A Few Supplies (Attn: Ambrose, Gris)
Kiyoshi had to do some shopping. Thanks to Terminus (and Evan and Guillaume by association) he now had the means to do so. He'd been getting a little tight before coming to Nachton, but now that he was settled in with Evan and rent wasn't an issue he was saving hand over fist. He really should try to convince Evan to pay him less, but for now he had a use for some of his cash.
He found what appeared to be the only outdoors store in Nachton and entered it, a little bell tinkling on the front door to let the owner know he was there. Kiyoshi was greeted buy the guy working, a man a few inches taller than he with tan skin and dark hair, wearing a pair of cargo pants and a white thermal shirt with a tee over it. The tee had no words on it, just a picture of the Staypuft marshmallow man face down, sandwiched between two chocolate-coated graham crackers. Kiyo couldn't help chuckling at it. He told the guy he just wanted to look around a bit and was happy when he didn't push; Kiyo hated pushy salespeople.
The store was reasonably sized, much bigger than Kiyo had thought it would be. There wasn't a huge variety in the items he was looking at but they were all quality. He meandered through the displays for a little while, trying to get an idea of what he'd need.
Evan had mentioned camping out under the stars, and he'd also said something about sun-warmed rocks. Kiyo couldn't provide sun-warmed rocks, but he knew fires and he knew how to play with them appropriately. He could fire-warm a rock. He wanted to take Evan camping and do things nicely for his partner, as close as he could get to how it had been described to him.
He had second-guessed himself numerous times. Maybe Evan wouldn't like this at all. Maybe it was completely off base. He should have asked. But that would ruin the surprise. He was just going to have to go for it.
"Ah well, more is the pity. I can show you the field we landed in though maybe one of the next jump will fit your needs.â€
Even madly stupidly blindly hopelessly in love with Alex, Eiryk had no trouble recognizing that this man, havens both of them, were above average attractive. Conversely though, neither was Alex, and so that was only a fleeting thought and he easily moved on.
"Nice to meet you both.â€
He nodded agreement with Greer. That was a perfect place to start.
"Well then with the weather getting nice you won't need anything too heavy, although, it might pay to have the extra padding. Nothing can kill a moment like a sharp rock to the back and I don't care how carefully you cleared your site at just the wrong moment you -will- find one.â€
Eiryk spoke from personal experience here, but at the same time did his best not to react to Kiyoshi's apparent embarrassment. And it was -hard- not to notice the blush, but he did try.
"That one is a good bag and it will zip to another I just don't know if it is going to be -quite- what you're looking for... ah. Here. What about something like this?â€
Not always aware that others might be on a budget Eiryk had found what he was looking for which was a couple's sleeping bag. No need to zip two together or anything like that. It was just a bit on the pricy side, but it was quality and plenty roomy.
"You could even zip two of these together and have a party if you really wanted.â€
After all sleeping bags could be a bit confining and awkward for anything other than sleeping.
Gris was relieved to hear that his friend was not planning on camping near the pack. Of course the park was a place where both packs tended to run, but then what wooded area was not a place for their kind, especially in a city where trees were scarce?
He wondered about the information that Kiyo's 'girlfriend' did not camp much. Did he not know that Evan had camped plenty or was this Evalyn person really someone different? Gris supposed he could ask but he wasn't sure he would get a straight answer out of Kiyo. It was possible to ask Evan; he had known him for much longer. However, he did not want to get Kiyoshi in trouble with his 'possible' boyfriend by asking a question that made it looked like Kiyo either told him something or let it slip. Grid decided he would just wait it out. Either they would tell him the truth eventually or he would meet this Evalyn chick and have his answer that way.
The next statement had him biting his lip to keep his mirth contained when his friend awkwardly explained that Evalyn would like them to sleep together and that they needed room to move around. A quick sideways glance told him that Kiyo was now a vivid shade of red.
Trying to look serious and thoughtful, Gris said. "Ah, so this girlfriend of yours tosses in her sleep. Good of you to be so thoughtful. I'm guessing your going to want a big tent then too, eh?â€
He looked at the first hasty choice that Kiyo made and shook his head. Luckily Eiryk seemed to agree with him. Gris considered the other blond's choice and then looked back at his pack mate. He didn't want to overwhelm Kiyo with a bunch of choices and advise. It was unlikely that the werewolf had never been camping before; he had personally seen him out in the woods at least once already. Therefore Kiyo did not really need their help at all but he was shy. In truth, they should probably just let the poor man alone and let him shop in peace.
