Party Time?
It certainly was a good thing Fallon didn't work weekends. As it was, it seemed to be taking an inordinately long time to get everything organized for her dinner Wednesday night.
Having set one of the bags on the porch chair, while she unlocked the front door and went inside to put down the other three bags, she returned to the porch and grabbed it now. Then she realized the bag held things that she had bought for the porch, so she set it back down. She would deal with that project later.
For about the fifth time tonight, she wished she had asked Aishe if she wanted to help, but for the fifth time tonight she agreed that it wouldn't have been much of a treat for Aishe if she helped put it together.
No, Fallon was bound and determined to do this on her own, and suffer the consequences.
So far she had received three RSVPs, the sweetest having been Ana's. Such a nice message to leave on her voice mail. But there was still time, and if it turned out there would only be three others, that would still be three more at a party than she'd ever had before.
Noticing she was still standing on the front porch, Fallon laughed before turning and going back inside.
Once she had put the food away, certain she had enough for a house full of frat boys, she gathered all the candles together on the table, and then set out to distribute them through the house. Thinking they would make her house more festive, with spending the smallest amount of money, she had bought many. And they were all in complimenting scents. With winter still upon them in Nachton, Fallon had gone with comfort scents...cinnamon, apple pie, and vanilla. She now just hoped having the house smell like baked goodies wouldn't be offensive to anyone.
Taking the small stack of papers from her purse, she set them inside her bar. She had devised a list of items for the scavenger hunt, and had them printed up. Now she just had to remember where they were, and hope everyone would have fun playing.
Tucking the folded paper bags from her shopping under her kitchen sink, Fallon poured herself a glass of white zin, and went to sit on the porch. The night air was still crisp, but not as biting as it had been the past few nights. Setting her wine glass down, she took the other batch of candles out of the bag on the porch, and the little tin covers, and scattered them around. Some went on the railing, some went along the steps, and some were hung from hooks the prior tenants had left in the porch ceiling. Fallon took the long lighter from the bag, lit all the outside candles, and smiled. It did look very party like, and though it was a small effort, it made her feel a lot better about how things were going to go...or how she hoped they would.
As if to illustrate her own realization of stewpidity, she bonked the side of her head against the edge of a chair next to her place on the floor. Then she started giggling. "That's okay though, I digest quickly!"
He wondered how to get to know more information about these people. What clan Aishe and Alec were in. The history behind Ambrose's injury and just how Fallon had met Ana. Deciding to begin getting to know these people covertly was in order.
"How about instead of roller derby, we simply get to know eachother better?" He asked as sincerely as possible.
Momentarily lost in schemes involving jell-o, Aishe definitely perked up at the sound of dessert.
"You're singing my song now," she said. "In fact, let me help. I can, uh, protect the dessert from Alec."
She stood, bringing her plates with her, and headed to the kitchen. "Just tell me what and where Fallon, I'll bring it out if you like."
“There isn’t Jell-O involved in that game is there?”
He had to ask but had a slight smile on his face while he said it; it was after all a joke.
Nursing his drink, it crossed Ambrose’s mind to wonder who was going to protect the desert from Aishe. She seemed the most interested in the sweets.
Nursing his scotch, she shook his head slightly.
“No thank you Fallon. It was a wonderful meal… maybe later. They tell me cheese cake is hard to make and I sure wouldn’t want that to go unappreciated.”
Patting Ana's leg, Fallon was dead serious with that comment. She loved cheesecake but could live a week on one slice. She didn't want to see it go bad if at all possible.
Giggling at Cyrus' support, she had already pretty much guessed he was a protein kind of mall, all the way. But she had to acknowledge his attempt to appear semi interested. HIs next suggestion seemed perfect, though she thought that what she might want to know about Aishe would be better saved for another one of their girl talks. She had gotten to know a lot about the other girl very recently over lunch.
"No...no...I love that you want to help, but there's really not a lot involved in cutting up a cheesecake. I'll be right back."
And with that she stood up and went into the kitchen where she removed the cake from the fridge, and began cutting it into nice slices.
Once they were all placed on plates, or enough for those who wanted them, she carried them back into the living room.
"I'd like to say this is an old family recipe, but the truth is, it is a new family recipe...one I ran across in a magazine, and have loved ever since."
The 'cheese' part was in two obvious layers, with the more custard like part on the bottom, and the whiter more 'cream cheesy' part on top. However, the real secret was the crust, which was made up of crushed nuts and butter, mostly.
