The Asian Festival (Attn: Dana/Open)

Not being a subtle driver Pak had put the 'Lil Bird through its paces but she never even risked scratching the paint on her precious 57 Thunderbird. She loved her car. It was a nice night out so the top was currently stowed in the trunk. She'd have to put it back up when they parked, but for now, she enjoyed having the wind in her hair. Reaching their destination, she parked a fair distance from any other car and under a light. Sliding out of the car, she set about putting the top back in place and locking up.

Apparently, it was cultural awareness month in Nachton as Pak had gone to a Celtic festival with Kem and Aishe last weekend and after some chat had settled on an Asian heritage festival tonight. There should be plenty to do and see. Calligraphy demonstrations in several language, bonsi and origami demos, food, drink, shopping from silk to jewelry to art, dancers were performing, artists were arting and many other things.

Pak absently smiled at the sounds and smells. It was far neater and quieter than the market back home had been but it wasn't that far off.

"Where do you want to start?"Â?

Aishe 15 years ago
Aishe chuckled. "From what Kem tells me your cooking skills are almost nonexistent." She couldn't resist the urge to needle Pak after the chocolate comment, although she gave her friend a little mocking bow. "Thank you for broadening my horizons. I'm sure they would make me a chocolate version if I made puppy-dog eyes."

She practiced that expression then and there, making her eyes as big and sorrowful as she could, tilting her head down and to the side to look up through her thick lashes first at Pak, and then at Dana. No one appeared to be throwing chocolate at her though so she gave an exaggerated sigh.
"Maybe I need to practice."

When Dana mentioned her eating habits Aishe shook her head. "Working nights and meals on the fly? That's a killer. What do you do, if you don't mind my asking?"

It sounded like Dana had a hell of a schedule.
Dana 15 years ago
To the human public, what was it she did? She took a moment to decide what to call herself. Technically she wasn't a lawyer, but did a lot of work in the law, well around it really.

"I work in immigrations law." There that was ambiguous enough to tell them what she did with out telling them what she did. It would be difficult to explain to anyone outside of the Clan.

"What about you two? What do you do?"
Pakpao 15 years ago
“I don’t need to cook, I have other uses for the pots and pans and he knows it.”

Pak said sounding slightly indignant. Uses like trying to hit Kem in the head with them.

“Besides I’m cute and above cooking.”

She bit her lip in an attempt to not laugh at Aishe’s puppy dog eyes. The girl had to know better than to think that would work on her. But an A for effort.

Now to Pak that sounded like an IT geek. But Dana hadn’t even shown up on her geek-dar so that didn’t fit. She made the appropriate sympathetic sound about working too hard and too many hours and turned a curious eye on her new acquaintance wondering what the answer would be.
Aishe 15 years ago
Aishe's eyes widened at Dana's profession. "Wow," she said. "No wonder you have crazy hours. That must be a hectic job, here in Nachton." Nachton was second only to DC and New York when it came to insane amounts of foreign visitors and immigrants, as far as she could tell.

"I work at Meridian Apex, in the Archives," she responded. Her position in security was, on the books, unofficial. Since she had started out working incognito for Chris, it had been decided that it was best not to have her linked with Security. Instead she was listed as a linguist in the Archives, which was also true. Although she had nothing on Kiamhaat when it came to translations, he'd still asked for her help when he'd gotten overwhelmed. It took her longer than it took him, but in the end her work saved him some time.

"I'm a linguist," she continued easily. "I work on translating various Egyptian writings."

She giggled at Pak's quip but didn't explain it to Dana this time - how was she supposed to explain Pak's hurling a fryping pan at Kiamhaat's head, and make it known that it was really a gesture of affection? Best not to touch on it. Pak could field that one if she chose.
Dana 15 years ago
Crinkling her brow, she tap a finger against her lips. "Not hectic, no, just constant. I've no shortage of work, but I find time to do it all." She gave a conspiratorial wink. "There are, after all, twenty-four hours in a day."

Dana didn't have a clue what Meridian Apex was, and made a mental note to find out, as the way Aishe said it meant that it was a known entity here in Nachton.

