Check/Checkmate
Perhaps it should have struck Reign as odd that her neighbors were just as, if not more, nocturnal than she was. But it didn't. In fact she didn't even think about it that much. She'd wanted to take Sirius out for a run, well he'd run she wouldn't, and a romp after a day spent hunched over books and a computer. It was late(ish) well after dark but she didn't think twice about calling Aishe and asking if the smaller woman wanted to join her.
Ordinarily Reign wouldn't have bothered with company, but she was still a bit unsettled by both the break in and the wolf. She wasn't a fool and didn't think Aishe would be able to fend off either human or werewolf attackers but she did think there was some safety in numbers and if worst came to worst one of the two of them could run for help.
Just as Lake Michigan did back home, the ocean drew her to it. Besides, as she told Aishe, the beach would give Sirius lots of room to run. Reign had, after all, brought a Frisbee and figured the mutt would have fun chasing it, hell he was already excited.
But there was a bit of a walk to the beach. There was the short way and the long way. Ordinarily Reign was all for the short way, especially with Sirius tugging at his leash, but the short way seemed to go through some chess tables and one was occupied. More to the point Reign knew who was sitting there and so she, without thinking about it, started to lean the long way just assuming Aishe would follow her. It was just a nice winding little path after all and not barbed wire and land mines.
"Up until just now you could have fooled me."Â?
It really was remarkable the humanizing effect this whole situation had for Reign. Pakpao had gone from being a slightly quirky rich woman willing to sponsor her for shits and giggles to an extremely quirky yet dangerous predator and now she was back to being an extraordinarily quirky woman who happened to be a vampire in her spare time.
OK not quite but Reign wasn't afraid of the 'threat'. If Aishe and her fella could take what Pakpao dished out, hell if Aishe wasn't afraid to start this shit, why should she be? Hell maybe she'd renew that invite for a beer, double hell maybe she'd even introduce Pakpao to Bas. Even if neither of them figured it out Reign would enjoy the oddity of a werewolf meeting a vampire.
With all that running through her head Pakpao got one of Reign's best taunting 'game faces' the kind that had made her a lot of money in her hustler days.
"Bring it on."Â?
She gave Pak her most innocent smile. Her hand instinctively shot up as the frisbee whizzed by and she snagged it, realizing only too late that Sirius was on the other side of it and he meant business. Aishe very rarely cursed, but she couldn't help it. Maybe it was negated by a burst of giggles as she said it.
"Oh shit."
Sirius barreled into her as a particularly large wave hit and Aishe tumbled backwards into the surf. Unlike Kem, who had no trouble with such things, she reacted as any human would (which apparently had been Pak's reaction too) and inhaled a good deal of salt water.
Coughing and laughing, she triumphantly held her hand up; she'd kept her grip on the frisbee even with a large dog attached to it. She and Sirius engaged in a brief tug of war before Aishe gave up and let herself fall back into the surf just in time for another wave.
Finally sitting up, she fingered wet hair away from her face and shrugged at Pak.
"Karma. See? You've already gotten revenge."
Rather than protesting, that she didn’t believe in karma (she sort of did but sort of didn’t) and that she’d be getting her revenge any way Pak just laughed. Not quite the giddy silly breathless laugh she and Kem had shared the other night but still a good on.
Still laughing to herself, she, without thinking, fished her cigarette case and lighter out of her pocket. The cloves were soaked and the lightered sputtered and died as she tried to light it She scowled accusingly at the wet clove, rolled her eyes at Aishe and a smile crept across her face.
“This is what I get for wanting a quite evening out.”
Once he finally had it he quite proudly, and quite suddenly, trotted back to Reign and sat expectantly at her feet waiting for her to throw it again. Reign, however, was back to laughing at both Aishe and Pakpao and was in no condition to throw. Instead she collapsed on the dry sand and continued to snicker.
“I’m willing to bet money you don’t get off that easy.”
She quipped at Aishe.
“Karma is way too passive and she’ll want in on things.”
Reign only grinned as Pakpao half saluted her with the wet cigarette. The blond almost –almost- wished she had a clove or two on her for Pakpao, but Reign had given them up years ago. Well except for the very occasional bum on a late night or some such.
Shrugging at Reign she said, "Well, it was worth a try."
Then, poking, a finger at her neighbor she added, "Don't think you're going to get off totally scott-free. You've done enough laughing to deserve your fair share of dunking, you know. And we can't have a three-quarters wet group."