Handing a plate to Aishe, she held one out to Ana, but teased her, first pushing it towards her, then pulling it away. She didn't think the girl really wanted a piece, but was just having a bit of fun. It appeared the liquor had loosened her inhibitions just a tad.
"Alec? There's a piece out there just for you...you too Ambrose, just as soon as you're ready for it."
Returning to her place on the floor, she picked up the conversation where Cyrus had left off.
"So, do we do this like twenty questions, or 'truth or dare'?"
And then looked around at the others for a decision.
At Fallon's question about twenty questions or dares, she piped up from her position on the floor, "Uhm, what's 'truth or dare'? Why does that sound like a potentially more dangerous version of Twenty Questions?"
"Well, I dunno if truth or dare was what Cyrus had in mind. But I'm game." Then she laughed. "I haven't played that since high school."
Maybe she should just stop trying so hard. It might be that parties did just run themselves, and by continuing to just talk to each other, they could accomplish both getting to know each other, and enjoying the evening.
"Okay, even though I'm thinking Cyrus didn't mean me, when he made his suggestion, for those of you who don't know much about me, I'll go first."
Hoping someone else would jump in once she got the ball rolling.
"I grew up in Seattle, Washington, and lived there until I moved to North Carolina to go to college. I met Ted there, where I remained until I moved to Nachton. I teach, love scampi, butterscotch, storms, and long walks."
Hearing her words she all of a sudden felt like she was interviewing for a dating service. Embarrassed, she laughed and covered her face in her hands...
"Next?"
Always afraid of boring other people, Fallon always tried to keep her responses to a minimum.
With a deep head bow to Fallon he gave as much information as possible as he followed Fallon's lead.
"I was born and raised in SouthEast Asia, I am independantly wealthy due to family money, though I do own several antiquity businesses. I prefer spears to swords, have travelled the world quite a bit and some days I feel a thousand years old."
There, he had laid it all on the line for the fellow vampires in the room to know. He just wondered who else everyone was to have a better grasp of the situation. Perhaps someone would reveal a clan somehow.
"Let's see. I'm an archaeologist, I was born in Egypt and moved to the US in my teens. I spent a year in Egypt just a little while ago, doing some research, and shortly after I returned I decided to come here to look for work."
She may as well throw her own little tidbit out at Cyrus, since he'd given a hint to everyone else 'in the know.' "I'm currently staying at Liefde, and I'm very much hoping to find a job at Meridian... if my resume is bright and shiny enough."
Snickering to herself, she amended, "I can be kind of clutzy sometimes, since I'm almost blind as a bat without my glasses."
"Remind me not to be independently wealthy; sounds like it takes a lot out of you. I never feel more than 150 or so."Â?
If Cyrus was a vampire, what clan and were the others vampires too? Certainly not everyone or Cyrus could have been more straight forward.
"Sorry to hear about your father."Â?
It was never good to lose someone, no mater the circumstances.
Hell now he had to come up with something interesting.
"Me? Let's see, I'm a musician just moved out here from the west coast because I kept getting drug out here any way. I used to be a bar tender but I haven't done that in years."Â?
I'm not too good at these...as you know, I'm Alec. I am from New Orleans...and I went to Tulane to get my degree in Architecture. I am a security consultant attached to Duibne here in Nachton. I live here with my lover Ginnie. I am a pinball wizard and can beat Aishe at air hockey, though I would probably be a public danger when playing Dance Dance Revolution I am looking into buying and restoring properties around Nachton at present as a hobby outside of work. Um...I stare sometimes, but I don't mean anything by it.
Blushing slightly, he looked to the next person down the line.
And then Aishe had to go and joke, forcing Fallon to giggle behind her closed lips, causing her to create a most unladylike noise. Trying to cough, to cover her laugh, she was lucky to regain her composure in short order.
Liefde...Fallon knew Aishe was of the Evenhet clan, but was that connected to Liefde? Fallon couldn't remember...Meridian she was pretty sure was a well known Evenhet business...'the' Evenhet business. Would Cyrus pick up on that, she wondered. Had he asked her, Fallon could have told him anything she happened to have learned about the people in the room. It really wasn't much though, and she had no reason to think he would have been interested.
