Check/Checkmate
Perhaps it should have struck Reign as odd that her neighbors were just as, if not more, nocturnal than she was. But it didn't. In fact she didn't even think about it that much. She'd wanted to take Sirius out for a run, well he'd run she wouldn't, and a romp after a day spent hunched over books and a computer. It was late(ish) well after dark but she didn't think twice about calling Aishe and asking if the smaller woman wanted to join her.
Ordinarily Reign wouldn't have bothered with company, but she was still a bit unsettled by both the break in and the wolf. She wasn't a fool and didn't think Aishe would be able to fend off either human or werewolf attackers but she did think there was some safety in numbers and if worst came to worst one of the two of them could run for help.
Just as Lake Michigan did back home, the ocean drew her to it. Besides, as she told Aishe, the beach would give Sirius lots of room to run. Reign had, after all, brought a Frisbee and figured the mutt would have fun chasing it, hell he was already excited.
But there was a bit of a walk to the beach. There was the short way and the long way. Ordinarily Reign was all for the short way, especially with Sirius tugging at his leash, but the short way seemed to go through some chess tables and one was occupied. More to the point Reign knew who was sitting there and so she, without thinking about it, started to lean the long way just assuming Aishe would follow her. It was just a nice winding little path after all and not barbed wire and land mines.
Reign Aishe and the dog all seemed to gravitate to the water and for a moment Pak allowed herself to reminisce about her home in Siam and being near that ocean, during the day when the sun hadn't been her enemy. She stopped those thoughts before she got too serious though. They had a way of brining her down and she didn't want that. Instead, she took off her shoes and watched the dog try to tackle Aishe
Reign earned a smirk for her wise ass comment.
"I -never- cheat at -any- game."Â?
She was paying close attention to the workings of a Frisbee. It wasn't as if she'd never played with one before, but it had been a while and she was out of practice to say the least.
Distracting though the sound of the waves was, Reign and Pak's voices were carried to her on the wind, and with better-than-human hearing Aishe caught what they'd said.
"Pak? Cheat?" Aishe laughed. "Only if there's something in it for her! I'm not sure a large wet dog in the face would qualify."
Sure that was going to earn her trouble later, she offered Pak a brilliant, innocent smile.
She had to wonder what kind of relationship she and Aishe had that Aishe both knew Pakpao that well and didn’t mind calling her on it. It was rather fascinating. From the sounds of it, she and Kem were even closer. For a second it crossed Reign’s mind to wonder if either of the two had served as a midnight snack.
“Oh there’s something in this for her. Guilt, the possibility of retaliation. I’ve never figured out how her mind works but there’s something.”
After getting two wet sandy paws planted firmly on her chest Reign managed wrestle the Frisbee away from her dog. That done she tossed the Frisbee to Pakpao. It was a good toss, an easy one, but Reign had failed to catch hold of Sirius who was off like a shot.
“Incoming!”
Pak rolled her eyes at the other two feeling slightly out of place. It wasn’t that she was in a bad spot, she was just feeling more sedate tonight, not necessarily up to her usual ‘set em up knock em down’ best. But she was going to try. This was the most relaxed she’d seen Reign in ages. Apparently, Aishe was good for every one.
“And this is why you’re no good at chess. You’re brain only sees one opportunity.”
She goaded Reign.
Apparently goading was a bad idea as she was going to get a massive canine in the face for her efforts. Pak watched with trepidation as the Shepard charged at her and the Frisbee floated toward her. Not wanting to face plant in the sand she used a bit of telekinesis to guide the disk to her with out having to run for miles. Grabbing it, she immediately tossed it to Aishe. The throw was rushed and a bit off balance but it wasn’t bad.
After that she tossed it once more out into the open so Sirius could play too, leaving it up to him as to who to bring it to.
Not even out of breath (amazing how much easier excersize gets when one doesn't need to breathe), she called to Reign, "Yeah but ask Pak - revenge is a dish best served cold. She'll let you get complacent before she strikes."
Then glancing over at Pak she said, "Or am I giving away all your secrets?"
Tonight Nikhila had followed Reign, for a bit, just to see what she was up to and who was around her. Thankfully, she and her neighbor had gone to the nature reserve giving a large white wolf more places to hide. As they had the dog with them, she had to be extra careful to stay down wind as well as out of sight. But she wasn’t an inexperienced hunter and certainly not a puppy so it wasn’t terribly difficult.
As the trio headed down to the beach, she came out of hiding and sniffed around the chess table quite thoroughly. There was something familiar about Reign’s scent, not surprising she was Regan’s oldest. The dog, which she had been told was called Sirius, was defiantly a healthy critter. The other two she didn’t know, but the clove cigarettes were quite strong. It shouldn’t be hard to follow that one if they had to.
