Dogsitting
Reign had come by the Den, with Sirius Drew was starting to wonder if she went any where without the dog, with the intention of helping him look at some PhD programs. He still wasn't keen on the idea but he wasn't ruling it out. She seemed to be pushing the idea. Of course that lead to him needling her about what she was doing with her degree and that lead to a fight. The girl did seem to love to argue sometimes.
They'd been in the middle of said argument when she got a call from her manager and had to run. Drew couldn't help but wonder what constituted a pool emergency, but he didn't ask. Promising to only be an hour or two, she asked if she could leave Sirius with him. Drew had been too surprised to say no. He and the dog got on OK though and for a while, they just hung out in his rooms. However, Reign was now almost late and the dog was getting restless. So Drew grabbed and old baseball and took himself and Sirius out to the huge lawn to play fetch. At least it was a good work out for his arm.
Jillian grinned widely, bumped her shoulder against Drew, and shook her head.
"You should know there is very little that will stop me from eating. It's really no chore to sit still long enough for that."
Though Jillian did almost inhale her food, when Jesse made himself comfortable on her leg, she slowed down a little. How exciting it was to have him react so familiar with her, she thought, before she pulled herself back into check. Jesse treated her pretty much the way Drew did, in a very sweet, and friendly manner. She really did have to stop letting herself get so carried away by such small exhibits of innocent affection.
"Okay, volleyball it is...but...does anyone have a volleyball?"
The young woman giggled at the blatant lack of planning, but hoped someone would answer in the affirmative. And then remembering Drew really was their only hope, turned her eyes to him.
“You still have to wait an hour before you go swimming.”
Oh dear god they were serious. She sighed to herself and vowed to try and roll with it.
As she ate, she watched the play between Jillian and the boy and was amused. If she didn’t know better it would be hard to tell they didn’t have a thing going. Or maybe that they were trying to start a thing. Either way it made her smile, well smile and feel slightly old. She had to remind herself she was only a year or two past the boy.
“Don’t look at me I’m not even sure what a volley ball looks like.”
Drew protested.
He did –love- the organizational skills of this group. Although, Reign was off the hook as she didn’t live here and Jesse was new so he was excused too. Hmmmm speaking of Jesse he wasn’t getting in as many questions has he wanted. Although, he couldn’t think of a good way to bring anything up that didn’t sound like a suspicious older brother. So he shrugged it off.
Wolfing down the rest of his meal, sans silver wear Drew found his feet and trotted over to one corner of the field and let himself in the storage shed. It didn’t take long for him to immerge triumphant with a ball and the makings of a net the poles just had to be assembled and then the whole thing staked in place.
“Oh ye of little faith and precious little planning. Jesse want to give me a hand we can let the girls clean up.”
Drew’s eyes danced he was so going to catch hell for that.
Chuckling he stood to help Drew with the net, but made a mad dash out of the line of fire when he heard the man's words.
"Uh oh." He half mumbled, and threw a totally innocent look in Jillian's direction. Pointing to himself and shaking his head, Jesse then gave Drew a look of helplessness, and moved even farther away from Jillian's reach.
Jillian was on her feet faster than Jesse thought possible, and looking like she was going to breathe fire at any minute. Of course Jesse could see she was also having a difficult time not laughing.
"Reign...he's all yours. Jesse and I will clean up, as long as you don't let him get away with that."
Jillian handed Jesse one of the bowls of salad, and began putting the leftovers into a tub. Shaking her head, making a big deal out of the remark, Jillian mumbled an unintelligible string of words half beneath her breath. Every few words, or sounds, she would pause, bite her tongue and fight not to laugh. The goofy looks Jesse gave her as he helped repack the food, didn't help much, but that he played along did.
"Don't get any ideas, Mr. Katsaros." Jillian nudged Jesse, and headed inside. Out of the corner of her eye, Jillian saw Jesse hold up his hands in mock surrender, and then salute her as if he were ready to obey her orders.
Reign scowled darkly at Drew, looking extremely menacing.
“But he will be punished later.”
It also seemed like they had changed Drew’s plans so she hopped up and started helping to put the poles together and string the net taut between them. Sirius was happy enough to stay next to the wall, apparently they’d worn him out before she got there as the dog looked almost asleep.
Soon enough they were done. She ambled back and perched on the wall to survey their handy work and to finish off her beer.