Biting his lip again at the party-in-a-bag comment from their helpful new friend, Gris turned to Kiyo and raised his eyebrows. "Up to you. I would suggest getting a pad to put under the sleeping bags anyway to help deal with the uncomfortable rocks Eiryk mentioned.†Then he shrugged and moved over to look at a nice lime green down stuffed sleeping bag...unfortunately for one.
He let himself be distracted for a few moments. He'd ask Evan about it, but the more he thought about it the more he thought he'd like to try it. He did manage to squeak out, "You too," in response to Eiryk's pleasant introduction, although he was still sort of hiding behind Gris.
Eiryk showed him an absolutely huge sleeping bag that might be comfortable for Evan's long frame and Gris made a valiant attempt to save some of Kiyo's barely existent pride by 'assuming' Evalyn tossed in her sleep. Kiyo, unfortunately, was somewhat flustered and dropped the ball on the uptake.
"No, she kind of sleeps like the dead," he said, "if she's worn out enough anyway."
He realized what he'd said and how it sounded, and wondered if he could possibly crawl into one of these sleeping bags and hide until everyone was gone.
He tried to recover, nodding when Gris suggested a mattress pad. "Yeah that would probably be useful. I don't mind the rocks but she would."
Now he was just plain making stuff up, because the truth was absurd. Kiyo had absolutely no use for a mattress pad. Or a tent. Or even a super huge sleeping bag; he knew for a fact Evan had the things he would need. But now Kiyo felt sort of obligated to start buying things. Maybe someone else could use them.
"Just a thin one maybe, so it still feels like she's sleeping on the ground without the sharp rocks. She's little, and light."
Did he have enough money in his account to drop a few hundred on useless supplies for the sake of a lie? Yeah, probably. Kiyo sighed, sorry not to be able to tell the truth to at least Gris. Then again the truth might just hurt, since his friend expressed a desire to find someone himself.
However, he could absolutely not keep from grinning a slightly sly knowing smile when Kiyoshi said his girl slept well when worn out. It wasn't nice to laugh he reminded himself and managed to keep his mirth in check, but by the barest of margins.
Sleeping like the dead was not a clue or a give away or a signal of any kind. Eiryk had no reason at all to suspect that Kiyoshi was dating a vampire. He did, however, sympathize with the poor girl.
"You may want to get yourself a tarp or something to string up in front of the tent, something make some shade to keep the early morning sun out of her face. Let her wake up a bit easier."
That was something he and Alex were still working on, after all most modern tents were not light proof and while they might help screen some UV light out it was still possible to cause some problems for him.
"Certainly we can find something to fit the bill. I mean you don't want to take a down mattress topper out. Bringing the outdoors in is one thing bringing the indoors out is problematic. Next you'd been wanting a generator, air conditioning and wifi."
Eiryk said with a cheerful shrug that very clearly said he didn't understand modern camping. It was one thing when you were hauling essentially a small city for hundreds of miles and really were living- outdoors for days and weeks at a time.
As Kiyoshi had said he didn't mind the rocks Eiryk assumed he was at least somewhat of an experienced camper. So he must have some gear.
"What else is she likely to need? Solar shower? Chair?" His smile flashed again as it often did, "Carabiner?"
He raised his eyebrows but kept his silence as Kiyoshi explained that Evalyn was little and light. Now either his friend was trying desperately to dig himself out of the earlier hole by making up different features for an imaginary girlfriend or this Evalyn actually existed.
"Pfft,†Gris waved a hand at the tarp idea. "Get one if you like but its not going to keep enough sun out and the gradual change in light is a nice slow way to wake up. If you choose not to go out of the tent after that...†He just raised his shoulders and smiled.
Looking over at Eiryk, he tapped his chin thoughtfully. "A generator and a mobile wifi connection. I knew I was missing something on my last camping trip.†Gris smiled. "I was also missing my royal court, my traveling minstrels and my plush air conditioned carriage. One should have all the best when 'roughing' it.†Graysons were infamous for having only the best. Though perhaps the minstrels were overdoing it just a touch; an ipod with a nice speaker dock would serve well enough. Gris was amused with his own inner frugality.