"That sounds fascinating. I'm a bit of a language buff myself, though Egyptian is not something I've ever looked into. Do you speak or read any other languages?"

She noted that Pakpao had not yet indicated her line of work and wondered if that was because it was not something she wished to share or if it had been simply a desire to let she and Aishe talk about themselves first. It was not necessarily important and so she would not delve, but she might perhaps ask again later.
Pakpao 15 years ago
Pak cocked her head curiously at Dana. That was not the smell she got from the pixie. But it didn't really matter and it wasn't as if she had a magical talent for picking out a job biased on physical appearance and sharing a drink and a dance. So what did she know. Could be interesting.

"Do you get to tackle any cute boarder patrol agents?"Â?

She asked with utter sincerity.

"Must be a bit of a challenge though trying to keep everything lined up though, but I'll bet you're not bored."Â?

The law would bore her to tears so she left it alone letting Meridian's legal eagles handle things for her when necessary.

Recognizing that Aishe wasn't quite telling the truth she decided it was for a good reason and didn't say anything. There were days she wondered exactly what Aishe did do. Of course there were days she wondered what she did.

"I do some IT work for Meridian. It keeps me off the street."Â?

For the most part Pak down played her presence in IT.

Her face brightened as they found the Chinese section and she started looking for squid on a stick, quite content to let the other two talk about languages. Most of her additional languages were coding languages and that didn't seem to fit the topic.
Aishe 15 years ago
Aishe shook her head at Dana. "A little bit of Latin," she said, "but not really enough to consider myself an expert. Egyptian and English are plenty. I suppose you can count hieroglyphics as one, but I kind of tend to lump them in with Egyptian as a whole. I guess if you throw some coptic and maybe a little semitic in there too you could cover everything I know. Mostly I read hieroglyphs and I can speak ancient Egyptian. It came with the territory." She gestured to herself, indicating her light accent. She'd moved to the US at a young age but she'd never completely lost her foreign tones.

Ancient Egyptian was a skill she'd cultivated out of interest and one Kiamhaat had been helping her expand upon. Nothing like learning Egyptian from someone who'd lived when it was still spoken. The textbooks were vague, unless you happened to be dating a walking talking textbook. Aishe had enough information from Kiamhaat that she could probably become one of the foremost Egyptian linguists of their time, if she wanted to devote herself to studying it more intensely. It seemed like cheating to her though, so she continued to slog through book after book, learning as she went and using Kiamhaat's knowledge to augment her readings.

She laughed at Pak's question about border patrol agents and nodded her agreement with her friend's guess about Dana's job keeping her busy.

"There are twenty-four hours in a day," she said to Dana, "but when do you sleep?"

Aishe stood back while Pak went searching for the aforementioned squid on a stick, watching with amusement and wondering what she was in for - not to mention how she'd gotten into it to begin with!
Dana 15 years ago
Dana chuckled. "There's no border in Nachton."

What in the world was IT? Dana took a moment and sifted through the information in her head about the modern world, but could not find a definition for that phrase. Then a passing conversation with Sebastian floated into her head. He'd called her the resident IT department when he'd visited several years ago. It meant internal technology. Interesting, though she was sure she knew only half of what Pakpao did if she worked for a large corporation.

Ancient Egyptian sounded fascinating.[/i] "That must be fascinating work. I'm not much for ancient languages unless you count Celtic."

Grinning she faked a yawn.

"Who needs sleep when you can make new friends by being accosted by a bar tender. Not to mention have food adventures involving squid on a stick."

Dana grinned and broke the space bubble around herself by giving Aishe a nudge with her elbow.
Pakpao 15 years ago
Pak just lightly snorted at the two of them as they rambled about languages.

“Geeks.”

She muttered, totally disregarding the irony of that statement.

Dana’s response, however, earned a wry smile.

“I still think we let him off too easy. And if I don’t get reimbursed for my shirt there will be hell to pay.”

She really was irritated, it had been one of her favorite tops. She’d gotten it one of her most recent trips to France.

“At least he didn’t get my shoes.”

The shoes were a work of art by Christian Louboutin, black floral lace over white satin peep toes with red four-inch heels and red soles. She’d bought them to replace the shoes Kem had ruined while they were fleeing from zombies.