She trotted down to the beach and lay down in the tall grass. It provided her with a clear view and excellent coverage while the ocean breeze brought all the smells to her and ensured she wouldn’t attract the dog’s attention. Her ears swiveled as she picked up their voices and bits of what they were saying. It sounded like they were having fun.
More relevant to her though she hadn’t seen, heard or smelled anything out of the ordinary. Satisfied she stood back up and headed into the trees. It was a perfect night out and she might as well go for a run.
((OOC… out))
“There is nothing wrong with single minded determination on occasion.”
Reign shot back.
She had to keep from laughing as Sirius cantered to Pakpao with his prize. That was too funny. Reign knew the vampire didn’t even own a cat let alone a dog and would probably be a bit perplexed what do and none too thrilled with the slobber.
As she was not laughing she happened to catch a shadow, some movement, behind Pakpao. She couldn’t see what it was, but as it was leaving she decided not to worry. Probably just a stray dog.
“I’d tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”
It was a classic line and a wonderful old stand by. Pak quoted it with feeling and narrowed her eyes menacingly at Aishe.
“You on the other hand I might just hound until your dying day and lets face it neither of us wants that.”
She threatened Reign. It actually wasn’t much of a thread more of a promise, but still.
Pak caught Reign looking at something behind her, but the blonde’s attention didn’t stay there long so she didn’t bother to look. It couldn’t have been that big a deal. Besides, she now had a large wet dog sitting at her feet expecting her to do something.
Raising an eyebrow at the mongrel she reached down to take the disk, pulling back in surprise.
“Ew!”
OK that was an act of war. Still she had slogged through the sewers of Nachton bare foot she could handle a little dog drool. Quickly she took the Frisbee from Sirius, who had the good sense not to try and fight her, and tossed it to Aishe.
“Its slimy.”
She noted after throwing it.
Getting the frisbee good and wet she lifted it, dripping, from the surf, and hurled it towards Reign, spraying salty droplets out in a circle the entire way.
It was right about then she decided Pak needed to get wet at some point tonight.
Dashing after the Frisbee Reign caught it, got a face full of salt water for her trouble as well as getting to make a bit of a dive. The dive turned into a roll and she was on her feet before Sirius could trample her. She’d had experience with that and didn’t care to repeat it.
Keeping their round robin going Reign threw the Pakpao.
“Or you could suck it up and wipe your hands on your pants like the rest of us.”
That made her sinker. Pakpao had on a very nice pair of khakis. In fact, she was clearly the best dressed of the three of them. Not that she or Aishe was sloppy, just more casual.
She was tempted to simply bat the Frisbee away, hands free, but she was pretending to be normal. Although, for whose sake she was keeping her identity under wraps was beyond her. Maybe she didn’t want to admit to Aishe she’d taken a human, any human, into her confidence maybe she was trying to protect Reign from knowing there were other vampires in the world. And of course, she was trying to protect the clan from having a random human running around with that information. Also Kem and Aishe, they were family and she wouldn’t endanger them for anything. She couldn’t tell, she didn’t really care either. All in all, it was a great deal of responsibility, so she’d be keeping her mouth shut. Instead she used her skills to guide the slightly off kilter throw to her so she didn’t have to move much to catch it.
“You lot have fun with the sand and surf. I’ll leave the washing off to the both of you and if I slime winds up on my pants I’ll send you the bill.”
Yeah do her own laundry, that was funny. She’d made good friends with dry cleaner in the past and would do so in the future. Pak did actually have a washer drier in her rooms, she just didn’t use them often. Some how she always managed to be too busy to take care of things herself.
Of course Aishe was splashing around to rival Sirius, and getting wet had not stopped at her feet. In fact even though she'd stayed in knee-high water, the surging of the waves had wet her to mid-thigh, soaking her cotton cargoes to that point. She didn't mind; she and Kem didn't live too far away.
She clapped her hands, grin on her face, and held out her arms for Pak to throw her the frisbee. Then, glancing at reign she said, "Will Sirius swim? Because if I get in any deeper he's going to have to, if he wants that tackle!"
She out right laughed at the idea of Pakpao getting even her feet wet.
“Yeah he’ll swim. If I didn’t know better I’d say he was part retriever, he loves the water.”
As if to demonstrate this point a large wave carried Sirius for a foot or two, however, the big dog had more than a little experience with waves and body surfing and rode it out like a champ before deciding to bound to Pakpao who currently had the Frisbee.
Not that Pak was at all temperature sensitive, no not at all.
She tossed the Frisbee, a little off kilter, to Aishe and didn’t bother to correct the flight path. She edged toward water though, a bit suspiciously as if the ocean might reach out and grab her. And it might, she’d lived near and watched the ocean most of her life and had a healthy respect for it and what it could do.
Still she did get just to the edge of the wet sand, the waves just barley licked the tip of her toes, but that was quite close enough for her.
She caught the frisbee as Pak ventuerd closer to the water, then flung it once more to get Sirius out of the way. What she was about to do might leave her wishing she'd really died.