“What not going to mark out a court too?”
Drew grinned and wiggled his eyebrows in a suggestive manner completely un-phased by Reign’s death look. Although he had to admit she had one of the best he’d ever seen.
He also noticed that Jillian seemed to be keeping he and Jesse apart. Was she afraid he’d scare the boy off? Hell if –he- scared the kid off he didn’t deserve the attention Jillian was giving him. Although it did bother him a bit, maybe she didn’t trust him but that didn’t seem to fit with he and Jillian’s relationship.
Lazily he set the ball straight up in the air let it fall and repeated the process a few times grinning at Reign.
“Nope we’ll just have to work out what’s in and what’s out. I am not a gym teacher. Heads up!”
This time he set the ball towards the group for some one to catch. It was a light easy toss so it wouldn’t hurt if some one caught it in the face and it wouldn’t hurt anything if it was missed.
“How did we want to do the teams?”
to give her new friend a bit of breathing room. She really didn't doubt
that Jesse could take care of himself with Drew, or anyone else for that
matter. But she did understand that sometimes he seemed to go into sensory
overload, and the evening had been going so well that Jillian didn't want
to see even the smallest thing cause that too change.
As if reading her mind, Jesse stopped her, once they dropped off their
packs, and were leaving the kitchen. Luckily for Jillian the man wasn't at
all angry, but he did feel the need to assure her that he was okay, and
that she really didn't need to worry so much. He also told her he thought
it was kinda cute though.
"I know. You're a grown man, and survived just fine without my help before."
It was difficult to look him in the eyes just then, feeling a combination of embarrassment, and overstepping her role as a friend. Even if she was starting to feel more than friendly to Jesse, he hadn't ever given her an indication that he felt likewise. From now on she would need to be especially careful, and not treat him any differently than she treated Drew.
"We better get back before Drew and Reign think we've abandoned them."
The last thing Jesse wanted was for Jillian to feel bad about the way she felt for him. He had intended on making is own feelings known earlier, but was afraid he might scare her off, so he hadn't. But now he decided the time was right.
Sliding his finger beneath her chin, Jesse tilted Jillian's face up toward his. He studied her gaze for a few seconds, finding the pull of her eyes impossible to resist, and lowering his lips to just brush against hers lightly. Closing his eyes, Jesse claimed her mouth again when he met no obstruction, and deepened the kiss.
And then almost before it began, the kiss ended, and Jesse was leaning over Jillian, grinning.
"You're right. We need to get back outside, but I want to continue this ... conversation later. Okay?"
More than a little happy to see Jillian nod her head, Jesse threw a casual arm around her shoulders, and escort her back to their little party.
"Teams? Looks like that might have already been decided...?"
Jesse overheard the tail end of the conversation between Drew and Reign, and saw no real reason not to team up with the person they each knew better. Though for Jillian, that could have meant Drew just as easily, but Jesse ignored that fact.
"We could mix it up later if everyone wants...?"
Making sure he worded his responses in the form of questions, Jesse didn't feel the need to just railroad the subject. If the topic had been something he felt passionately about, he would have had no problem standing behind his suggestion. But this wasn't anything to create hard feelings over.
As long as everyone agree with him, he mused.
When she took the time to think about what had just happened, Jillian could feel her face turn beet red, and hoped the setting sun made it too difficult for anyone else to see. It never occurred to her that with their wolf senses, everyone but Reign would probably still be able to see just as well as if it were noon.
"Uhm, yea, that sounds okay to me."
Agreeing with Jesse was as much as she could come up with right then, so that was all she said. The risk of sounding like a lunatic was too great to press her luck.
Instead she bounced the ball into Drew’s head.
“Here that kimosabi you’re stuck with me.”
She’d hung around enough with Drew to know he wouldn’t be offended when she said it, she didn’t mean anything by it. It was rather funny how touchy he could be on the subject of his heritage though.
“Watch it pale face. Karma is a bitch.”
He also frowned a bit at Jillian being a bit distracted. OK he was going really going to have to keep an eye on Jesse. Right now he didn’t think he was a bad guy. Hell if he’d been a bad guy The Chief wouldn’t have let him stay. However, there was ‘good guy’ and ‘good enough to date my sister guy’.
He shrugged it off for now though.