Eiryk asked what else Kiyo would likely need and he turned to look at his friend. "Did you have any special plans for other things or was this a romantic get-away in nature?†Gris reached out and squeezed his pack mate's shoulder. "Its all right if that's the case. We can stop 'helping' if you like and let you shop in peace.â€
To prove his point, he turned to Eiryk and asked. "What do you have in the way of nice tents? If I am going to be camped out in this field waiting for my soul mate to drop from the sky then I should get comfortable. It is likely to be a long wait.â€
"I sleep just fine," he muttered, still not meeting anyone's eyes.
The suggestions just got more and more elaborate, and Kiyo knew he did not have the money for everything on the imaginary shopping list. Not only that but it was all truly unnecessary.
"She would actually enjoy the sun," Kiyo said, trying to overcome the embarrassment and behave normally.
It wasn't a lie... Evan would enjoy the sun, if he could. Kiyo continued to shake his head at suggestions, stopping to look up at Gris with wide eyes when Eiryk mentioned a generator and wifi and his Packmate agreed. Gris continue in the same vein though, and Kiyo couldn't help but wonder how serious he'd been.
He shook his head again though. "No, none of that," he said. "We're supposed to be getting away from all that, not taking it with us."
Gris asked about the nature of such a getaway and Kiyo said, "The second one," without blushing any harder, which was good, because he didn't think he could handle that.
"I think, um, I might just shop around a little bit," he said faintly. "Maybe I should get a better idea of whether she'd like doing this or not. Maybe she does want her wifi... she is kind of a techno-geek. Now I don't know!"
He twisted his hands together in worry. He didn't mind coming back later; really, he didn't want Gris to go and leave him with a stranger. It wasn't that Kiyo couldn't function, it was just so much easier with someone along that he trusted enough to hide behind when necessary. That and he liked Gris in spite of always feeling very small and grubby and unattractive when he was around. It wasn't Gris's fault that he had almost Evan-like presence.
He hung back a little, waiting to see if the discussion would turn toward tents. He could absorb information that way, and make a decision on something later. He hadn't really been planning for a tent but there might be a reason for one.
There was something to be said for getting a bit frisky in the great out doors though. Of course it would be messy as well. Deciding nothing was perfect but love, or lust, could overcome all he just grinned and let things go. Although, he made a note to talk to Alex about camping again. There had to be a way to do this.
Eiryk snapped his fingers and shook his head.
"Mistrals. I knew I was forgetting something last time."
Kiyoshi seemed to be a little over whelmed and Eiryk tried again to scale himself back. He didn't want to lose a sale for Alex. It was just so hard to contain himself sometimes.
"Maybe just a battery powered radio then."
He offered a small soft smile to the nice young man who was taking his girl on a romantic weekend.
"Why don't you think a bit while we look at some tents. And they are just over..."
Eiryk stumbled over something, it might have been the air, or his own feet or an infinitesimal irregularity in the flooring; the world would never know. Fortunately he managed not to face plant and avoided knocking anything over or hitting another customer. Righting himself Eiryk shook it off and moved on as if nothing had happened.
"here. I don't think any of them is certified to with stand the impact of a falling soul mate but you might want to invest in a three to four person just on general principle."
Kiyoshi said that he wanted to look around a little bit so Gris nodded, gave his friend a pat on the shoulder and moved away. Eiryk seemed willing to go along with him so now his pack mate could have some privacy to pick up whatever he wanted without feeling pressured by the opinions of others.
Following along behind the other blond, Gris watched Eiryk fall over nothing. The man had tripped when he entered the store earlier and nearly knocked over the carabiners and now he nearly fell again. Eiryk did not seem inebriated and Gris was certain that if the man were fall down drunk that he would be able to smell it. He did not see any signs of drug use either, at least none that were typical. He was no doctor but Eiryk appeared pretty lucid, his eyes were not dilated or bloodshot, there was no redness in his face so, for the moment, he ruled out illegal substances. "Are you okay? Do you have dizzy spells?†Gris gave him a concerned smile. "I know several very natural and easy remedies for it if that is a common problem.â€
He looked over at the variety of tents that were mostly boxed up on the shelf. There were a few opened and hanging above them for display purposes. Tents took up a lot of retail real estate so suspending them from the ceiling was a smart idea. "I can't imagine that falling bodies is something that many people have to concern themselves with.†Gris ran one hand along the tops of the boxes. "What would you do for that anyway? You don't want to be crushed but bouncing your soul mate off a steel reinforced tent seems like a harsh way to start the relationship. Or is that just me?â€
In the meantime, the man with the dark hair waited until Kiyoshi was slightly back behind the others and then came out from around the corner of the display. He smiled at Kiyo and handed him a slip of paper.
