"...and please send Putin my regrets for being unable to visit as of late. Next time I travel, Moscow will be my first stop. Yes, of course. Ne bolEy. Bud' zdorOva. Do svidAniya."
The screen went blank, and Megan mentally crossed one of her meetings off of the list. Russian interests seemed to be stable for the time being, but she would definately be keeping an eye on things. She touched the corner of the screen to signal she was ready for her next meeting.
"Océane Émond is waiting for you outside," Mari greeted her with her usual cheerful decor.
Megan allowed herself a gentle smile. It was always a pleasure to speak with Océ, though she suspected the subject matter wouldn't be quite as enjoyable as the company. She had received reports that Océ had been seen with Xerxes over the past few days, and imagined that to be the purpose of requesting this meeting. She wondered what he wanted, had her little game finally gotten to him?
"Go ahead and let her in, Mari."
Megan put the monitor into sleep mode and waited for Océ with a mix of curiosity and muted angst.
*Attn Megan - Some News
Oce came in from her dinner out with Xerxes. She had received a message after leaving that the lady was able to meet with her.
Megan had said she would be in her office so Oce entered the towers and proceeded to the outside of her office.
"MARI tell Megan I am here to see her." She said to the computer and waited.

Oce almost missed Mari telling her she was free to enter.
"Thank you Mari." She said and opened the door and entered the office. Megan of course was waiting for her. Smiling Oce walked towards her.
"So good to see you Aine," Oce greeted using the French word for Elder. Oce often felt Megan was like a mother to her. "Been busy?" She asked laughing slightly. "It has taken me ages to track you down a moment." She said pausing in front of the desk.
"I have well met someone you may find interesting." She said not beating around the bush. "Xerxes Asha has contacted me. I understand you two have a... history and I had a confrontation with him. I wanted to tell you before you found out by someone else. He invited me out for dinner this evening. I had hoped to speak with you before I went but you seemed to be tied up so I went. He has some interesting... questions." She said picking her words carefully. "May I sit?" She asked her elder. Oce always had the utmost respect. As she grew nervous to the woman's response she began to play with her pendant.

"For you there is always time," Megan responded in complete honesty. Rising from behind her desk she walked over to a nearby sofa and sat, gesturing to the space next to her. "Please, Océane, you needn't ask for permission here."
Megan considered telling Océ that she had known of the dinner with Xerxes, and of their prior encounter on the strip, then quickly thought better of it. She had found over the centuries, that Xerxes was not always easy to keep up with, but the moment he took his first step back into Nachton he belonged to her, and she had watched him like a spider from her tower. Océ, however, wouldn't have known this, and Megan didn't want the woman to feel as though she had failed in any way by not delivering news of his arrival sooner.
"Come, chéri," she said warmly. "Tell me what it was that Mr. Asha asked of you."

Megan seemed to be in a good mood. That comforted her a bit and her warm greeting always put her at ease. Oce went and sat down beside the lady.
"I needn't ask Aine but I like to." She smiled at her mentor. It was a sign of the deep respect Oce held for her.
"He knows I will not speak of you to him but he wishes to know Evenhet and of the other clans. He has business here. Oddly enough the information he seeks can be found by anyone who knows the least of the clan." She said that bit still puzzling her.
"Aine who is he?" She asked the burning question she had since they met. "I do not mean to pry I do not need to know the personal relationship but... he is odd. In spite of his arrogance there is something there I am not sure how to explain it." For some reason when she was with Megan she always felt like a child. Not because the woman was mean to her in anyway. Megan was an ancient. She had an air of knowledge and sophistication that guided Oce her entire 'life' as a vampire.

He has business here. The words were empty, like a broken promise. Megan knew his business, what he did in the years after he left her world behind, and she was unsure what would bring him back. His intent had been quite clear when he left, and now his abrupt return had confused her, maybe even frightened her. She hadn't expected, after all this time, that she might finally be able to confront her past.
"He is looking for a way back into the fold," she said, taking in Océ's eager expression. The woman was always so hungry for information, a trait that Megan had admired in her since she had known her as a young girl in France. It was rare these days, to find someone so earnest in their pursuit of truth.
"Our kind cannot isolate ourselves indefinitely,"Â? Megan continued. "We can only wander so far before we begin to feel the burden of time weigh on our sanity. No, Xerxes isn't looking for information, he is looking for a connection, something to bring him back." She paused and an almost sad expression passed over her face. "He is looking for me."
The words filled the space between the two women, and for some time neither of them spoke.

Oce looked at Megan so she had guessed what she was leading up to. She stored the information that was being shared in her mind. Who knew when it would come in handy?
Megan was being cryptic. Almost omen like. "Well if he means harm you know Aine he has to go through me first." She stressed her loyalty to the woman she cared about. "And... you guessed part of his intentions he let me see. He wishes to join the clan."
Oce wasn't sure what reaction that would get... From the way Xerxes told the story she was more likely stab out his eyes and cut off his fingers before allowing him near her precious Evenhet.

Megan smiled, and allowed herself a soft laugh. Océ was still very young by most standards, and not yet versed in the conceits of immortality. Only through experiencing the passing of time herself, would Océ understand why Xerxes had come back. For now, Megan just rested a hand on the woman's shoulder to comfort her.
"As much as you would like to, chéri, you cannot stand between us," she said. "This is a story that began several hundred years before you were born. You cannot be the one that writes an ending for it."
She wasn't sure if Océ would accept that, but Megan couldn't explain it further. "Things will work out," she said. "You will see."
Rising to her feet, she walked back over to her desk and sat down, touching the monitor and bringing up a profile for her next meeting. The man was Chinese, but represented Meridian interests in Thailand.
"I do have something that will require your attention though," Megan said, gesturing for Océ to join her at the desk. "The Thai government has recently reigned in lax anti-smuggling regulations, so operations there are more or less on hold for the time being. I need you to find a loophole that will allow us to ship artifacts from a recent dig outside of Chiang Mai."

"I will not stand between you Aine if that is what you wish." Oce said no she wouldn't interfere but she wouldn't let Megan fall. Megan may not allow her to become her bodyguard but she was always prepared just in case.
That is why she learned how to use knives better in the first place. Oce watched her walk to the desk and touch the screen. So the issue of Xerxes was put to rest for now. Oce joined her and leaned down slightly to see the screen.
Megan was offering her work. She jumped at the chance. It had been a bit since she had a real assignment. "I can do that." She said confidently having recently worked with a neighboring country. "Have I ever let you down?" She smiled at her teasingly. "If you could send the file to my office I will get right on it. I think its nearly lunch time there now."

"I've already sent it," Megan replied. "It will be waiting for you when you arrive."
Megan knew that Océ would have no problem with the task. She was one of the best legal minds to ever to work for the clan, a true testament to her youth that she could be so skilled at such a young age. The fact that she would only get better as she gained experience gave Megan much faith in the future of the company. She cleared the monitor once more, then rose to her feet and bowed her head to Océ.
"Thank you for the visit Océ, but I'm afraid I have other business that I must attend to. If you'll forgive me for cutting our meeting short..."

"Thank you Aine." Oce smiled gathering her things. "I will leave you to your work then. Do try and rest at some point." She teased the woman. If Megan could die she would certainly drop dead from over working herself Oce was sure.
"I will be speaking with you soon." Oce closed the door behind her and headed to her office. There was work to be done.
