Dogsitting
Reign had come by the Den, with Sirius Drew was starting to wonder if she went any where without the dog, with the intention of helping him look at some PhD programs. He still wasn't keen on the idea but he wasn't ruling it out. She seemed to be pushing the idea. Of course that lead to him needling her about what she was doing with her degree and that lead to a fight. The girl did seem to love to argue sometimes.
They'd been in the middle of said argument when she got a call from her manager and had to run. Drew couldn't help but wonder what constituted a pool emergency, but he didn't ask. Promising to only be an hour or two, she asked if she could leave Sirius with him. Drew had been too surprised to say no. He and the dog got on OK though and for a while, they just hung out in his rooms. However, Reign was now almost late and the dog was getting restless. So Drew grabbed and old baseball and took himself and Sirius out to the huge lawn to play fetch. At least it was a good work out for his arm.
Jillian teased, relieved to find Reign able to laugh at herself. The whole issue of rules wasn't anything Jillian was hung up on. It was her opinion that they were all just messing around, hitting the ball back and forth. There really weren't any serious competitive thoughts in her head at the moment.
So when Jesse kind of glared at her, Jillian blew it off. He hadn't been around her long enough to know she laughed at just about everything, preferring to find humor in as much life as she could. This didn't mean she couldn't ever be serious, or was unable to recognize somber situations, but chose to see light in as much as was possible. Reign's reaction only proved Jillian's notion had merit.
But she would find no fault with Jesse either.
"Can't say I played it much in high school either."
Jillian mentioned in a way she hoped sounded like commiseration.
Shaking her head vehemently, Jillian would have never dreamed of commenting on Reign's age. Not that she was old, or even close to it. But that type of thought was one of those polictically correct ideas her mother had drummed out of her at a very early age. Being in the public eye and situations where she came into contact with so many different types of people, along side her parents, Jillian knew better than to ever talk about such things. Even with people her own age, it took Jillian some time to get to know them before she would even kid in such a way.
As Jesse served the ball, Jillian readied herself for a return from the other side.
He couldn't really help it if his eyes more often than not returned to gaze at the lovely backside of his partner. A split second of thought was allocated to Drew, and Jesse questioned whether or not his opponent had any such designs on his blond partner. But not one to look far beyond his own backyard, Jesse was happy to find his eyes back on the pretty brunette before him.
Shrugging it off he easily maneuvered himself under the ball and bumped it up so Reign could easily set it. He had designs on spiking it because that was always a good time.
“Just straight up. Even you can do this.”
He was spared a death look by the fact that she was concentrating so hard on the ball. She did much better this time and did set it straight up and a bit toward the net letting him jump up to spike the ball right between Jesse and Jillian.
“Now why would you want to play volley ball when baseball is so much more interesting.”
He quipped while setting himself up for a potential return.
That chaffed when she was in high school. She wanted to play, she loved the game. At least she was being denied a spot biased on her total lack of talent. That Reign understood, besides she had her own game to play and come about the time she was in high school she was starting to get really good at it too.
“What about you Jesse, you don’t strike me as the jock type.”
She had picked up that Drew was trying to draw the other man into the conversation and decided to try and help. And she wasn’t above being direct with her questions.
So as they played volleyball, the lack of communication on the part of her partner didn't even cross her mind. That he was there, participating at all, was a coup.
As she listened to Drew, she geared herself for a bit more intense play. Sure enough her instinct was spot on, but that didn't help her or Jesse get the ball as it was pounded into the ground between them.
Though Jillian dove for the ball, and tried to get her hands beneath it before it touched down, her efforts were futile. All she ended up doing was getting the wind knocked from her lungs, and pushing the ball away from the two of them.
"Ooof! Ah, damn."
Laughing as she imagined how silly she must have looked just then, Jillian, with Jesse's aid, quickly pushed herself back up onto her feet, and brushed herself off.
"Good one Drew, didn't expect that. Gonna get tough now, are we?"
Still laughing, Jillian smiled at Jesse.
"Ok...we need to get down to business now."
Winking at her partner, the young woman backed up, rubbed her shoulder briefly, and prepared for the next serve.
Jesse offered, watching the ball set up action, and delivery onto his side of the court. It didn't surprise him that much, as he estimated Drew must be somewhat athletic from his build, and overall visual good appearance. Before they had begun playing volleyball, Jesse had taken measure of his packmate and suspected they were close in age, and probably physical abilities as well. After hearing all the good things Jillian had said about her friend, Jesse had to admit had circumstances been different, he could have easily been jealous of his brother Kadzait.
But fortunately Jesse found Jillian to be so honest that he had no reasons to be concerned, and dismissed Drew as any kind of threat.
Reign's words brought his mind back to the moment, and once he helped Jillian up off the ground, he gave the woman an answer.
"Jock? No. I can play a lot of sports, but am mediocre at best. I never had a lot of experience playing in school, nor any real fascination for them."
His answer was a little stilted, as he continued to watch Jillian, making sure she wasn't hurt, and then ran after the wayward ball.