She had a feeling Pak might just help her get Reign under... not that she needed help, but some things you just did not do when trying to keep your neighbor from discovering you were undead. Like picking her up with one hand and lugging her into the ocean.
Looking at Pak she frowned a little. "I'm sorry Pak. I didn't mean to ruin your cloves... or your lighter. Though it's for the best. Those things cause cancer, you know."
It was only half-jest. Aishe had still been human for far longer than she'd been a vampire, and she couldn't resist the urge to point it out. Smoking did kill, after all. What if Reign got lung cancer from second-hand smoke? That would suck to no end! She didn't feel too badly about chiding Pak but she did offer a mischievous little grin.
“I’ve had a wet sandy dog all over me all night and you’re calling me dry? And lets just remember I didn’t start this.”
She flashed a grin at the Aishe shape. Oh great Pakpao and Aishe looked a lot a like with her glasses off, that was going to be fun. At least they had different colors on, that should help.
The comment about cancer almost made Reign laugh. But not wanting to explain it, she managed to turn it into a cough instead.
Pak raised an elegant eyebrow at Aishe.
“You’re lucky I didn’t have the blackberry or the Nokia.”
The Nokia was her newest toy an extremely powerful pocket computer that made the blackberry look like a joke. It still had some limitations but she was getting to like it a great deal.
“Now if you have a guilty conscious inter office mail is a wonderful thing.”
At least for the cloves, the lighter she could only hope it dried out. It was custom and more than a bit of flash. Even Pak wouldn’t have the heart to make Aishe pay for it.
“Just make sure you get the right brand.”
She had a comment about immortally half way out of her mouth before she remembered her Clark Kent get up for the night and just glowered at both the younger women at the same time.
“But yes ten points for saving my life.”
Not that that sounded at all bitter. Pak added it to her list of things to get Aishe back for.
To Reign she nodded her head. "All right, I didn't say dry exactly... but you're not dripping wet! We'll fix that before the night's out." She offered Reign a sweet smile and playfully splashed a handful of water at her.
"Water's nice though," she pointed out, flopping onto her back and experimenting, letting several waves wash over her without coming up for air. It was a novel feeling; she knew she needed air on a fundamental level and she imagined a vampire would, eventually, drown if left underwater for a long period of time, but she was more than capable now of holding her breath (or simply not breathing) for extended periods. If she didn't panic and breathe out of reflex, she'd be fine.
Sitting back up she once more pawed wet hair away from her face and grinned at her neighbor, patting the water as if it were a couch cushion and she were inviting her over.
"You could save us the trouble and just come roll around in it now," she suggested.
Thoroughly wet she flopped back down in the sand, thankful she lived near by.
“Satisfied? And I promise no wet cigarettes from me.”
Wiping the water out of her eyes, she retrieved her glasses from her left shoe and shoved them on. Oh that was better she could tell the difference between Aishe and Pakpao now.
“Too salty though.”
She didn’t understand Aishe’s… experimentations. Why the new vampire was laying in the water. Sand got –every where- it was not romantic, it itched. Having a suspicion that what ever Aishe was up to was more vampire than human, she chose to send.
[What on god’s green earth are you up to?]
Continuing aloud, she noted,
“You’ll get all pruney that way.”
Those thoughts ran right out of her head as Reign lopped into the ocean. See this was why she sponsored the girl, she was completely unpredictable and it was amusing as all hell. Pak didn’t quite laugh but she did have a lopsided grin plastered on her face.
“Took the cowards way out did you?”
Pak's voice in her head didn't surprise her, not much. She was used to talking with Kem that way so her answer was prompt and quite natural. [I was playing! Next time I get tackled into the water I'll remember not to breathe in. I didn't stay under any longer than a human would have - did I?] She was sure she'd been under the surf for only a minute or so, nothing outrageous for the average in-shape human. There was always the chance time had gotten away from her a little bit though, so she looked to Pak to confirm.
"Everyone gets pruney in water," she said. "It's a necessary evil." She held up her hand and mused over the fact that apparently even vampires got pruney in water.
She figured she'd let Reign address the more serious issue of cowardice, but she couldn't help wishing their neighbor would address it by figuring out how to dunk Pak again.
Absently she checked her fingers, they were a bit pruney as both Pakpao and Aishe noted.