"From what you said it sounds like your camping trip is local, right? Nothing terribly involved, just a night or two in the great outdoors to get away from civilization for a bit?"
Kiyo nodded and took the piece of paper. There was a list on it. The dark-haired man continued. "These are a few things you might want to look into, so you an have a balance between comfortable and still outdoors."
"Thank you," Kiyo said with mild surprise. He hadn't realized the man had been paying such close attention; after all, he'd been talking with the guy with the cane for a bit.
"My pleasure," was the response. "Let me know if you need help finding any of them, or if you have any questions. I might be able to come up with another idea or three."
Kiyo smiled; the things on the list were a little more in line with what he sort of envisioned for his trip. Gris had been on the mark with the lantern but on the list there were several candle lanterns, which Kiyo thought might be better although the one his Packmate had had was also good. Instead of a tent there was a shelter on it, and some sort of rig with mosquito netting. That was something Kiyo hadn't considered; simply setting up a lean-to and protecting it from unpleasant bugs.
He quickly, happily, scanned the rest of the list. Then he tucked it into his pocket and trotted back over to Eiryk and Gris, who were still discussing the potential for Gris's future soul mate to drop out of the sky. Kiyo felt bad for having brought that up. Gris didn't seem to mind, but Kiyo thought if he were in Gris's place the constant reminder of being alone would be depressing.
"If they're skydiving, hopefully they have enough ability to steer clear of the tent," he pointed out. It probably wasn't helpful, but he didn't like the continual reminders for Gris and didn't quite know how to turn the conversation away from it.
He was a bit frustrated having nearly fallen over twice in the company of perfect strangers. Every now and then his natural 'grace' would irritate him. It never lasted too long. In this instance the fact that Greer was concerned enough and kind enough to ask, helped him get over the minor annoyance and he laughed.
"No dizzy spells or anything like that. I just have two left feet, possibly nine or ten really. As long as I'm not skipping through a china shop it isn't an issue.â€
Leaning back and considering Greer's dilemma Eiryk nodded sagely, and wobbled for a moment as his center of gravity shifted. He managed to hold on and remain solid and upright though. Perhaps he'd go out sailing or at least swimming this weekend, he tended to be a bit more coordinated in both situations.
"You might be right about that. Internal bleeding is not romantic at all.â€
Eiryk was absently playing match maker for Greer, the more they had chatted the more he'd narrowed his list down. The trick was Eiryk wasn't 100% sure which way Greer's preference's lay and he didn't want to offend by guessing wrong. So he really had two lists going. Maybe he should invite Greer and Kyioshi and Kyioshi's girl out with them some time.
Kyioshi rejoined them and had a brilliant suggestion. Eiryk's face just lit up.
"What you really need is a giant butterfly net isn't it?â€
Eiryk said that he did not experience dizziness but he had never heard of someone just being clumsy. There was always a reason for it. Teenagers could be clumsy while adjusting to growth spurts and anyone could appear clumsy if they were absent minded. Walking took a minimum of attention, you could even do other things such as talk or chew gum at the same time, however it still required at least a small amount of focus. Did the blond just not pay attention to where he was going? Gris figured he would watch and see.
"No, but then I could play white knight to the rescue.†He smiled. "That might help things along and perhaps they would be at my mercy. If they simply got up and walked away from the field I might never get the chance to make a connection.â€
Kiyoshi came over and suggested the hypothetical soul mate should be able to dodge the tent and therefore it shouldn't be a problem. Gris slid his arm around Kiyo's shoulder and smiled at his friend. "True enough, unless there is faulty mechanism or they knocked themselves on the side of the plane just as they jumped and were coming down unconscious.†Gris shook his head. "Or maybe they passed out from the sheer stupidity of jumping from a perfectly good airplane.†He would be the one passed out in fear but then no one would be getting him in a plane with the intent to jump out of it. Sitting on the ground watching someone else do it was interactive enough, thank you very much.
"Did you find some things that you wanted?†Gris smiled at his pack mate. "If you've decided. Do you want to go find some place to eat dinner? Then I can help you take everything home, if you want.â€
As his friend spoke, Kiyo quirked an eyebrow at him and his opinion of skydiving in general. "Maybe your soulmate won't be a skydiver," he said uncertainly.