Once he returned to the court and tossed the ball to Drew, Jesse wondered if he should have elaborated on his reply. This social banter that went on in groups, even small groups, wasn't something he felt at ease with, and avoided as much as possible. He didn't seek out conversations with others either, as routine, but could usually carry on fair enough when it was just one other person. He had never spent much time trying to analyze his feelings on the subject either, but for some reason was now thinking maybe he should.
It might please Jillian, he mused, and that would please him.
Reign observed. She also thought it was a very nice try by Jillian.
“But you two can refrain from anything quite so fancy. Dirt tends to disagree with my digestive track.”
She’d had more practice drawing people out than one might think, that or Reign just didn’t always require an answer so she wasn’t put off by Jesse being so quiet. She’d just continue to ramble at him.
“You see your problem is that you’ve not been to a Cubs game. That’ll make any one a believer.” She paused for a second, considering. “Well unless you’re a Sox fan but then again there is no hope for Sox fans.”
“That’s was a good try Jillian. I thought you had it for a second.”
Apparently, Jesse just didn’t like jumping into general banter. Reign, however, seemed to be fixing this by talking directly at him. He approved. Drew had found that when she was in the right mood Reign would talk to anybody. It was sort of odd to watch. You’d be standing in line for a movie and she’d just randomly start rambling at the person next to her about whatever was on her mind.
“Dear god she’s started in on baseball some one save us! Serve you two serve!”
He said it loudly and dramatically clearly teasing. Baseball was one passion he’d found they had in common which was more than a little refreshing.
She'd have to start thinking of a nickname for Jesse. And then hope he wouldn't mind it.
Giving Reign a smirk, when the blond lady told her not to retaliate, in so many words, Jillian got into position to do just that. The subsequent talk of baseball teams pretty much just went over her head, but she appreciated both Drew and Reign's attempts to draw Jesse into the conversations.
Jillian just wished she wasn't so confident that they were wasting their time.
"Well, I certainly don't want to be the cause of indigestion in anyone."
Jillian tossed back at Reign, still laughing lightly, enjoying the game more than a little.
But could he really be faulted with the desire to just spend the rest of the evening with her? Was it really all that important to get to know these other two? Jesse couldn't see much advantage in it.
Not that he didn't like Drew, or Reign, as they both seemed personable. The both also appeared to be making every effort to include him in the little game. He slightly regretted not having the desire to reciprocate. But only slightly.
"No, sorry, we didn't win our serve, so that means its your turn this time."
Jesse served the ball back over the net with a quick pop, directing it at Reign.
Moving up alongside Jillian, Jesse put his hands on her hips, and gently shifted places with her. The move was more just a way to touch her, since it wasn't like they were playing for real or anything. But it was a semi-legitimate way of doing so without appearing overly aggressive.
"I did see a Yankees game once, back when I was about eleven, I think. My grandfather took me."
He left off the part about being bored to tears, and never wanting to see another game as long as he lived. To verbalize those feelings would certainly bring Reign down on him, he feared. It was obvious that she held the game of baseball in some form of reverence.
She quipped right back as she caught the ball as Jesse lofted it over the net. But only just, as she pretty much gapped at Jesse.
“Bah, the Yankees are –not- my idea of a baseball team. I’ll grant you they play a mean game and I’d love to see the new park but you just don’t get heart with them.”
It always felt to Reign that the Yankees were more cold and calculating, more business than baseball. It just didn’t have the same flavor.
She was starting to get the feeling Jesse was –trying- to shut her down and quite frankly that was beginning to irritate her. If he’d been just some random person she was chattering at in the street, fine, understandable, but you played a little bit different with family. Still she wouldn’t give up just yet, some people just took longer to warm up.
Any thoughts along these lines were interrupted as the boy started doing something odd.
“What in hell do you think you are doing?”
“You two have no idea how easy you just got off.”
He’d wandered behind her as she went into her mini rant and only laughed when she shouted at him.
“I’m trying to teach you how to serve, and not that wimpy girly underhand serve either.”
The taunt won him a glare but it also meant he got to help her with the serve. It took some doing and some demonstrating but he managed and Reign got the ball over the net with a fair bit of oomph, it wasn’t killer but it was OK.
So for now, she'd try to just enjoy the feelings, and not read anything more into them.
Smiling, as she listened to Jesse's conversation with Reign, she was happy to see he was getting along so well with her friends. He still wasn't being terribly chatty, but what he was offering was a lot for him.
"Growing up in Nevada...well, we never had any real professional sports teams to follow at all. I love playing almost any kind of sport, but I don't think I would be good just sitting and watching anyone play anyway."
She shrugged and gave Drew a smirk. He knew she was a bit antsy, and might be the only one to understand that remark. Though Jesse might by now as well, having been around her as much as he had been lately.
Laughing as Drew assisted Reign, Jillian gave a whoop of appreciation once the ball was launched successfully.
"Got it!!!" She bellowed toward Jesse, as she ran up to meet the ball with her hands.
