Commonalities
The directions were given well, and Fallon had no trouble finding the quaint home in a short amount of time.
Parking in front of the home, being that there was a car already parked in front of the garage, Fallon moved towards the front door just a little bit apprehensive. Even though she was with Aishe, and loved, and trusted the woman like the sister she really was beginning to see her as, the whole thing about seeing Kem again made Fallon nervous.
She had only been around Kem once, at the Ger Kogji house warming, and Aishe's boyfriend had been exceedingly friendly to Fallon then. Yet understandable or not, she still felt the slightest bit intimidated.
"Mmmm...the ocean breeze smells almost as good as the smell of pine we get at Ger Kogji...this is a beautiful place Aishe."
The heels of her shoes clicked on the slate walkway, almost sounding obscene in the quiet of the night. Fallon tried to walk more softly, but felt better once she'd reached the door.
"I see Kem has something else in common with Cyrus." Fallon giggled as the door opened, even before Aishe could take hold of the knob. "He does that to me all the time...I used to find it kind of spooky, but I'm used to it now."
Following Aishe into the house, Fallon was startled by the sound of hissing, and looked down to see a beautiful yellowish cat, who apparently wasn't fond of strangers. She stooped down and held her hand out, hoping the cat would accept her offer of friendship, and backed up the physical offering with soft words.
"Hello there...and aren't you the pretty one. Please don't be concerned about me...I'm really very nice...honest."
Fallon looked up to Aishe, and wondered if she would receive a formal introduction. At least the cat hadn't darted away in fear, which was a good sign. The cat also wasn't white, which would have been somewhat offputting.
(permission to see door open on it's own provided by Kem ;))
Knowing she wasn't the type of woman that a real mother was made of was something Fallon had known and accepted for years. This was another reason why Cyrus' gift of the fuzzy babies had been so perfect, and just another number on her long list of why she loved him so much.
Picking up a different magazine, Fallon skimmed the pages looking for flowers. Her ears remained glued to Aishe and Ana's discussion of Joey, but she was bowing out from any further participation on that subject for the time being. It seemed to her that she had pressed her feelings too far already, and needed to back off until she learned more about the man. And until that time came, she would hope that he was everything Ana said and hoped he was. It was Ana's turn for happiness, and Fallon hoped she would see it for her friend very soon.
The very idea of asking Joey exactly why he seemed to ditch her for one tenth of every month since they started dating seemed like the most logical way to go about divining the reason. "He shouldn't react too badly to it, depending on the reason, right?" She affected a somewhat innocent tone as she questioned the air, "Honey? Do these jeans make my ass look fat? Honey? Why do you still need a stash of porn? Honey? Does the reason you disappear for three days out of the month include being a werewolf?" She snorted, her shoulders tensing and shaking as she giggled. "I really don't think I'd be able to keep that line of questioning very serious, considering how simply ludicrous my examples are."
"Ask him the werewolf one," she suggested upon returning. "I like that one the best. Maybe some little mischievous imp inside me wants to poke fun of the supernatural, since technically I belong to it. But think of it... if he is a vampire after all, then maybe if you bring up the possibility of his being something other than human, it'll encourage him to 'fess up."
Handing the menu to Ana, Aishe chuckled. "Get him a box of milk bones and pretend you're checking out his reaction."
Glancing at the now-silent Fallon, Aishe wondered what the reasoning was for this particular silence. Fallon had been a little hesitant to voice her concerns though; maybe she was just holding off. Changing the topic, then she nodded at the menu.
"That's the best place in town. And I do have ice cream. Plenty of it. I'm determined to enjoy my newfound ability to eat nothing but hot fudge sundaes without gaining."
"Vanilla? No, dear Ana, you're much more...cherry vanilla."Â?
Fallon nodded, as she made her observation. Having actually sipped from her friend, as well as being presented with recent news of Ana's physical stature, and knowing the librarian to be a lot more than basic or ordinary, vanilla just didn't do Ana justice. However, by adding cherry...Fallon covered her mouth as she giggled
Giggles turned into full-blown laughter as Fallon pictured Ana asking Joey such silly things. And her laughter grew as she wondered how Cyrus would have responded if she'd asked him about the size of her ass. Of course that would never happen. Fallon wasn't touchy about most things, but she felt her rear assets were slightly larger than she really would have liked. For now Cyrus had never remarked on it, so Fallon felt no need to press the matter. She was glad Ana was only teasing.
Smirking at Aishe, Fallon just shook her head at the idea that Joey, or anyone else could be a werewolf. That is unless he was a vampire first, as she and Cyrus were, and they also had the ability to shape shift. Having ruled that option out, Fallon gave no credence to the werewolf topic.
"Milk bones? That's priceless!"Â? And soft giggles continued.