Having paused to admired her footwear when Pak looked up she gave an elated shout.

“Found it! How many are we getting?”

For there it was, in all its glory, squid on a stick.
Aishe 15 years ago
Aishe grinned at Dana and let herself be nudged sideways. "Oh it's going to be an adventure all right," she affirmed. "I don't know how you can wear those," she added to Pak, boggling at the ridiculous shoes with their high heels. "They're so impractical. Didn't you learn your lesson last year?"

She looked down at her own sturdy sneakers, not her usual clunky shoes this time but a good pair of Salomon trekkers to match her gray yoga pants. Let it not be said Aishe wasn't prepared for a zombie outbreak. Or a decathlon. Whichever.

As Pak nearly swooned over her own footwear, Aishe saw the squid on a stick. Pak apparently did too, since she exclaimed in apparent delight. Aishe turned to Dana, shrugged, and said,
"I'm in. I owe you. Your treat."

It was only fair; Aishe had bought the haggis. The squid on a stick smelled surprisingly good. It was coated in some kind of glaze and then popped onto a little grill. So far it was way better than haggis, by the smell alone. The tentacles gave her pause for consideration but she put her concerns aside. She signed up for this, after all.
Dana 15 years ago
Dana looked down at her own strapy stilettos, hers were simple black straps criss-crossed over her foot. She was sure they were a designer of some kind, Cadence had made sure of that, but beyond that she knew nothing of them.

"They're not impractical, not with their multiple uses of man-mishing rods, improptu weaponry and not to mention what they do for your calves."

Grinning, Dana turned her attention to the fish at hand, her expression turned dubious as she eye the creatures impaled on their sticks.

"I think I'll pass on this one."
Pakpao 15 years ago
“Personally I just like to come close to eye level with most of the guys in my department.”

She cast another look at her shoes.

“Besides they’re pretty and its not like I spend every day fleeing for my life.”

Not being at all fluent in Chinese Pak simply asked for two of the squids, shaking her head slightly at Dana who was chickening out.

“It just a different version of calamari… sort of. Mostly.”

Receiving both she managed a ‘xie xie’ but that was the extend of her vocabulary. She handed one to Aishe.

“You are missing out. This is much better than haggis.”
Aishe 15 years ago
Aishe shrugged it off; clearly these people were going to insist on insensible shoes. It was a battle she could never win, but she vowed to continue her private crusade for sensible, practical footwear.

"I don't think I've ever had calamari," she said, accepting her squid from Pak. She sniffed it; it smelled like teriyaki, with the delicious smoky grill flavor added in. Always a woman of her word, she bit into the side of what appeared to be its head.

It wasn't rubbery as she'd expected, having heard that report from many acquaintances who'd eaten it. Instead it was quite tender but firm. The squid itself didn't seem to have a very strong taste of its own. Instead she got more of the sweet flavor of the teriyaki. Swallowing with a little "mmm" of approval she tackled a tentacle. It was a little bit tougher but still tasty.

"Not bad, Pak. Way better than haggis. I wonder if they could dip it in chocolate?"

Hmm, chocolate-covered squid. That might need some exploring.
Dana 15 years ago
She couldn't help but chuckle. "Possibly, but I'd rather not eat something that might disagree with me just before work."

Dana was sure she'd eaten squid at some poinr in her life, but it wasn't important enough to remember. Another chuckle passed her lips as she watch Aishe try the little sea creature.

"You might be taking things a bit far, there Aishe." Her nose wrinkled, but laughter ruined the effect.

Against her hip her small purse began to vibrate, startled Dana pulled the little green phone she purchased for herself so that her drivers wouldn't have to keep giving her one. It had the office's number displayed across the screen.

What could possibly be so important the interns couldn't wait?
"I'm sorry I have to take this."

With a smile of apology she stepped away and answered the phone. After listening for a few moments, she spoke with some annoyance at the girl on the phone. It was not a problem that required her attention and this was not the first time this had happened. Most of the young paralegals and interns finished their work long before she would even be available, but this girl had a knack for drawing out a issue then dumping it on Dana when she got there.

