mind that he'd been drinking a lot lately, but he didn't see anything wrong with it.
He leaned forward on his elbows and sipped at his scotch when it came, watching the band play and enjoying the music.
He looked the violinist up and down and snorted. A part of him still looked at people from a street kid's perspective and Julian looked healthy and well bred. Jan did wonder about the scars though. Whatever had happened the man had obviously been through some kind of hell and survived. To him, it didn't take anything away from the blond's appearance but perhaps that was because he sported his own. It was simply another facet, a little piece of the story that was the man across from him. "Yeah, certainly. My truck isn't much to look at but the sound system is pretty damn good. Of course you can take them home with you if you like. I've got more."
The waitress came back with their drinks and Jan favored her with a thankful smile and then asked her for his bill. He would take care of it now so that they could head out whenever Julian was ready.
Damaris smiled at her own little joke and then politely faded into the background again. Honestly, she liked it in the background easier to watch and to learn that way. The important part was there were people around. She could see them hear them, feel them. It was relaxing.
While they talked she had been forming her own opinions about both of them. Even if Shades didn't have a no hunting policy Damaris had concluded that nether would be right for that. The blond, Julian, wasn't her type and it was doubtful that Jan would appreciate it.
Truck, interesting. She wouldn't have thought he was the truck type, but of course if he was hauling instruments that would make sense.
The band had switched tempo, something much slower and something familiar to her but that she couldn't place. Damaris was happy enough to turn her attention to the music again.
Julian found Jan to be ridiculously erudite on every topic they discussed. He wondered where his education had come from; he didn't look old enough to have graduated college yet. But he was genuinely passionate about music and that clearly went a long way, maybe he was just self-taught. He had a hard time believing anyone who spoke so intelligently about music wouldn't know what they were doing performance wise.
When they'd finished their drinks they decided to head out to Jan's truck anyhow. Julian was more and more excited to try to mesh his playing with the style of Jan's band, so when they finished their respective drinks he decided to take him up on his offer and go out to his truck.
"Damaris, we bequeath you this table," he said as they stood. "It was lovely to meet you... treat it well, it's a good table."
With that he headed out with his new acquaintance to familiarize himself with something new and exciting to play.
((ooc: Jan and Julian out with permission))
"A pleasure to meet you both."
Perhaps Ambrose would have enjoyed the conversation more, or at least been able to add to it intelligently.
With the young men gone she was suddenly alone, but alone in a crowd apparently meant approachable and soon enough found some one to dance with. That was much more her speed, she preferred something active.