He did nod when Gris asked if he had found things. "I want to get a few of the lanterns here, with the candles," he said. "I can put some of the ones I've made into them, I think Evalyn would like that. And Evan has some that you made he might like for when we go. I think I'm going to consider the rest of it, maybe I need to plan these trips out a little better and then do my shopping."
He would come back by himself and get what he needed, but for now he at least wanted to make a purchase since the dark-haired salesman was so helpful, and because Eiryk was doing his best in spite of not even being an employee here.
Kiyo perked up visibly at the mention of dinner. "Sushi?" he asked hopefully. It was one of the only things he could eat in a social setting without drawing unwanted attention, and a decent Japanese restaurant should have a variety of cooked and raw foods for all palates. He glanced at Eiryk, wondering if he would be joining them. He wondered what he had even come in for to begin with. Not that he wasn't welcome to join them; he just didn't seem to be in any hurry to get anything else done.
Chatting with Greer was pleasant. He had a sense of humor and didn't mind playing around with him. Some people just didn't get the joke/game. Far too many wanted to take life too seriously. And while Eiryk wasn't a grasshopper he wasn't an ant either, he believed in mixing work and play. He was getting indications that Greer felt the same.
A smile flitted across Eiryk's face and he laughed softly. He didn't understand sky diving either. Of course he wasn't a massive fan of flying, let alone jumping out of the plane. It wasn't a fear or a phobia it just wasn't his favorite.
Kiyoshi rejoined them and looked rather more grounded, more confident in what he was doing here. Eiryk suspected Alex would have had a chat with the young man. As these two seemed ready to disappear Eiryk decided it might be best to excuse himself more or less.
"There are several very good sushi places very close. Walking distance if that's your fancy. I'd be happy to recommend if you'd like."
Giving the pair some space he trotted up to the front of the store grabbed a card and trotted back. It let Greer and Kiyoshi know he didn't really intend to intrude on their dinner and gave them a few second's of space. After all they'd just met he wasn't so gauche as to invite himself along. He only stumbled once in the little run for the card. Coming back he pulled one of his own cards out of the inside pocket of his suit jacket.
"Here you go, a card for the store I hope to see you back, I'd love to hear how your girl enjoyed camping. The other is my card give me a call... for whatever. Maybe we can take a hike or something."
He'd liked both men well enough and wouldn't be sorry to know them better and had no issues putting that out there.
"But unless you need some more 'help' I need to see a man about an order... It really was lovely to meet you both."
Once it was appropriate Eiryk politely and efficiently excused himself but he didn't officially greet his partner until they were alone. After all making out during business hours wasn't professional, naughty and fun but not professional.
((OOC... Eiryk out pending response))
"I can leave the horse at home.†Gris told Eiryk when the other man stated that a knight needed a horse. He could be a light grey wolf instead. It was not entirely the same but good enough for these modern times. Gris tried to imagine what wolf barding would look like and came to the conclusion that au natural was the way to be.
He tried not to make a face at his pack mate's choice of food. It was likely that Kiyo was one of those that preferred his meals 'under cooked'. The sushi restaurants almost always had food that he could eat and if they found a nice one then they would both be happy.
"Did you have a specific one in mind?†It appeared that Eiryk was plenty willing to make suggestions about sushi places as well. Gris quirked a smile at the man and wondered if he made a living by being a walking talking salesman for various places around Nachton. It would be one of the strangest examples of viral advertising he had seen in a long time...definitely old school. It worked though; people were plenty willing to take the advice of a random stranger who appeared to have no stake in the decision, especially tourists who wanted a local's insight. Gris wondered whether he could create a business of walking advertisers but figured it would take a long time for such a thing to catch on. Ah well, back to practicing law.
They talked amongst themselves about a place to go while Eiryk went to the counter and came back. He handed them two cards, one for the store and one of his own. The second one declared that he was an interior designer. That was handy. He needed one of those. Gris was not sure about taking a man prone to falling on a hike but he might call him about an apartment full of boxes.
The two werewolves made their way out of the store and down to some place called the Sushi Deli. Gris had his doubts but Kiyoshi swore that it was excellent despite its odd name. It turned out that Kiyo was very right. They both ate and chatted until they were stuffed. At least he was stuffed; Gris was beginning to wonder whether Kiyoshi had a hollow leg or perhaps three.