“Well…. I guess I’ll serve then.”
He tossed the ball in the air and managed a nice over hand serve right in between the other team. Drew wasn’t too worried about rules or scoring they were just goofing around after all.
Drew's serve was perfect, and Jesse watched as Jillian easily returned the volley to the other side. Unsure if she would catch it at first, Jesse had run up behind her, only to step aside quickly and avoid a collision. Once the ball left Jillian's fingers, he lightly tapped the small of her back, congratulated her, and returned to his position toward the back.
He hoped the rest of the game went so simply.
Jillian shouted out about two seconds before the ball reached her fingertips, and she tapped it back over the net.
Though she hadn't played too much volleyball in the past, she did have a lot of time spent in playing the volleyball somewhat like a hacky sack, only using her hands instead of her feet. Being in situations that often required her to hang out with adults, yet find a way to amuse herself, Jillian found such methods to be entertaining to her, and yet not too distracting for the adults. At least she never heard any complaints from her parents.
Once she returned the volley, Jillian noticed Jesse had come up behind her, and mumbled something she didn't catch. Feeling his fingers on her back wasn't missed though, and she grinned at the touch.
Focus went back to the other side of the net then, and on with the game. There would be time later to ask her teammate what it was he had said.
However, while she was able to return this volley quickly, time would tell if she could keep it up. It was somewhat different returning the ball when someone else had served it, as opposed to when she lofted the ball herself.
He got under the ball and lightly bumped it toward Reign.
“Nice and easy get under it and set it up high.”
Drew prayed Reign understood the direction. She must. Every one played volleyball in PE and she was a klutz not an alien therefore she must know what he meant.
Damned boy had other plans. Set it. OK she knew what that meant. Reign quickly scooted under the ball and made the little triangle with fingertips spread pose she’d been taught and promptly missed. The ball obligingly bounced off her head and rolled away.
“Ow. Damned it that’s not how I planed that.”
She strode over to where the ball had stopped and held it up silently questioning who’s serve it was.
Watching the ball hit Reign on the head made it impossible for Jillian to remain serious. Thankfully she was able to hold her laughter back for the most part, and only let a couple giggles escape. But really, it was too comical.
"Oh darn. Better luck next time!"
She offered, trying to be supportive, and not let Reign feel bad. Jillian hoped her giggles could be overlooked.
Jesse was better able to be sympathetic to the blond woman's plight, and merely stepped forward, raising his arm to her silent questioning. Since her side served first and lost it, the ball was now his to serve.
When Jillian half turned and caught his eye, a giggle still on her lips, Jesse smiled, but gave her a soft glare. Yes it had been funny seeing the ball bounce off Reign's head, but Jillian might want to learn how to constrain herself a bit.
Not that he would say anything to her. It wasn't a major issue. Jillian was young, and having a good time, and Jesse didn't think there was any animosity at all in her reaction toward Reign. But sometimes it was just better to wait to laugh until the person being laughed at laughed first. If nothing else, having lived on the streets had given Jesse a tremendous amount of time to people watch, and fortunately he had learned a lot from that experience. If he could share some of that with Jillian, in the same way she shared her life experiences with him, it seemed they would both benefit.
Lucky for Jesse, Jillian took his silent reprimand with grace, and the game was back on.
Moving backward until it seemed he was in the correct position to serve, Jesse tossed the ball up and popped it over the net, set to come down almost exactly between Drew and Reign.
“I thought it was soccer ball!”
She protested with a slight grin before tossing the ball at Jesse who seemed to be indicating it was their turn.
“I don’t think I’ve played this game since high school, maybe college. I don’t quite remember the rules.”
Sure, she’d goofed around on the beach with The Guys and Vince on occasion but it had never been serious.
“And the first one of you pups to make a crack about my age is going to catch it.”
"Good thing you're so hard headed."Â?
He cracked, making sure to get the hell out of the way and hopping she didn't toss the ball at him instead of Jesse. Fortunately, she was playing nice and easily lofted the ball to the other team.
"Yeah because you're so bloody ancient."Â?
Drew cheerfully rolled his eyes.
"But you two might want to watch it she means that."Â?
He grinned enjoying giving Reign a bad reputation. She was fun to play with, besides he owed her for the Kemosabi comment. He also hopped the banter would encourage Jesse to chatter a bit more and have some fun.