When ice cream was mentioned, Fallon decided that sounded pretty good to her. Not one to ever eat much human food, occasionally Fallon would find herself craving something, and tonight the mention of ice cream sounded wonderful.
"Have any...cherry vanilla?"Â? She asked with a straight face, wondering if her small joke would be lost on everyone else.
"Oh look! These roses, and tulips are beautiful, though tulips probably won't be around come June. Ana...are you allergic to any flowers?"Â?
Seeing a beautiful arrangement of very colorful flowers on the next page she turned to, brought Fallon's train of thought back to her wedding, if only for a few minutes.
But of course Ana was sitting in a living room, with two living - unliving? - vampires. Could it really be...?
Aishe's claim about eating nothing but fudge sundaes made her a bit jealous. "Must be nice, having a homeostatic body," she said with a wink, "but I think if I had the option to eat whatever I wanted, it would be a truckload of shellfish followed by about a ton of hot dogs with all the different mustards I could handle."
Affectionately rolling her eyes at Fallon for her repeated crack about "cherry vanilla" she shook her head at the flowers question. "No. Roses make me sneeze, but only if I bury my nose in one. But I could carry a bouquet and it shouldn't bother me."
Ana perused the menu handed her by Aishe. Looking up at her exotic friend she requested, "Any suggestions, Aishe? I'm in the mood for pizza, but I'd be willing to try something new as long as it didn't have mustard or shellfish."
She gave Ana a wide grin at the mention of being able to eat whatever she wanted, and did her best to look appropriately horrified at Ana's choice of fare. "Shellfish? Over chocolate?" She shook her head sadly. "No accounting for taste."
Peering over at the picture Fallon held for them to see, Aishe disagreed there as well... "That's what greenhouses are for, silly," she said with a smile. "If you want tulips in June, they'll make sure you have tulips! And those are pretty. What about an iris or two for some extra color, as well?"
Figuring the mustard-and-shellfish pizza was out, Aishe's only suggestion to Ana was for dessert. With a somewhat sheepish expression, she admitted, "I've only actually sampled. It all smells delicious, but I went straight for dessert every time."
She poked her finger at the appropriate part of the menu though. "They have great cannolis. The chocolate ones."
One of these days she hoped she would remember that money really could make things easier. Though she would never be the kind of person to spend indiscriminately, Cyrus was always telling her not to worry about such things. Perhaps in special cases...like one's own wedding...a little splurging would be fine.
"Then tulips and roses I think, with some irises or baby's breath thrown in for contrast. Since each of those flowers come in most colors, maybe I can get you both bouquets to match your dresses..." Imagining such a thing, Fallon's eyes took on a far away look for a few moments, but then returned to her friends.
"Now I'm more excited about having a really colorful wedding, instead of the classical red and white. I'm beginning to think having a sort of rainbow theme will be more festive. But you two need to keep an eye on me, and not let me get things too...garish. I need to let Suki in on everything as well, since she's the one with all the contacts, and will undoubtedly be the one to make most of the arrangements, once I make the decisions...er...we make the decisions."
Though they both kept telling her it was her wedding, and she was the one to choose what she wanted, for Fallon it seemed more special having feedback from both of her dearest friends. She wanted everyone to participate in the wedding, along with her and Cyrus. She didn't want a hall full of spectators.
"Mmmmm, cannolis...I don't think I've ever had one of those, though I have heard of them, and they sound yummy."
As was usually the case, food really wasn't of much interest to Fallon, except for the rare times when something spoke to her. Right now something sweet sounded pretty good.
Ana shook her head slowly at first, then a bit more fervently, then slowly again. "My first instinct would be to talk you out of a rainbow motif, because I imagine that would be the type of theme expected in a same-sex union. But it is quite obvious the intendeds are not similar in that way, so I think it would actually make a great theme."
Ana put a finger on her chin as she leaned towards Fallon to read the menu. "Think of a cannoli as an eclair, with a crunchy instead of doughy container. I'd almost say it would be like a taco-style eclair, but that's more likely to turn you off than make you try it. And you should definately try it."
She pointed out her choices on the menu. "Mozzarella sticks, bacon cheeseburger, and a cannoli. My treat."
She flashed Fallon a quick little grin. "You'll love them."
She fell silent for a few moments, pondering Fallon's requirements for her wedding and considering the idea of avoiding garishness.
"What if we went with basic white, and added splashes of color throughout? White for your gown, white roses, but with something bright thrown in, like irises for purple, lilies maybe for yellow or pink, and even some red?"
Nibbling a bit at her nail, Aishe pointed out a few different flowers from the pages of Fallon's magazine. "See here?" She showed Fallon with her hands as she explained. "You could have ribbons in white, accented with small bouquets of wildflowers, perhaps? And even for your own bouquet, something white with dots of color, like these alstroe, or the genestra."