As usual Aishe had been in touch with Kem on and off all night. She hadn't exactly been talked into her course of action, but she would be lying if she claimed he had nothing to do with it.
"It's not so bad, is it?" She nodded to Pak as her friend went so far as to get her shins wet, a sour look on her face.
Then without warning Aishe dropped into a crouch, swung her foot out and caught Pak's ankles, sweeping them out from beneath her. Cat-quick she rose back up, flung an arm out to completely unbalance Pak, and turned back to catch her head with her free hand so Pak didn't hit it on anything as she fell.
Siamese curses sounded very similar when dunked in salt water, she decided. Bending over, ostensibly to offer Pak her hand and help her up, Aishe used their closeness to whisper so Reign couldn't hear.
"Kem says to tell you revenge is a dish best served VERY cold."
She was aware that she, too, would be on Pak's "revenge" list, but perhaps if she blamed it heavily on Kem he'd catch the brunt of it. It was worth it to know, somewhere beneath the ground floor of Meridian, there was a vampire clutching his sides in hysterical laughter as his few co-workers looked on in complete puzzlement.
((ooc: Kem's intereference with, uh, my permission.))
Pak just chuffed at Aishe’s question, she had actually started to back up and leave the water and was totally unprepared for the baby vampire’s movements. The sand was wet and the water… well it was more wet and defiantly salty. Pak managed to swallow a healthy amount of it while cursing Aishe.
As profanity went, it was extraordinarily creative while being nasty enough to make a sailor blush and loud enough for people several miles away to hear
The wave passed and eyes stinging, coughing and gasping Pak, for some unknown reason, actually accepted Aishe’s help half expecting to be let go and fall back in the water. On her feet, again Pak slowly and deliberately wiped water out of her eyes and flipped massive amounts of black hair out of her face. Stalking back up to dry land, while continuing to swear Pak flopped down in the sand. Thank god, she didn’t need to breath and wouldn’t be catching hypothermia.
It didn’t surprise her at all that Kem was involved and she sent to him,
[I’m not going to say it, because you know.]
And that was all. He would be paying, as would Aishe who was not totally innocent in this, and there was no way Kem could not know that. In fact, Aishe had to know that from the looks of her.
Her unusual blue eyes took on a light some where between evil and mischievous.
“You will be paying.”
It was about that time that she heard Reign finally collapse into giggles. Pak simply added her as one more person to ‘the list’.
Reign had only heard Pakpao use that particular language, whatever it might be once before, and it was when her sponsor was in a rage such as even Reign (who both had Bastian and herself to compare it too) had ever seen before. For a second she was down right afraid the vampire might be drown and ran several steps in that direction, before realizing that vampires probably couldn’t drown. Even Sirius seemed to realize something serious was going on as he trotted around her.
As Aishe helped Pakpao up and the Asian woman stalked up to, a dry patch of sand Reign continued to hold her breath. She didn’t know what she was waiting for, maybe for Pakpao to take a bite out of Aishe and for Pakpao to ask her to help hide the body.
When the vampire uttered four little words Reign gave up and started laughing. She couldn’t stop. She collapsed on to the sand letting the waves hit her. She might not totally understand the vampire but she knew her well enough to know that was acceptance and there would be no dramatic retaliation. Well there would just not tonight and nothing serious whatever came would be in good fun.
Frisbee still in hand she just kept laughing not noticing the waves. Sirius grew impatient and took the Frisbee from Reign and took it to Pakpao, which only made Reign laugh harder.
Kem couldn't believe Aishe had actually done it. He'd suggested it jokingly. Well... half-jokingly. She'd been remarkably amenable to it though.
[Bring it on.]
He had a few more tricks up his sleeve that had yet to played upon her.
((ooc: Kem in and out))
Well mostly. As human as Aishe was, and she considered herself quite human in the philosophical sense if not the biological. Aishe's giggles came softly as Pak threatened her, and she realized that it was kind of fun to be in on the joking herself. She hadn't realized she'd felt slightly left out or if shehad, she hadn't really acknowledged it. The fact that Pak had let her get away with it and didn't seem bothered made her feel a bit more like family and that pleased her.
"I can take it. Kem's got my back."
With a nerf squirtgun, maybe.
Where the Wicked Witch of the West came from she didn’t know but it did seem appropriate. But Aishe made a valid point, this was going to be much tricker with two of them involved. Pak was more than up to the challenge, even if she had to get MARI to lock one of them in an elevator to make it work.
It was about that time, lost in thoughts of retaliation, that the big Sheppard half pounced on Pak and knocked her flat on her back. The dog was the one person not on the list, Pak reflected, as she involuntarily took in the night sky. Wrestling the dog she managed to sit back up and toss the disk to Aishe, or Reign, well away if nothing else. As Sirius barked happily and ran after it, she caught Reign’s eye.
“And don’t think you’re off the hook either.”
