Self Pity, Anyone?
Wren sat with her body wedged into the corner of the couch that was serving as her bed. Her heels were tucked so close to her butt that she was almost sitting on them, her right hand held a spoon and her left was curled posessively around a carton of chunky Monkey icecream. She had come straight home, Drev had still been asleep, and taken off her prim skirt and jacket in exchange for yoga pants and a sappy movie marathon on Lifetime.
She sniffled at Renee Zelweiger told Tom Cruise to shut up, when Drev padded softly into the room.
"You're out of ice cream." She sniffled and put a spoon full of chocolate vanilla and banana into her mouth. "I'll buy you more when I go back out." She spoke around her mouthful, her voice watery and sniffled again.
"Devil's Rejects!" he said brightly. As she settled herself on the couch, he flipped to the right channel and got the movie going. These "on-demand" services the cable companies did now were pretty sweet; couple bucks for a movie you can watch over and over, pause, and the like, and you don't have to return anything. Not too shabby, the technological advances of today's age.
"That cool with you?"
She dug her hand in the bowl of popcorn as the movie began on the screen. A loud sudden shoot out made her popcorn fly through the air. She looked up again to catch the opening credits, in between picking up popcorn kernels. "Rob Zombie? Really? If I have nightmares, you are so washing my sheets after I cold sweat all over them and holding my hair as I blow chunks at four A.M."
"I don't have a problem throwing your sheets in the wash, but I won't be holding up your hair. You can borrow a string or ribbon or something, but that's about it." He gave her a playful shove as Sherrif Wydel and his troops tossed tear gas into the Firefly house and followed with gas masks and guns at the ready.
"I should ask you to explain what's happening, but that might ruin the suspense."
"The rest I think you can pick up as the movie goes on.
"Though we should really be watching 'House' first," he added as Otis and Baby emerged from the storm sewer. "But that movie would probably
give your nightmares nightmares."
Her fingers brushed his as they both reached into the popcorn bowl. Wren gave his fingers a playful push with her own. Grinning she popped the fluffy goodness into her mouth.
"Um yeah I think we can avoid the house movie, thanks."
playfully.
"Are you getting fresh with me?"
"Why, Mr. Drev, I would never assume to tarnish your virtue, by placing my hand knowingly upon your's. Please do pardon my intrusion of your personal space."
She plucked a few kernels from the bowl and tossed them at him, hitting him in the chest. Her eyes however swung back to the television and the captain's dream.
enough to drop the popcorn kernels down her shirt.
Reaching a hand down her shirt she brushed at it and managed to get most of it, but there were a few stubborn pieces that she couldn't get and she wasn't about to sit here with her hand down her shirt. She stuck her tongue out at Drev, and turned so that her back was to him.
With a quick motion she tugged off her t-shirt so that it would be inside out and picked the popcorn pieces of of it. She turned it right side out and slipped her shirt back on. She turned back to Drev and punched him in the arm.
"I can't believe you did that!" She punched him again for good measure and turned back to the movie, her arms crossed beneath her breasts as she forced down the laughter bubbling in her chest.
Just then, Wren turned back around and socked him in the arm. He couldn't help but laugh.
"Well, you weren't getting fresh with me, so what was I supposed to do?!"
She put her hand in the popcorn bowl, threw another kernel at Drev, then put a few in her mouth. Suppressing her giggle, she tilted her head and stared at the screen.
Popcorn forgotten she watched the girl run out into the street. She screamed and jumped from the couch, the bowl of popcorn went flying and Wren found herself huddled in the circle of Drev's arms her head buried in his shoulder. Her body shook and her heart felt like it was going to jump out of her throat. She had no idea getting hit by a truck looked like that.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly, giving her a squeeze.
"Sorry about that." She looked up into his icy blue eyes and tried for a watery smile.
Trying not to let go of the shaken and shaking girl, Drev reached over, found the remote, and stopped the movie. When he looked back at her, the fear he saw in her eyes made him immediately regret choosing that movie. "Will you be okay?" he asked, and pulled the bottom of his shirt up to wipe the tears from her cheeks. He would have gotten a tissue for her, but he didn't want to let go of her just yet.
Wren sighed at that bitchy little voice, why was it the rational voice in her head had to be the bitchy one? Why couldn't it be sweet and firmly controlling, not raving psycho bitch? It was like her inner dialogue was out to piss her off and in order to deny it just for spite, force her to do something she didn't want to do. Man, you gotta love war raging inside your own damned head.
She decided ignoring psycho bitch from hell was the best course of action and settled her head on Drev's shoulder. Her body still shook with the lingering fear and shock but she felt a little bit better.
"How is it that a movie can do that to a person?"
"Some people just have a morbid obsession with being scared shitless.Others, who maybe aren't scared so easily, feel like they need to find something that will scare them." He gave her another squeeze, and had to force certain thoughts away.
"We can find something else to watch, or... do something else."
"I didn't mean anything by it, I didn't mean anything by it, I didn't meanything by it...."
"We should find something sappy like Sixteen Candles or Blind Date." Her teeth chattered between words and she pulled her feet up closer to her body and pressed into the warmth of Drev's. 'Yeah no more scary or horror movies for me...ever.'
"Or we could play a board game or cards or something if you have them. Or I could go put clothes on and we could go see a movie or play video games somewhere something"
She nearly bit her tongue while she spoke, as her teeth didn't want to stop clacking together. And the idea of leaving the house made her want to hide and take back the offer. She wrapped her arms around her stomach, trying to stop her ab muscles from shivering quite so hard.