Ana, and her funny way of wording things. Funny, that was, until she mentioned her father dying, and Fallon felt the need to hug her. Unfortunately, Fallon would have needed to crawl over a couple people to reach Ana for that hug, and resisted. Besides, it might have just made Ana feel even worse...being the object of attention like that. It did cement Fallon's intention to talk to the girl more in a 'one on one' setting though. Fallon felt somewhat akin to Ana in her pain, and wanted to offer her whatever support she could.
Ambrose...her opinion hadn't changed from that first night at Flannigans. Fallon just liked him. He was a wild card though, and unless his joke about being 150 years old wasn't a joke anymore than Cyrus' comment, she didn't know where he fit into Nachton's population. But he just seemed so affable, and she knew she wanted to get to know him even better.
And lastly...Alec. Fallon had been watching him from the corner of her eye, and he seemed to be deep in thought. Aishe had told her he was one of 'them', and involved with a woman, but that had pretty much been it. He worked for Duibne, so Fallon knew he wasn't Evenhet, even though she wasn't sure what Duibne was or if it was affiliated with any clan in particular. It probably wasn't required that a vampire work for their clan, but that was another question for Cyrus. He had a good sense of humor, and Fallon found herself smiling as she listened to him. His admission of staring caught Fallon a bit off guard, and she wondered why he did it, if he didn't intend to...unless it was a physical thing that he couldn't help. As much as she was curious, she couldn't ask.
"I watched Tristan and a woman at the arcade once...they were dancing on that Revolution thing...it looked like fun."
It was just an observation, and she said it without really thinking.
"Well, that was interesting...now what?"
Fallon looked at the others, wide eyed, and curious as hell.
"There was an eight-year-old girl..." Giggling to herself, she tried to tell her joke, but snorted quietly, then took a deep breath, and tried again.
"There was an eight year girl trying to check out a book entitled 'Advice for Young Mothers' from the library. The librarian says to her, 'Now why do you want to check out this particular book, dear?' and the girl replies, 'Well, ma'am, I collect moths.'" Ana snickered and covered her mouth, trying to behave herself.
She knew her fair share of archaeology jokes, but she wasn't sure they'd be understood by the present company, as generally only archaeologists tended to laugh about archaeology jokes.
"I wouldn't wish archaeological humor on my worst enemy," she laughed softly. "It's torture."
Aishe grinned then. "I suppose it couldn't hurt any though," she quipped, "since my career is already in ruins."
Then, satisfied with her pun, she gave Ana a little smirk.
Aishe's little quip about 'ruins' was cute as well, though Fallon was a little shocked to see it had such an effect on Ana.
"Oh dear, I guess I better make sure she's okay."
And with that, Fallon hopped up and headed to the bathroom.
"Ana? Are you going to be all right?"
Fallon could see she was getting air, so the Heimlich wouldn't be necessary. Instead Fallon just rubbed Ana's back, trying to help her calm down.
Her voice was very raspy, echoing into the sink when she replied, "Yup, great, her joke caught me a bit by surprise and I figured it'd be less rude if I ran to the bathroom instead of snottering my drink all over your carpet." She turned her head slightly, eyes unfocused. "Sorry, didn't mean to make you worry."
She straightened, and brushed her chest haphazardly. "I didn't get anything on me, did I?"
"Here...let me..."
Fallon got a wash cloth from the small stack folded on the counter, and wet it with warm water. Wringing it out well, she brushed it across Ana's face in just a couple spots, and then lightly brushed it over her shirt. There was little damage, but Fallon knew it was better to take care of something like this quickly, than risk losing the shirt to a stain.
Once she thought everything was fine, Fallon handed the wash cloth back to Ana, in case maybe she'd missed something.
A little distracted, Fallon leaned back against the counter, and stared into space. There was something...something was bugging her...poking at her...like she was supposed to be doing something, but couldn't' for the life of her remember what it was.
"Oh...I guess I should leave...I'm sorry...I guess I just kind of spaced out there. Must be the excitement of the party, and all. And please, don't worry about making me worry...my middle name is worry...Fallon Worry Tierney."
Fallon winked at Ana, and laughed. She was just teasing, but she hoped her friend knew she was there for her, should she need an ear. Fallon still hesitated asking about Rorri though, knowing she really needed to get back to the others.
"If you don't need to dash off later, could I ask a favor? Do you think you might be able to stick around, and keep me company while I clean up? That way too, I can send you home with some left overs if you want them...otherwise, I'm afraid they'll go to waste."
Maybe then Fallon could ask...
"And then I can drive you home too...?"