"Here you go!" Her hands went under the ball perfectly, and Jillian set it up to Jesse as if she had done so all her life. Holding her breath, she stood back and waited, hoping he would spike it onto the other side of the net, much like Drew had done.
"I can't say I saw or felt any lack of heart in the game I saw. Overall I just thought it was a little pointless, and slow...boring actually." But that was his opinion on almost everything and anything he found no interest in. He was glad Jillian seemed to share his thoughts there.
Talk on the other side of the net turned away from him, and Jesse's eyes went back to Jillian, though he now had to turn sideways, and be a bit more obvious to do so. He could still hear Drew and Reign's mini verbal battle, and likened it a little to the banter he and Jillian experienced between themselves. Thinking Drew and Reign must be in the dating process, or beginnings of the same, it only drove home how his relationship with Jillian was progressing, and how he really needed to talk to her about it.
The last thing Jesse wanted was for Jillian to not know how he felt about her, even if he was still a little aprehensive about scaring her away.
The loud yelp Jillian made broke Jesse's train of thought, and he turned quickly to see the ball coming to their side of the court. Just as quickly he realized Jillian was going after it, and let her. Though he hadn't expected her to set the ball up to him, he handled it readily, and tried to mimic the action Drew made earlier. Luckily for Jesse, though his aim wasn't great, the ball did go over the net, and down toward the center of the court. Whether or not Drew or Reign would get it was anyone's guess.
"Thanks." He grinned at Jillian, once he was secure that his job had been done, for the moment anyway.
He cheered Reign on when she managed the serve.
Never taking his eyes off the ball he half laughed at Jillian.
“I have this image of you charging a field and trying to make a play before the short stop or possible stealing the ball and going for a three point shot.”
Drew grinned at Jillian.
“Of course all these images end with you being escorted out of the facility by the cops.”
Oh that was trouble. It wasn’t a killer spike but it wasn’t wussy either.
“Got it!”
He called it out of habit and dove at the ball, forgetting they didn’t have a nice sand court. It hurt a bit when he connected with the ground but not too bad and he did manage to keep the ball off the ground.
“We’re going to have to work on that.”
There was absolutely no jealousy in Reign, at least not when it game to the boy. He was… well he was. The thing with Jillian felt more brother/sister to her than romance but even if it had been romance he was entitled. She wouldn’t have stopped him.
Crap there was that spike thing again, and she –wasn’t- diving for the ball. Fortunately Drew did. No wait, that meant –she- had to do something with it! Reign charged up after the ball as best she could and managed to sort of set it. Unfortunately, she sort of set it right into the net and it landed back on their side.
“Well damned. That wasn’t what I planed.”
"Woot! Good job!"
The look Jesse gave her made her realize she was routing for the enemy and at least she had the good graces to blush. Not that she was at all apologetic. It was, after all, just good fun. And she had been an ally to Drew before Jesse had come on the scene.
Jillian did feel bad when Reign made her slight error, and the ball didn't make it over the net. Not that Jillian felt bad that they got the ball back, but the laugh she let out might have been a little better restrained. In all the excitement it was just too difficult not to get caught up in it, and by doing so, restraining herself became nearly impossible.
"Oh no! That sucks!"
And Jillian truly felt bad, but still laughed. Something had just struck her funny bone, and she went with it, grabbing onto Jesse's arm to steady herself and help regain her composure.
"Sorry."
She did apologize then.
"Uh...I'm not sure if you all know it, but to get a point you must win your serve."
Jesse grinned, but stood wary. He wasn't sure what kind of sense of humor Drew or Reign had, though he was now beginning to suspect they were decent people. Lucky for him everyone he seemed to meet in Nachton had been decent, to him anyway.
It was a nice feeling, to find other people you might be able to trust well enough to get along with...relax with.
Waiting for the other team to toss him the ball, Jesse whispered to Jillian.
"How about this time, we see if we can win a point? I think that's the whole point to this, isn't it?"
Again he grinned, and waved Jillian through to the serving spot at the back of the court. If she could serve the ball well, he was fairly confident he'd be able to return whatever Drew or Reign could send him. He felt like he'd gotten into a good groove now, and was starting to feel a little competitive.
Reign agreed with Jillian and rolled her eyes slightly indicating moderate sarcasm. She, after all, never minded when her opponent made a mistake she could benefit from.
“Wait, there are rules and we’re keeping score?”
Reign was genuinely puzzled. Of course, this realization brought out her more competitive nature. Damned it she wanted to win now! But it seemed like Jesse was being more teasing than anything so she just grinned.
She watched as Drew got the ball back over the net for the other side. She also got a look at her watch and frowned slightly. It was getting a bit dark too.
“Of course there are rules and a score!”
He shook his dead at Jesse and Jillian.
“It is so sad when the mind starts to go. Next she’ll forget where she parked her car.”
He caught Reign’s frown and observation of the time.
“You late for something else?”
“I’ve got an early appointment in the morning and I haven’t read half of what Janie gave me.” She replied.
“Next score wins it?”
She nodded.
“OK folks next score wins it!”
He called with a grin. That ought to wake Reign up a bit.