Pausing for a moment to sit back, she raised her eyebrows at looked at Fallon, waiting for her opinion, glancing at Ana for the same.
“I think I know what you mean…for a long time I never thought I would ever experience freedom again. After a while, I thought I had gotten used to my life, and had given up on such thoughts. But the moment I got the opportunity, all my desires came flooding forward, and I jumped. But then while there was risk involved, I had a chance to experience my desires.”
Frowning at her dear friend, Fallon briefly caressed the side of Ana’s face with her index finger.
“You don’t really have the options though…for you it would most certainly be an unhappy outcome.”
Fortunately, Ana had a lot of other choices to take instead of those that would cause her to suffer. In Fallon’s scenario things were quite different.
Having no desire whatsoever to dwell on unhappy things, Fallon stopped. Ana’s turning the subject to ‘rainbows’, and ‘same-sex’ marriages gave her pause, but only for a few seconds. Then she just grinned, and listened with a bit of amazement, as Ana brought the main idea of her comment around.
“No…there is no way anyone would look at Cyrus and think…feminine.” Her eyes crinkled in amusement, and then reverted back to slight confusion.
While she may have never eaten cannolis, she was sure she had seen pictures in cook books, and perhaps even in bakeries. None of those images reminded her of tacos at all.
She also bristled a little when Ana offered to pay for the food. Though Fallon knew her librarian friend was far from destitute, it bothered her to think anyone should pay besides Fallon, under the circumstances. Not only was Cyrus marvelously well off, but this get together had been Fallon’s idea after all. She kept her tongue and thoughts on the matter still. For tonight she felt she had used pretty much all of her assertive abilities allotted. It was getting easier, but she could still only push herself so far.
“I think that would be lovely.” Her eyes lit on the pages Aishe pointed to, and she had to agree a little color could go a long way.
“Alright then…how about we do this? You and Ana choose the colors you want for your dresses, and then I’ll make those the two central colors, with white, and maybe one other contrasting color thrown in? I’ve heard that things go better in threes…”
[i]If they could pin down at least that much tonight, Fallon would have a vast space to work with.
Cocking her head for a moment as she tried to remember the flowers that Aishe referred to, she shrugged as the knowledge escaped her. "They're both pretty, but I think the genestra reminds me more of Baby's Breath, and would work better as a filler as opposed to a main presentation."
It was basically the opposite of Fallon's idea but in Aishe's opinion as the bridesmaids, they were much like the flowers in Fallon's bouquet... they were merely there to adorn the bride.
Nodding her chin to Ana's Italian menu she asked, "Mozzerella sticks, bacon cheeseburger, three cannolis... you all set? I'll call it in."
She held out her hand for the menu so she could get the number, whle reaching for he phone with the other.
Though she loved parties, and much of the planning, after the last one she and Cyrus had at Ger Kogji, she had practically promised him she would rely more on help for future endeavors. Yet she didn’t want to just turn the affair over to total strangers, who knew nothing about her or Cyrus. Fortunately, because of who Suki was, Fallon expected that she would not only help with a lot of the actual ordering, but that she would tell Fallon what she needed to hear.
How did she convince Ana and Aishe to do the same?
At least Aishe’s suggestion was one that might take them a little farther in the planning.
“Well, I want white flowers, and not one of those bouquets that look like they were constructed with calipers…you know the perfectly round ones? I think a loose, and somewhat free flowing handful of flowers…white roses, maybe some coral alstroemeria, and some lemon blossoms, or stephanotis for filler? One nice thing about the alstroemeria is that it comes in so many colors.”
Fallon continued to flip through the magazine, focusing on the flowers, and arrangements now, until she found a page of inspiration.
“Ohhhh…that would be so pretty, especially since it will be a night wedding. I wonder if Cyrus could deal with them?”
The page Fallon now held up showed simple attendant bouquets, with narrow glass flutes in the center, and candles in the centers of those. The ad said the arrangements could then become part of the bridal table arrangement after the wedding, and each attendant could retain the crystal holder afterward, as a memento.
“Think either of you would want such a reminder of the night?”
She smiled at Fallon's musing. When the page was turned to her to view, her eyes widened. "Oh, that's lovely! I think that would be simply awesome. Though I wouldn't need a crystal trinket as a memory kicker," she nudged her teacher friend, "I would be proud and happy and humbled to find a spot on my shelf for it."
She snickered to herself as a strange vampire stereotype popped up in her head. "I'm pretty sure you guys can see yourselves in the mirror, right?" She asked, referring to vampires very broadly as "you guys". "Then pictures shouldn't be a problem, either."