“Discretion is the better part of valor and you’ll notice I’m not out a perfectly good pack of smokes and I didn’t have to swallow the eastern seaboard either.”
All of a sudden, Reign was just sort of lazy. They’d literally run and jumped and had a good time. She could go for a beer.
She looked to Aishe,
“Id ask you for help with retaliation but some how I think you want to live.”
Pak was a bit amused that Aishe was worried about appearances and wondered what she would do if Reign knew what she was. It wasn’t her place to make that decision though. If Aishe wanted to take Reign into her confidence she could, but Pak didn’t think so
“Or you could just stay out of the water. Unless you are forcibly thrown in that is.”
She challenged, not in an unfriendly manner. OK it was flat out teasing but it had to be said.
Reign’s words caused her to do a bit of a double take. That was not like Reign, well not like the Reign of late. She didn’t say anything and instead let Aishe and Reign work that out. No matter what happened though she was so –not- going back in that water.
"Don't forget... in Pak's own words, revenge is a dish best served cold." She flashed Reign a conspiratorial grin and splashed her right after that, getting Sirius wet as well.
She shook her head at Pak's next words. "I wouldn't throw you in, Pak. I mean, I didn't even throw you in before. I just applied physics and let gravity do most of the work."
Well, gravity and her arm. Semantics!
Reign shook her head ruefully.
“If I don’t get you back right away I tend to forget or lose my motivation or something equally dumb. If some one could invent a revenge microwave I’d make them rich I’m sure.”
That was a great idea, freeze the moment put it away and after a few weeks pop it in nuke it and remember you had to get some one back and act on it. That could be fun as hell, especially if you forgot to label the revenge packets and never knew who you’d be getting back and for what and from how long ago. Or maybe it would just start wars, who knew.
“Oi!”
Reign protested the splashing and with a quick shift managed to launch a huge splash at Aishe. Sirius in the mean time had stood up and shook himself off getting both Reign and Aishe wetter.
Pak agreed noncommittally. It wasn’t like Aishe had been underwater for minutes she’d just been experimenting. Pak couldn’t quite remember experimenting like that, maybe she hadn’t, maybe that’s why she’d swallowed so much water.
“Very cold so if you wind up swimming in January I wouldn’t be at all surprised.”
She idle threatened Aishe while backing up slightly away from the splashing going on. She’d had quite enough of that for one night.
“Throw trip I’m not worried about the details the point is you put me in the water.”
Pak just snorted at Reign’s revenge microwave. Only Reign.
“I’ve seen you cook you’d let your revenge get freezer burn.”
Microwave revenge. "I like it. It takes passive-aggressive to a new level!"
Sirius shook, spraying them yet again, and Aishe finally stood up from the surf. She'd see if she could drag Kem back here at a later date. With appropriate swimming attire. She wasn't a good enough swimmer that she wanted to risk the choppy waves alone, but Kem swam like a fish and wouldn't let her get caught in undertow.
"Don't worry though Reign, I won't let you forget you owe her one," Aishe grinned at her neighbor.
Wringing her shirt out, she looked at all four of them, dripping wet and in various stages of content. "Want to head back to our place? I'm pretty sure we could handle something to drink, and I know we can find you some dry clothes Pak."
Aishe and Pak were roughly the same height; she had no doubts Pak would fit into her own clothing, and if her friend wanted something even more casual Aishe could throw one of Kem's t-shirts at her. Aishe regularly raided his closet for comfy stuff to sleep in and by this point he was no longer surprised to see her in stolen clothes. Imagine his surprise if half of Nachton were to start walking around in his t-shirts.
Wading back to shore she waited for her friends' responses, mentally invetorying the contents of their pantry and fridge. Plenty there to at least make snacks and drinks.
If she remembered right, she had a blanket or something in the trunk of the Bird and she could throw that over the seat. If she was –really- lucky she’d find a pack and a lighter in the glove box.
“Dry would be good, I think you owe me dry.”
Watching the two younger, much younger, women get going Pak realized that Aishe and Reign must be about the same age. Granted Aishe would be outliving Reign by centuries but right at this point in time they weren’t that different.
Why did she feel like an outsider? Shaking that though off she tossed the blanket over her seat (she’d walk before ruining the upholstery) she started up the Lil Bird waving to the other two as they got going. It looked like Reign had brought her car so she didn’t feel bad driving.
Oh look! Cloves! She could have one when she got to Aishe and Kem’s.
((OOC… every one out.))