She would have to speak with Bao about this girl. Tonight, and while the child was still there. Dana hung up with the girl and returned to Aishe and Pakpao.

"It looks like I have to go put out a small fire."
Pakpao 15 years ago
“You’ve never had calamari? If I didn’t know better I’d think you’d have been living under a rock.”

Some days it was hard to remember that Aishe was so young. But little things like not having tried calamari reminded her.

Pak tackled the squid with no fear starting with the tentacles. She was a little disappointed that Aishe didn’t hesitate much, if at all, in trying the unusual street food. Lord knew she’d been hesitant with the haggis. She was going to have to try harder to throw her friend.

Playfully rolling her eyes at Dana, she shook her head.

“The girl wants to chocolate coat –everything- in chocolate. I’m surprised they let her in the archives, I’d be afraid she’d cover the papyrus in coco.”

Understanding all about work emergencies Pak just half smiled and let Dana take her call.

“Better a small fire now than a big one later.”
Aishe 15 years ago
"I think Kem would take exception to his pretty little house being compared to the underside of a rock," Aishe said, her mouth full of tentacle. She swallowed, licking her lips. The squid was quite good.

Pak's next comment made her wrinkle her nose.
"Who puts chocolate on papyrus? That's a waste of good chocolate," she said. She turned to Dana, though, and said wisely, "Chocolate does make everything better."

When it appeared Dana would have to leave them she frowned. "I'm sorry to see you go," she said. "It was nice to meet you though."
Dana 15 years ago
Dana smiled in return. She was not an integral part of Bao's office, but the younger women seemed to come to her when they had trouble, probably because she kept the same hours as Bao and seemed more approachable. Mostly it annoyed Dana.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a slim black case and a pen. Pulling two cards from the case she jotted her cell number on each one, and gave them to Aishe and Pakpao.

"It was great to meet you both. I hope we can get together again soon."

She put her things back in her purse and offered her hand to both women.

"Enjoy the rest of your night."

With a smile Dana turned away from the women and as she walked away began to dial the number for her driver, Bao's office was too far too walk from here.

((ooc Dana out pending response)
Pakpao 15 years ago
“Good to meet you too.”

Pak smiled at the other woman and slid the business card into her cigarette case. It was an odd filing system but it worked for her. At least it guaranteed she would see the card again soon and file it more formally. The question of whether or not she would actually call was another story all together. Pak could be sociable enough but she didn’t go out of her way to seek new friends or acquaintances. Whether she knew it or not Aishe was being given the task of contacting Dana.

“I think I want a bonsi.”

She said between bites of squid. It would be a nice addition to her office. She was also feeling a bit generous and might pick one out for Kem and Aishe as well.
Aishe 15 years ago
"Good luck at work Dana," Aishe said, accepting the young woman's number with a smile and tucking it into her wallet, sliding that back into her small purse.

She would have to come up with another outing soon so that they could invite Dana along. She seemed like a nice person. Watching her leave, Aishe nibbled thoughtfully at her teriyaki squid and then turned to Pak.

"How did you meet her again?"

It was unusual to see Pak out with someone not from the Clan or from Meridian. Not that Aishe was prejudiced in any way; it was just surprising. Especially given Pak's recent experiences and consequent shyness of strangers. It never hurt to check up on things... and people. In a tactful and completely unobtrusive way of course.
Pakpao 15 years ago
Tossing out the remnants of her squid Pak raised an eyebrow at Aishe. It was quite possible that the younger vampire was checking up on her. She probably was. Pak wasn’t certain if she was flattered or annoyed. Of course she wasn’t sure of a lot these days especially when it cam to strangers, but Dana had seemed safe.

“In Babylon. I was trying to find a new place of dinner and was attacked by a bar tender.”

She indicated semi stain on her shirt.

“She agreed to join me in a class action suit as her drink was completely unpalatable.”

Pak refrained from mentioning her failed hunting attempt. The one that had turned from seduction to assault. Kem she –might- have told, but probably not she still didn’t feel good about Kem seeing her breakdown. In fact, she hadn’t told Kem that her maker was in town yet, she wasn’t sure how to say that without sounding panicky.

As she spoke, she strolled leisurely along looking for her bonsai.
